UNC basketball set to host key recruiting target in August
With the Summer months here, the focus for the North Carolina Tar Heels and Hubert Davis centers on recruiting for future classes. On Thursday, they locked in a visit from an important recruit that they are targeting in the 2026 class.
Four-star point guard Deron Rippey Jr. has locked in a few visits, including to Chapel Hill, he announced. He will visit North Carolina beginning on August 31st through the weekend while visiting Alabama from September 12-14th, and then Texas from September 19-21st.
He will take more visits as the months go on as well.
From a North Carolina angle on this, that weekend will be a big one. Not only will Rippey Jr. take an important visit, but the Tar Heels will also kick off the Bill Belichick era with the football program hosting TCU in primetime on September 1st. It's a HUGE opportunity for the Tar Heels to impress Rippey.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Rippey hails out of Blairstown, New Jersey and plays at Blair Academy. He's ranked No. 17 nationally, the No. 2 point guard and No. 1 player in the state of New Jersey per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.
He holds 44 offers in his recruitment including from Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana and more. The Tar Heels have offered 10 players in the 2026 class so far, including two point guards.

Here we go! Five-star LB Tyler Atkinson commits to Texas
The Longhorns have just gotten one of the best players in the nation. After being projected to land him on Monday night, five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson has committed to Texas over Georgia, Clemson, and Oregon. Atkinson is the No. 9 player in the nation and the No. 1 linebacker according to Rivals industry rankings. The Grayson High School star is the No. 1 prospect in the state of Georgia as well. Texas has now moved up to the No. 8 recruiting class in the country. Also, Atkinson is now the second highest-ranked commitment for the Longhorns, just a few spots behind five-star quarterback Dia Bell, who is now the No. 1 QB in the nation. It's been a very productive haul for Texas on the defensive side of the ball for the 2026 cycle. Some of the other notable additions are four-star cornerback Samari Matthews, five-star edge Richard Wesley, four-star defensive lineman Vodney Cleveland, four-star defensive lineman Dylan Berymon, and even ATH Jermaine Bishop is expected to play some cornerback. And this all comes after several heartbreaking recruiting losses over the past couple of weeks. Texas had the No. 1 class in 2025. They're now in a position to secure another elite one this time around. Where Florida ranks in USA TODAY Sports' SEC college football power rankings
The 2025 SEC media days are currently underway in Atlanta, where representatives from all 16 member schools have gathered for the annual extravaganza. The event also marks the midpoint of the summer season, leaving just a month and a half before the college football season kicks off. While the media days schedule continues to unfurl, USA TODAY Sports reporter Paul Myerberg took a moment to rank the Southeastern Conference from top to bottom for the upcoming campaign. In his list, he placed the Florida Gators among the top teams in the league at No. 5 overall — just behind the LSU Tigers and ahead of the Oklahoma Sooners. "Bringing back Billy Napier may end up working out for the Gators," Myerberg begins. "The decision not to make a move after a slow start in 2024 sparked a strong finish and developed some significant momentum heading into a promising season. No one embodies that promise more than sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway, who will have his development lifted by an upgraded receiver room." Here's how he projects the 16 SEC schools from top to bottom, from the Texas Longhorns to the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Broncos' projected starting defense before training camp
Denver Broncos rookies are set to report for training camp on Wednesday, followed by the arrival of veterans on July 22 and the start of camp on July 25. With training camp now less than two weeks away, it's a good time to review the state of the roster. We'll get to the projected starting offense next week, but this week, the focus is on Vance Joseph's side of the ball. Denver's defense made three big additions this offseason by signing linebacker Dre Greenlaw and safety Talanoa Hufanga during free agency before later using a first-round draft pick to select cornerback Jahdae Barron. Following those additions, here's our quick projection of the starting defense going into training camp. Note that this is just a projection, not an official depth chart from the team. The Broncos won't won't be required to release a depth chart until preseason begins in August. Broncos starting defense (and backups) You'll notice that the projected "starting" lineup includes 12 players because the Broncos will spend plenty of time in a nickel package, so a third cornerback is included above. It remains to be seen if Barron will end up playing primarily in the slot or as an outside cornerback (it's also possible he could get equal playing time at both spots). Denver's defense ranked third in points allowed per game (18.3), seventh in takeaways (25) and first in sacks (63) last season. After making several key additions this spring, the Broncos figure to have an even better unit in 2025. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X!
