Supreme Court stand deals LDF govt and Arlekar a severe blow

Time of India4 days ago
T'puram: The
Supreme Court
's warning against turning important university affairs into a power struggle between the govt and the governor is a severe blow to their pride. The apex court's call for better cooperation between the governor and the govt sends a clear message: both have ignored the needs of university students, who are the primary stakeholders in education.
The SC clarified that the chancellor can issue notifications to keep the current interim vice-chancellors (VCs) at Kerala Technological University (KTU) and Kerala University of Digital Sciences (DUK) or appoint new temporary ones. Following this, governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is expected to reappoint Ciza Thomas and K Sivaprasad. The panel submitted by the state govt for the appointment of interim VCs at KTU and DUK has thus lost its relevance.
Meanwhile, the standoff between interim VC Mohanan Kunnummal and pro-CPM syndicate members at Kerala University continued on Wednesday. While state govt engaged a set of pro-CPM members in the syndicate and SFI activists to confront the VC, Kunnummal is engaged in a tug of war with registrar K S Anil Kumar, a CPM nominee. Despite the administrative crisis at the university, Arlekar has failed to intervene and set things right.
Sources close to the development claim that the chancellor decided not to intervene in KU crisis unless the govt once again draggs the issue of the registrar's 'suspension' to the high court. Since the university statutes could work in favour of the vice-chancellor, there is no need to reach an agreement with the govt regarding the dispute over the disciplinary action taken against the registrar. Kumar had cancelled a private programme attended by the chancellor at the university senate hall over 'displaying a religious symbol' on stage.
The VC and Raj Bhavan are not ready for a negotiation unless Kumar accepts his suspension. Since attempts to pacify the chancellor and VC failed, SFI has restarted its protest at the university gates.
Meanwhile, the VC summoned officers from the administrative section and ensured that the registrar-in-charge, Mini Kappen was given e-file access. Following his directive, Kumar's file access was withheld. Officials had earlier refused to obey his instructions in this regard.

Julian Assange Joins Massive Pro-Palestine Protest On Sydney Harbour Bridge

Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters, including WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, marched across the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Sunday, closing the world-famous landmark. Assange, who returned to Australia last year after his release from a high-security British prison, was pictured surrounded by family and marching alongside former Australian foreign minister and New South Wales premier Bob Carr. France, Britain and Canada have in recent weeks voiced, in some cases qualified, intentions to diplomatically recognise a Palestinian state, as international concern and criticism have grown over malnutrition in Gaza. Australia has called for an end to the war in Gaza but has so far stopped short of a decision to recognise a Palestinian state. But in a joint statement with more than a dozen other nations on Tuesday it expressed the "willingness or the positive consideration... to recognise the state of Palestine as an essential step towards the two-State solution". The pro-Palestinian crowd braved heavy winds and rain to march across the bridge, chanting "ceasefire now" and "free Palestine". New South Wales police said it had deployed hundreds of extra staff across Sydney for the march. Mehreen Faruqi, the New South Wales senator for the left-wing Greens party, told the crowd gathered at central Sydney's Lang Park that the march would "make history". She called for the "harshest sanctions on Israel", accusing its forces of "massacring" Gazans, and criticised New South Wales Premier Chris Minns for saying the protest should not go ahead. Dozens of marchers held up banners listing the names of thousands of Palestinian children killed since the Gaza war broke out after an October 2023 attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Labour backbench MP Ed Husic attended the march and called for his ruling party, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, to recognise a Palestinian state. Assange did not address the crowd or talk to the media. Israel is under mounting international pressure to end the bloodshed that has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry. Hamas's 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to a tally based on official figures. Of the 251 hostages taken during the attack, 49 are still being held in Gaza, including 27, the Israeli military says, are dead. The Harbour Bridge is over a kilometre long and was opened in 1932. Since then, its twin parabolic arcs have become world famous, a symbol of both Sydney and of Australia.

Non-teaching staff of Madras University call off protest

Chennai: Non-teaching staff of Madras University will convene a meeting on Monday to discuss their future course of action regarding the proposal to cut their salaries. This decision follows the employee associations calling off their protest late on Saturday, the day the syndicate meeting, where the pay cut agenda was scheduled to be discussed, was postponed. "Since the syndicate meeting has been moved to next week, we have decided to call off our strike. The Monday meeting will primarily involve discussions between employee associations to ensure that this pay cut agenda is not brought up in the syndicate meeting ever again," said Balakrishnan, president of the Madras University staff association. According to the employees, who were on a sit-in protest outside the PRO office on the Madras University Campus, the proposed pay cut would reduce the salaries of employees such as attenders, senior attenders, section officers, assistant and deputy registrars by 10,000 to 30,000 on average. Their current salary ranges from 40,000 to 1,30,000 a month. But on the recommendations of Dr Venugopal and Dr Arumugam committees, our salary structure was revised and fixed on a par with those in the Secretariat," Balakrishnan pointed out. A retired assistant registrar of the varsity lamented, "The govt cannot cite fund shortage to cut down the pay of university workers while maintaining the status quo for those at the Secretariat. Moreover, when the next pay revision is scheduled for 2026, why is the govt bent on moving this agenda in the syndicate all of a sudden? The employees, therefore, are well within their right to protest." Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !
