Alannah Myles was propelled to fame in the early 1990s with her iconic hit Black Velvet, but 36 years after releasing her self-titled debut album, the singer has been through a hidden struggle
Rewinding over 30 years, soft rock enthusiasts couldn't get enough of the Canadian songstress Alannah Myles and her legendary anthem 'Black Velvet'.
The single catapulted Myles to international fame, topping charts in the United States and earning her the prestigious Grammy Award. However, 36 years on from her eponymous debut album, Alannah has endured unseen battles away from the spotlight.

Her ascent to fame largely came on the back of 'Black Velvet', an ode to Elvis Presley, its lyrics a poignant representation of his life and charm. It's said that the inspiration for 'Black Velvet' struck Alannah after she visited Memphis for the 10th anniversary of the King of Rock n Roll's passing.

Reflecting in 2021, the artist remarked: "It is a country blues song with a chorus, ushering in a time when country music won the hearts of the masses away from disco, punk, and grunge music. If it was a crappy song no one would remember it."
The track hasn't just garnered a staggering 358 million streams on Spotify; it also impressed the critics, bagging the award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance at the 1991 Grammys in addition to multiple Juno Awards on her home turf, reports the Mirror US.
Facing immense anticipation for her follow-up release, Alannah presented her second album 'Rockinghorse', which featured renowned tracks such as 'Our World Our Times' and 'Song Instead of a Kiss'.
She would indeed receive another Grammy nomination, but her subsequent album didn't quite reach the success of her initial release.
Following two more albums in the 90s, 'Alannah' and 'A Rival', she took a hiatus from music. In subsequent years, Myles encountered significant health hurdles that drastically affected her life.

In 2017, the singer sustained a severe leg injury that was far from a minor inconvenience, severely limiting her mobility and confining her largely to her home for an extended period.
Allanah was also diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, an auto-immune condition affecting spinal joints. This ailment can lead to intense stiffness and pain in her back during routine activities and even cause discomfort as she sits.
In a conversation with City News, she disclosed: "Now I have issues with being able to sit. That's why when you see me in concert, you see me on a chair. I'm sitting upright. It's painful for me to sit down, so I can't really go anywhere.
"I can't sit in a wheelchair. I can't go to a concert, parties, or even medical visits without a padded stretcher. I have no life now as a result of not being able to get myself up independently which makes it only worse... I can get up to walk, but I need help doing it."
Despite the disease affecting her physical health, Alannah remained resilient and continued to produce new music. In 2018, she reunited her former band and re-recorded some of her iconic hits, independently releasing them separate from her previous label.

'The house is a proper bachelor pad and perfect for parties and entertaining. 'Orlando is surrounded by other famous people, too. Kourtney Kardashian and her husband Travis Barker live just down the road, as well as Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis. Kevin Costner lives on the same street, too. 'It's right on the beach and Orlando has been seen there loads in the past few weeks. He seems to be settling right in and has already made friends with his direct neighbours.' READ MORE ON ORLANDO BLOOM PARENTING DEBATE Orlando Bloom blasted as an 'idiot' for 'inappropriate' snap of Daisy, 4 Orlando and Katy announced their split last month after nine years together, with insiders revealing the Roar singer told friends it was over in January. But unlike most celebrity break-ups, which nearly always end up being very messy and very public, Katy and Orlando have been working hard to buck that trend. Since their split, they've even been seen on holiday together, with those close to them telling me they were keen to keep a strong family unit for their daughter Daisy Dove. And it's not just behind the scenes that the pair are making sure their new way of life is all sweetness and light. Orlando appeared to be the first person to have a chuckle when an AI photograph of him having dinner with former German politician Angela Merkel went viral earlier this month. Someone created the snap to poke fun at the pictures of Katy and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau having a cosy dinner in Montreal last month. Heartbroken Katy Perry told pals in January that Orlando Bloom relationship was OVER - as star removes engagement ring Two days after the pictures of Katy and Justin went online — he was spotted at her concert in Montreal with his daughter. And it was later claimed the pair had been 'texting non-stop' back in July but those close to Katy have said this had cooled off now. An insider added: 'They're both busy people — who knows what could happen in the future?' 6 Orlando and Katy announced their split last month after nine years together Credit: Splash The post about Orlando and Angela was reshared endlessly, with a caption that read: 'Just weeks after announcing his split with fiancee Katy Perry, English actor Orlando Bloom was photographed Friday dining with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel. 'Angela kept Orlando laughing all night — he couldn't keep his eyes off her.' Orlando posted three clapping hand emojis underneath the post, with a pal adding: 'He found it hilarious.' JUSTIN DUPE DYLAN EXPOSED BY UNBELIEBABLE DANCING A JUSTIN BIEBER lookalike duped a Las Vegas nightspot into believing he was the real deal. The imposter, Frenchman Dylan Desclos, got up on stage at the XS Nightclub in Sin City and performed for revellers who also fell for the prankster. Dylan has now been banned from any hotel or club owned by Wynn Resorts. A company spokesman said: 'As soon as the error was recognised, he was removed from the resort and denied future entry.' After checking out Dylan's social media, it's easy to see why people thought he was the famous US singer – he looks pretty much identical. Justin's model wife Hailey has even previously said how similar they look. The only thing I clocked when I checked out the videos of that night though is that Justin can dance . . . and Dylan definitely can't. So, we are going to keep doing it.' The band are in the third year of their Music Of Spheres world tour. To date they have sold 12 million tickets – making it the highest attended rock concert in music history. Coldplay will wrap up their epic run with a ten-night residency at London's Wembley Stadium. I first revealed Chris and co were booking in for the shows last June, with the band confirming my story just weeks later. If you've got a ticket you are in for a massive treat. Organisers of London 's All Points East festival and Bristol's Forwards festival have announced just days before the event that the star will no longer be performing. The 27-year-old, whose real name is Jaylah Hickmon, will also no longer perform at France's Rock En Seine festival in Paris, with no reason given for the rapper's absence at the events. An All Points East statement read: 'Unfortunately Doechii will no longer be able to perform at All Points East on Saturday, August 23. 'We'd like to apologise to any disappointed fans and hope to welcome Doechii back to All Points East in the future.' The Florida-born artist was due to perform at All Points East on Saturday, followed by Forwards on Sunday, while her Rock En Seine performance was due to take place on Thursday. 'All Points East has an amazing line-up including Raye, Tyla, Jade, Jyoty, Nao and many more, and it's set to be a truly unforgettable day.' A replacement for the star has not been announced by either of the UK festivals at the time of writing. A statement from Forwards read: 'We are very sad to announce that Doechii will not be performing at her upcoming shows. 'She is an incredible artist and we were as excited as you were to bring her to our hometown of Bristol. 'We are so proud of this year's Sunday line-up, with three amazing female headliners in Jorja Smith, The Last Dinner Party and Olivia Dean gracing our stage, as well as a plethora of other amazing musical talent across the day.' Ticketholders have not been told whether they will be able to get a refund for the events following the cancellation. The rapper first became known for her track Yucky Blucky Fruitcake, when it went viral following its release in 2020. Doechii achieved worldwide fame in 2024 with the release of mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal, which includes the songs Denial Is A River, Catfish and Nissan Altima. Months later, the record gave the rapper her first Grammy Award for best rap album, with nominations for best rap performance and best new albums at the 67th award ceremony. She is also behind the viral hit Anxiety, which was released after a YouTube video of Doechii singing the song, which samples the 2011 hit Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye and Kimbra, resurfaced.

MUSIC Ryan Wang ★★★★★ Queen's Hall As part of the EIF's Focus on Poland, Monday's Queen's Hall recital not only placed its focus on one of the most familiar Polish composers - Chopin - but also put the spotlight on a most remarkable young pianist. At the age of 18, Canadian-born Ryan Wang already has a list of prized titles to his name, not least of which is BBC Young Musician of the Year 2024. Ryan Wang | Betsan Haf Evans Playing his all-Chopin programme completely from memory, a sense of inherent joy inhabits his performing, becoming all the more joyous for the audience experiencing this phenomenally prodigious talent. The 24 Preludes of the first half immediately revealed Wang's gift for blossoming lyricism, with flawless technical precision bringing sighing phrasing, gentle rippling or twinkling like stars as called for by the shifting moods of the music. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Piano Sonata No 2 was meatier and more impassioned, driving forward with pulsating rhythm, leading to an appropriately sombre Marche funèbre and, in turn, the quicksilver nimbleness of the Finale – Presto. To close, Chopin's Là ci darem le mano Variations were playful and humorous in their fluency and flourish. Definitely a rising star to keep an eye on. Carol Main MUSIC Shostakovich Inside Out ★★★★★ Usher Hall Getting it right when dissecting orchestral music and bringing it up close to the audience can be hit and miss. Aurora Orchestra, making its first visit to Scotland in the 20 years of its existence, got it very much right at the Usher Hall on Monday afternoon. Their trademark is playing everything from memory, something not usually seen with large-scale scores like Shostakovich's 5th Symphony. Finding their places amongst the stalls audience lounging on beanbags, the string players interspersed themselves across the gaps in-between, sensibly keeping the brass section at a little bit more distance. With conductor Nicholas Collon like a swivelling circus ringmaster in the middle of his 360⁰ orchestra, the performers became a symphonic juke-box, playing excerpts of anything he called for. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Shostakovich's opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, his 4th Symphony and even a bit of Mahler all helped to demonstrate what the 5th Symphony is all about. Non patronising, and putting the critical political dimension in perspective, greater understanding of the work's background made for more rewarding listening as each of the four movements was played, broken up by Collon's informative chat. Acoustically, the sound itself was fulsome and surprisingly coherent given how far apart the players were from each other. Carol Main
