Oklahoma Sooners heavy favorites over Illinois State to open 2025 season
It's the Monday of the first week of the college football season. Congratulations, everyone, we've made it. Week zero will open the 2025 season with a fantastic matchup across the pond in Dublin, Ireland, between the Kansas State Wildcats and the Iowa State Cyclones in Farmageddon. Though the Oklahoma Sooners still have 12 days before they take the field, FanDuel has released the opening line for OU's week one matchup vs. the Illinois State Redbirds. As one would imagine, the Oklahoma Sooners are the heavy favorite over FCS Illinois State with the line currently set at minus-35.5. Though Illinois State is one of the top 10 teams in the FCS heading into the season, this is a heavy mismatch, and the Sooners will be looking to prove a point right out of the gate. Oklahoma's two high-profile transfer portal additions, John Mateer and Jaydn Ott, will take the field for the first time in an Oklahoma Sooners uniform. It'll be the first time we get to see Ben Arbuckle's offense on display on Owen Field, and one can imagine there will be some fireworks. Defensively, the Sooners are expected to be one of the best in the nation in 2025. Led by their defensive front, Oklahoma isn't likely to give up a lot of points in this game against an overmatched Illinois State team. Here's a look at the early odds for Oklahoma's season opener. CBS Sports projects which bowl game Notre Dame will play in later this year
As the season gets closer and closer to kickoff, we are starting to see where many believe that Notre Dame will end up playing the postseason. CBS Sports announced its 2025 college football bowl projections on Thursday, and they have the Irish returning to the College Football Playoff to face, wait for it, the LSU Tigers. This would be a matchup of the ages, as it would pit the former Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly, against the program that he believed didn't have what it takes to compete for a title. Well, his idea was proved wrong last year, as the Irish made it all the way to the CFP championship game, while his Tigers weren't even good enough to make the field. Brad Crawford, who compiled the list, has Notre Dame as the No. 5 seed and LSU as the last team to make the field. Not only would the Irish get a chance to knock off Kelly and the Tigers, but they'd have to come to South Bend to do it. If Notre Dame were to advance to the second-round, they'd be in line to take on No. 4 Ohio State, a team that the Irish sorely want to see again and defeat. They've faced the Buckeyes each of the last three seasons, only to fall each time. Crawford's other top three teams are Texas, Penn State and Clemson, as he sees each of the earning the coveted first-round bye. It didn't work out well for any of those teams in the first year of the 12-team CFP field, as every one of them lost their initial game. As for the rest of the field, he's got No. 9 Miami visiting No. 8 Texas Tech, No. 6 Alabama hosting No. 11 Boise State, and No. 7 Georgia taking on No. 10 Oregon in Athens. Back to the Irish, Crawford has them going 11-1 on the year, with the loss coming to either Texas A&M or the Hurricanes. It's pretty safe to say many in Irish Nation would take that result, with a return trip to the CFP following what would be a very successful regular season. No decision made on Notre Dame's starting quarterback as regular season nears
The starting quarterback for Notre Dame in the season opener at Miami two weeks from tonight will be... Well, we still don't know. The Fighting Irish held a news conference Sunday following a scrimmage, and the expectation was that QB1 would be acknowledged. But that didn't happen. So we continue to wait and see if CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey will be taking the field with the other 10 starters on offense in the opener against the Hurricanes. "We have to make a decision before we play, but the moment hasn't happened where a guy is clearly the starter," head coach Marcus Freeman said, adding that both players have elevated their play during the competition. One thing we do know: the offense will be slightly different depending upon who wins the job. "I think it's going to be important whoever wins the job, we play to the strengths of who they are and not put them in compromising situations," offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Mike Denbrock said.
