Cong pledges support to AIMPLB in protest against Waqf Bill
Mohammed Ali Shabbir
on Sunday assured full support to All India Muslim Personal Law Board (
AIMPLB
) in its ongoing agitation against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
Addressing a round table conference titled 'Save Waqf, Save Constitution Movement' in the city, Shabbir Ali said the Congress would back all legal and democratic efforts to safeguard waqf properties and uphold constitutional values.
He recalled that Telangana was the first state in the country to officially oppose the controversial Waqf Amendment Bill, with a govt-level meeting convened on Aug 19, 2024. "Under chief minister A Revanth Reddy's leadership, the
Telangana Congress
govt stood with the Muslim community from the very beginning," he said.
Shabbir Ali informed the participants that the party was actively pursuing a legal challenge in the Supreme Court and expressed hope that a stay on the new Act would be secured. "This is a battle for justice. This is about protecting constitutional guarantees for minorities," he added.
Calling for robust public mobilisation, he suggested the formation of coordination committees at the lowest levels to ensure the success of all agitation programmes led by AIMPLB. He also urged the Board to meet TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud and share their programme details, assuring that local Congress leaders would be involved in every step of the movement.

‘Fight to protect democracy': Opposition leaders react to detention during ‘vote chori' protest
Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the Opposition is protesting for the right to vote for every Indian, and demanded a 'clean and pure' voter list, as top opposition leaders were stopped on Monday from marching to the Election Commission (EC) office against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar. The Delhi Police said it had detained Opposition MPs including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut and TMC's Sagarika Ghose, during the protest. No one had sought permission for the protest march to the Election Commission, police said. Gandhi said the Election Commission is silent as the truth is before the entire nation, after his charge that over one lakh votes in an assembly constituency in Karnataka were found to be fake in a research conducted by his party. 'They (EC) cannot talk as the truth is before the entire nation,' he said as he was being taken away in a bus by the police. 'This fight is not political—it is a fight to protect democracy, the Constitution, and the right to 'one person, one vote',' he said. — Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) August 11, 2025 Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said the protest against 'vote chori' and SIR is a fight to protect people's right to vote and a struggle to save democracy. In a post on X, he said, 'BJP's cowardly dictatorship will not work. This is a fight to protect people's right to vote. This is a struggle to save democracy. The allies of the INDIA coalition will surely expose this BJP conspiracy to shred the Constitution.' #VoteChori — Mallikarjun Kharge (@kharge) August 11, 2025 Democracy was being 'assaulted and murdered right outside Parliament,' alleged Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh. He told PTI that Opposition MPs wanted to take out a peaceful march to the EC office as a mark of protest against the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls, but were stopped by the police. 'We had already written to the EC that all MPs collectively wanted to hand over a memorandum to the EC,' he said. 'Chunav Aayog is Chunav Aayog, it cannot be churao aayog,' Ramesh told PTI. Here is our original request to the ECI. It is for the Opposition MPs to collectively hand over a memoradum and NOT for just a delegation — Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) August 11, 2025 Congress MP KC Venugopal on Monday posted on X saying, 'This is nothing but a desperate attempt to silence the Opposition on this burning issue of saving democracy from mass rigging. Such intimidation will not work for us, and we will continue to fight for the people's inalienable right to vote.' We were holding a peaceful march to the ECI office, but the police has detained all of us, including INC President Sh. Mallikarjun @kharge ji, LOP Sh. @RahulGandhi ji and hundreds of INDIA bloc leaders. This is nothing but a desperate attempt to silence the opposition on this… — K C Venugopal (@kcvenugopalmp) August 11, 2025 Wearing white caps with a red cross on the words 'SIR' and 'vote chori', the protesting MPs started their march from Parliament's Makar Dwar raising slogans against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar and 'vote chori' while carrying placards and banners.

Air India Flight Door Fails To Open At Raipur Airport; Passengers Stranded For An Hour
Raipur: A technical snag in an Air India flight arriving from Delhi led to a tense hour-long delay at Raipur airport, leaving around 160 passengers, including a sitting MLA, stranded inside the aircraft with no immediate explanation. Flight AI 2797 departed Delhi at 8.15 p.m. and landed at Raipur's Swami Vivekananda Airport at 10.05 p.m. on Sunday. However, upon touchdown, the aircraft's door failed to open due to what airline staff later described as a 'technical fault'. Passengers remained confined inside the plane until after 11.00 p.m., sparking confusion and concern. Among those onboard was Atal Srivastava, Congress MLA from Kota constituency in Bilaspur district. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the cabin crew initially offered no clear explanation, leading to growing unease among passengers. 'There was no communication for a while. People were anxious, especially after recent aviation incidents,' said one passenger, referring to the recent plane crash in Ahmedabad that has heightened public sensitivity around air safety. The situation reportedly escalated when passengers noticed a halt in power supply within the aircraft, further fuelling speculation of a malfunction. However, Air India officials later clarified that the delay was part of a routine security drill and not a safety breach. The explanation, however, did little to pacify passengers who had already endured an hour of uncertainty. Airport authorities confirmed that no injuries or medical emergencies occurred during the delay, and all passengers eventually disembarked safely. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has not issued a formal statement on the incident as of Monday afternoon. This marks yet another instance of technical irregularity involving Air India flights in recent months, raising questions about operational readiness and passenger communication protocols. While the airline maintains that safety was never compromised, the incident has reignited concerns over the handling of in-flight disruptions and the psychological toll on passengers. As air travel rebounds post-pandemic, aviation authorities may face increasing pressure to ensure not just mechanical reliability but also transparent and timely communication with passengers during unexpected delays.
