46 Tamu Desa to be built, upgraded this year in Sabah

The Sun16-07-2025
KOTA KINABALU: Forty-six tamu desa (rural markets) across Sabah will be built or undergo upgrading this year.
Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the projects will be carried out through 28 full and sub-district offices, with a total allocation of RM10 million under the tamu desa premises development programme by the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP).
'This year, we received an allocation of RM10 million under Budget 2025 to implement the development of tamu desa premises.
'During the closing ceremony of the MADANI Rakyat Programme in Tawau on May 11, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an additional RM10 million allocation to continue developing tamu desa premises in Sabah,' he said in a statement today.
Ewon said he would head to Sarawak next to discuss the implementation of tamu desa development in the state this year.
'The land status of the tamu desa sites must be verified by the district offices to avoid disputes, and 15 district offices have submitted written confirmation for sites with no issues,' he said, expressing hope that the projects would provide comfortable facilities for entrepreneurs and small traders.
Earlier, Ewon handed over letters of appointment to 15 district officers as chairpersons of the district-level Entrepreneur, Cooperative, Hawker and Small Trader Development Council (MPUKPPD), as well as letters of authorisation for the tamu desa development projects in the 15 districts in the state.

Malaysia set to emerge as Asean AI hub with Nvidia-YTL partnership

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is poised to emerge as a regional hub and centre of excellence for artificial intelligence (AI) in Southeast Asia, following the signing of a landmark partnership between Nvidia Corp and YTL Power International Bhd. YTL Corp Bhd executive chairman Tan Sri Francis Yeoh described the partnership as a "blessing". "We are indeed blessed to be a partner of visionary Jensen Huang's Nvidia and also to continue to play a role as a leaven to boost the productive use of AI in the Asean region," Yeoh told Business Times. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the agreement marks a significant step in accelerating Malaysia's AI capabilities. The initiative, backed by a substantial investment of RM10 billion, underscores Malaysia's ambition to position itself at the forefront of AI innovation. "This landmark project includes the development of AI data centres, deployment of Nvidia's high-performance graphics processing units and, most importantly, the creation of Malaysia's own sovereign large language model (LLM)," Tengku Zafrul shared on X. The sovereign LLM is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing Malaysia's digital autonomy by enabling the creation of AI solutions tailored to local languages, cultures and industries — supporting national security and propelling digital economic growth. YTL Power, a unit of YTL Corp, will lead the physical development of the AI infrastructure. The company is also tasked with building a robust AI ecosystem by engaging global technology firms, local suppliers and local contractors, ensuring strong domestic participation. Tengku Zafrul added that the partnership is a direct result of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's international engagement efforts, which have opened the door to high-impact investments with the potential to reshape Malaysia's economic and technological future.

Ewon urges students to embrace entrepreneurship for future success

KUALA LUMPUR: The Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP), Datuk Ewon Benedick, has called on university students to take charge of their futures by embracing entrepreneurship instead of waiting for traditional job opportunities. Speaking at the launch of the Bank Rakyat UNIpreneur and RAKYATpreneur programmes at the Bank Rakyat Twin Towers, Ewon stressed the need for self-reliant entrepreneurs who can navigate economic challenges. 'By legally registering their businesses, students can access government-backed training, financing, and mentorship from agencies like TEKUN, MARA, and Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia. Our goal is to create entrepreneurs, not just job seekers,' he said. Since 2020, the RAKYATpreneur and UNIpreneur initiatives have supported 2,633 individuals with RM13.04 million in funding as of December 2024. Ewon noted that these numbers reflect real success stories—lives transformed, dreams realised, and potential unlocked. He also highlighted the role of digital skills in expanding market reach and improving efficiency, particularly for rural entrepreneurs. 'Digitalisation is crucial for an inclusive and sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem, aligning with Malaysia's digital economy and MADANI Economy goals,' he added. Bank Rakyat chairman Datuk Mohd Irwan Mohd Mubarak shared that 63 per cent of RAKYATpreneur participants increased sales within six months, while 80 per cent began saving consistently, and 76 per cent created jobs in their communities. For UNIpreneur, 65.6 per cent of participants saw sales growth, with all adopting regular savings habits. The 2024 programmes now include the RAKYAT Accelerator, offering additional funding for promising alumni. By 2025, the focus will shift to product development, packaging, and fintech integration. 'Entrepreneurs will gain access to digital tools like eBiz Tools Marketplace, eCA-i accounts, i-BizRAKYAT, and free fintech solutions for three to six months, monitored by strategic partners,' Mohd Irwan said. This year, RM3.82 million has been allocated to support 800 participants from August 2025 to January 2026. – Bernama
