LDP Women's chief Glenna Wong ( pic ) said such a move risks undermining public trust and could affect essential aid programmes that rely on donations and fundraisers to support vulnerable communities.
Advertisement She emphasised that temporary surpluses are often due to scheduling or administrative delays, and warned that taxing these funds could disrupt their intended use. Wong added that smaller grassroots charities - particularly in Sabah and Sarawak - may struggle to cope with complex tax compliance, potentially forcing them to close. The party called on State Governments to step in and protect local non-profits, while urging the federal government to prioritise support over taxation to uphold the spirit of public service. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ‘Expand RM100 handout coverage' call

Published on: Wednesday, July 30, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 By: Sohan Das Text Size: Pic for illustration only. LABUAN: The RM100 handout by the Madani Government to every Malaysian adult should not be restricted to the purchase of essential provisions from approved stores but include eateries. Former Labuan Indian Muslim Association President Mohd Tajudeen Mohamed said it is certainly a generous gesture by the Government and would help ease the burden of many hit by the spiralling cost of living. 'What is important is that every adult benefits, irrespective of background or financial status, meaning without discrimination and in an easy way of just scanning the MyKad.' Tajudeen, who is also vice president of the Labuan Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said what had been overlooked was that there were tens of thousands of singles either working or studying outstation and living in rented rooms without a kitchen or without cooking skill except for cooking Maggie mee. He said to this category of RM100 recipients, the provisions would meaning nothing. 'They would rather prefer cooked meals of their choice and this can be available if the use of the voucher was expanded for use at selected Muslim, Chinese, Indian or any other restaurant.' He said with RM100 they could have several good meals, including meals that they miss, for up to a month. Tajudeen also said the same theory applied to those in old folks homes. 'What could they do with uncooked provisions? They would surely be happier if, instead, they could use the money to order their favourite meal from outside. 'An added advantage of expanded use of the RM100 would there will be more than one winner - both stores and restaurants. The Government gesture would score more marks from the public.' The handout under Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (sara) will be valid from Aug 31 to December, and 22 million people were entitled with 4,100 approved stores. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Lodge report if harassed via the use of AI: Police

Published on: Wednesday, July 30, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Jasmin said the existing laws, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, may be used to take action, particularly in cases involving criminal threats. - Pic for illustration only. TAWAU: The public is urged to lodge a police report if they are harassed, threatened or humiliated through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) on social media. The call comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of AI-generated images or videos to bully, intimidate or defame individuals online. Authorities are also concerned that political supporters may resort to AI manipulation on social media as the 17th State Election (PRN) approaches. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said police are aware of these emerging threats and are closely monitoring any misuse of technology that could disrupt public order. 'We are aware that irresponsible parties now have various tools, including AI, which can be used to humiliate or provoke others. 'We advise victims to report such incidents to the police,' he said. He said the District Criminal Investigation Division and Commercial Crime Investigation Division are actively monitoring such activity. Jasmin said the existing laws, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, may be used to take action, particularly in cases involving criminal threats. He also advised social media users to be mindful of their conduct online, just as they would in public, to maintain peace and safety. On preparations for the coming state election, Jasmin said his team has already begun early planning, including personnel readiness and identifying key needs to ensure maximum security throughout the process. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 300 solar streetlights for Merotai villages

Published on: Wednesday, July 30, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 Text Size: The solar streetlight being assembled. TAWAU: Eighteen villages in Merotai benefited from the installation of 300 solar lights to enhance safety and the well-being of residents in the area. Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (Harapan Rakyat) President, Tan Sri Liew Yun Fah, said the installation indirectly helps ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians in areas lacking streetlight facilities. He said the implementation was carried out in stages since two years ago. 'Before this, the roads and alleys going into the villages were really dark at night, which could be dangerous for the people living there. 'Therefore, we took the initiative to install solar lights to brighten up the area and make it easier for villagers to carry out their activities at night,' he said. Liew said solar lights were cost-effective, do not require connection to the electricity supply, and can operate even during power outages. 'We will identify additional locations within the constituency that require solar lights and will consider subsequent installation phases based on needs and feedback from residents,' said Liew. The villages receiving the installation of these lights include Kuala Merotai; Kampung Iban Baharu and Lama; Sungai Udin; Kampung Langsat; Kampung Jagung; Kampung Kijang; Kampung Pengkalan Asli; Kampung Tanah Merah; Kampung Simpang Tiga; Kampung Mangaris; and Kampung Kelapa. Additionally, Kampung Melati Burut; Kampung Hulu Haji Matahir; Kampung Haji Matahir; Kampung Beruang; Kampung Sungai Imam; Kampung Seri Bombalai; and Kampung Sungai Imam Bombalai Laut are also included. 'This is an ongoing effort and a social responsibility towards the villagers in Merotai.' Liew expressed his gratitude to all parties involved, including members of Parti Harapan Rakyat, who carried out the installation through a spirit of cooperation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
