TAWAU: Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security cum PBRS President, Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, said Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) is a local political party that embraces multiracial and multi-religious values. He said PBRS even has the State map in its logo. Although it is a local party, it does not discriminate by race or religion – every Sabahan is eligible to become a member, he said.
Advertisement 'Though small, PBRS has held positions in the ruling coalition. The party is 30 years old, and out of those 30 years, it has been part of the government for 28 years – with the only exception being the 22 months after Barisan Nasional's loss of federal power.' 'PBRS has held various important government positions over the years, including deputy ministers, state ministers, federal ministers, and even the position of Speaker. I currently serves as a deputy minister, which I consider a mark of respect for the party,' he said. He said the State has some 16 political parties – the highest in Malaysia.
Advertisement While some may see this as a positive sign of democracy, he believes it signifies division. Out of all these parties, only four currently hold positions at the Federal level and PBRS is one of them. Meanwhile, he acknowledged PBRS Vice President cum Sri Tanjong Division Chief, Fung Hon Yi, for his contributions to the community. Arthur believes the Sri Tanjong constituency should have PBRS' presence and also include Chinese representation within the party. He emphasised that the establishment of the division service centre is not a mere symbolic gesture but a true reflection of the party's motto 'People First, Service-Oriented'. The division will now fully engage in community service work. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Russian general seriously wounded on front line, regional leader says
(Reuters) -General Esedulla Abachev, deputy commander of Russia's Northern group of forces, has been seriously wounded on the front line of the war with Ukraine, a senior official said on Monday. Abachev comes from Russia's Dagestan region, whose leader Sergei Melikov said on Telegram that he was in a serious but stable condition in "one of the best military medical centres in the country". Ukrainian military intelligence said on Sunday that Abachev had an arm and a leg amputated after being wounded in a Ukrainian strike on a Russian military column on a highway in the Kursk region of western Russia, and that he was being treated in Moscow. Reuters could not confirm those details. At least a dozen Russian generals have been killed in the war that started with Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Abachev graduated from the Higher Tank Command School in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv when Ukraine was still part of the Soviet Union, which collapsed in 1991. He received the Gold Star of the Hero of Russia for his role in combat missions during the current war. Dagestani leader Melikov said he was the pride of the region, describing him as "a combat general and a wise commander who always tries to protect his personnel, sometimes neglecting his own safety". UK grants asylum to Hong Kong democracy activist Tony Chung
LONDON: Hong Kong democracy activist Tony Chung, who once called for the city's independence and was the youngest person to be jailed under its national security law, has been granted asylum in the UK. Chung, 24, posted a letter from the UK interior ministry on his Instagram page on Sunday, which read: 'Your claim for asylum has been succesful and you have been granted refugee status.' UK authorities accepted that Chung has a 'well-founded fear of persecution and therefore cannot return to your country'. He has been granted a five-year residence permit and will be able to apply for permanent residence. 'The moment I received this notification, my feelings were truly indescribable,' Chung wrote on Instagram. 'My first reaction was sheer excitement... however, this sense of possibility has brought me fear -- fear of planning for the future,' he added. 'All I can say is that I won't give up, and I don't want to give up,' he vowed. Beijing imposed its national security law on Hong Kong in 2020 after months of huge and often violent pro-democracy protests in the former British colony. In 2021, Chung, then 20, became the youngest person to be jailed under the security law after he pleaded guilty to 'secession' and was sentenced to three and a half years in prison. He fled to Britain in 2023 and applied for political asylum upon entry, saying he had been closely watched by Hong Kong's national security police despite his jail term having ended early for good behaviour. Chung, who said he has suffered from depression since his detention, was previously the convenor of Student Localism, a small group he set up as a secondary school pupil to advocate for Hong Kong's independence from China. Separation from China was then a fringe view in Hong Kong although calls for self-rule became more vocal during the 2019 protests. In 2020, Chung was nabbed by plainclothes police from a coffee shop opposite the US consulate in Hong Kong, where he was allegedly planning to seek asylum. Chung revealed the news of his successful asylum bid the day after the former Hong Kong legislator Ted Hui said he had been granted asylum in Australia. Chung and Hui are among dozens of activists targeted with bounties by Hong Kong authorities. Political dissent in Hong Kong has been quashed since Beijing imposed the security law, with many opposition figures fleeing abroad and others sentenced to years in jail - AFP

TVET Commission to streamline vocational education in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: The government believes the new Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission will create a more structured and industry-aligned education system. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the commission will eliminate overlaps and improve resource efficiency across ministries and institutions. He referenced Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's 13th Malaysia Plan speech, which emphasised strengthening the National TVET Policy 2030. 'The TVET Commission will regulate institutions, monitor strategy implementation, and ensure inter-ministerial coordination,' he said during the Dewan Rakyat session. Responding to Lee Chuan How (PH-Ipoh Timor), Ahmad Zahid acknowledged the need for better outreach to Chinese youth regarding TVET opportunities. He commended Lee, a TVET graduate, for actively promoting vocational education among students. 'His efforts have successfully encouraged Chinese students to join TVET programmes,' Ahmad Zahid added. On Felda land inheritance issues, he noted that the government started reviewing the Land Act (Group Settlement Areas) 1960 in September 2022. Five key priorities were identified, including governance improvements and protecting land ownership rights. The Felda Regulatory Division is committed to resolving housing concerns for second and third-generation settlers. Ahmad Zahid will visit Felda Jengka on Sept 6 to address these matters further. - Bernama
