Star 49ers tight end George Kittle thrives in coach Kyle Shanahan's outside zone scheme as a blocker, and first-round draft pick Mykel Williams might have to learn that the hard way in practice this season.
Kittle detailed his early interactions with Williams during San Francisco's offseason so far, and it's clear things could get interesting between the two teammates during training camp later this month — all in good fun, of course.
'I get to run outside zone against Mykel Williams, and so that's going to be really fun because he was telling me how he thinks it's disrespectful for tight ends to block him,' Kittle told NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco at the American Century Championship on Thursday in South Lake Tahoe.
'And I was like, welcome to the NFL baby. You're going to see something different on these practices, I promise you that.'

Kittle's PFF run block grade of 84.5 is the best for NFL tight ends over the last seven seasons, and the All-Pro could put together a feature-length film of his viral pancake blocks over the years. Kittle even has admitted to laughing after tossing an opponent onto their back.
'Whether you're taking their soul, they just made a highlight reel clip, and you never want to be on a highlight reel clip,' Kittle told reporters in 2021. 'So I kind of laugh about the fact that they just made a highlight reel clip. So thanks.'
Kittle is an all-around talent as a blocker and pass-catcher, and Williams certainly will learn quickly that the 49ers do things differently when it comes to outside zone.

Paul Finebaum mocks Colorado coach Deion Sanders for college salary cap idea: ‘He's a politician'

During a Big 12 event this week, Colorado coach Deion Sanders claimed college football needs a salary cap. An idea popular analyst Paul Finebaum thinks is silly coming from 'Coach Prime' of all people. College sports, especially football, are now much different than what it was a decade ago. With the addition of name, image, and likeness (NIL) money, and a recent court ruling forcing schools to pay players directly, collegiate sports have been forever changed. Advertisement Related: Deion Sanders Snaps Over Reporter's Question About His Health, Refuses to Take Question Teenagers and athletes in football are making wild sums of money, and there are no real guardrails on how much money they make. However, Sanders believes that should change, and had an interesting opinion this week when asked about the situation. 'I wish there was a cap. Like, the top-of-the-line player makes this, and if you're not that type of guy, you know you're not going to make that. That's what the NFL does,' said Sanders. 'So the problem is, you got a guy that's not that darn good, but he could go to another school and they give him a half-a-million dollars. You can't compete with that. And it don't make sense.' Advertisement It's a fair point. However, coming from Sanders — who had two stars in his son Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter making huge NIL money in 2024 — the opinion rings hollow. Especially to popular college football analyst Paul Finebaum. 'No,' Finebaum said on a SportsCenter when asked if Sanders had a good point. 'I just find it amazing that Deion Sanders, who had a generational player of our lifetime on his team last year, really didn't go very far and is asking for a paradigm shift. 'I understand what he is saying. And in a perfect world, it would be great. But it's not. Deion is a politician. He sounds like he's running for the Senate.' Legendary coach warns Dodgers why they're risking Shohei Ohtani's future by letting him pitch

Are the Los Angeles Dodgers creating a ticking time bomb in Shohei Ohtani's shoulder by letting him resume pitching? A legendary pitching coach believes the team needs to end his time as a dual-threat player. Ohtani is one of the greatest talents to ever wear baseball cleats. Not just because he is an exceptional hitter, but because he is an All-Star-level pitcher. The Japanese superstar loves doing both, and the team has allowed him to work his way back to the mound to be a part of the pitching staff. However, legendary pitching coach Dr. Tom House believes he and the team are playing with fire by still thinking he has a future on the mound. Advertisement Related: MLB insider – Los Angeles Dodgers need to trade for Cy Young runner-up to address injury-plagued rotation 'No,' Dr. House said when asked by Pablo Torres recently if Ohtani should keep pitching. 'I think he's a hitter. He's proven all he needs to as a pitcher. I think his value to the ball club is on the field every day. I hope I am wrong [but] I don't think his shoulder can handle it… It's a combination of a bunch of stuff. 'Primarily, the thresholds with heavy weight training are good for hitting, but not for pitching. The everyday stresses of throwing downhill. When you throw on flat ground, the most energy you develop is four times body weight. It's four pounds of energy. When you go down a mound, you get about six times body weight. I don't think his shoulders can handle the deceleration.' Shohei Ohtani stats (Pitching – Career): 38-19 Record, 2.99 ERA, 1.079 WHIP, 614 strikeouts, 174 walks Credit: Peter Aiken-Imagn Images Dr. House admits he hasn't worked with Ohtani and is only seeing things from afar. He does believe his mechanics are sound and his mental makeup is strong. But he doesn't feel his body can hold up doing both. The doctor and former pitching coach's opinion should be taken seriously. Advertisement Dr. House is a legend in MLB circles and is known as the 'father of modern pitching mechanics' and a 'professor of throwing' due to his expertise in blending pitching with the science of arm mechanics. During his career, he worked with Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan and even NFL legends Drew Brees and Tom Brady. Ohtani has made four appearances as a reliever this season. There have been rumblings that his future could be as a closer. However, there have been many around the game who have previously suggested he should not pitch. And instead, play the outfield. His arm and athleticism could make him a gold-glove winner. It is something the team should seriously consider, especially if experts suggest there are huge dangers in his pitching. The Dodgers still have eight more seasons and over $500 million invested in the three-time MVP. Deion Sanders eyeing 2 NFL icons to join Colorado Buffaloes coaching staff

Deion Sanders brought in a new wave of talent this offseason to replace Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter after they entered the National Football League. Now, Sanders is eyeing two well-known NFL figures to join his Colorado Buffaloes coaching staff for 2025. Speaking at Big 12 media days, Sanders said he's 'praying' that Colorado is able to add former NFL quarterback and offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, along with former defensive coordinator and head coach Mike Zimmer, to his staff. With those two added, that's 204 years of NFL experience. And I want those years.' Deion Sanders on wanting to add Byron Leftwich, Mike Zimmer to Colorado Buffaloes coaching staff (via ProFootballTalk) As previously reported in March that Colorado had already hired Leftwich, Sanders confirmed that's not the case. So, per Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today, Sanders is urging athletic director Rick George to add Leftwich and Zimmer to the payroll. Pro Football Hall of Famers Marshall Faulk (running backs coach) and Warren Sapp (defensive pass rush coordinator) are on the staff. In addition, former NFL players Domata Peko (defensive line) and Andre Gurode (offensive line), along with former NFL coach Pat Shurmur (offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach), work with Sanders. Advertisement Zimmer, who spent last season as the Dallas Cowboys' defensive coordinator, has been weighing retirement after spending decades in the NFL as an assistant, defensive coordinator, and head coach. Leftwich, who played in the NFL from 2003 to 2012, served as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022. Related Headlines
