Rafizi: Use current political situation to strengthen PKR in Sarawak
KUCHING: PKR members in Sarawak have been urged to view the current political situation in the state as an opportunity to regroup and strengthen themselves for future challenges.
Incumbent PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli said that, given Sarawakians' current preference for the existing state government, party members should use this period as an opportunity to 'invest' in cultivating a new generation of party leaders.
'This low point in our political cycle is a good time for us to invest in the party's future. Use this period to develop new talent, because the cycle will turn and our time will come,' he said at the Hidupkan Idealisme Reformasi Dalam Ujian Kuasa (HIRUK) Tour programme last night.
According to him, based on PKR's performance in past elections in Sarawak, the party has shown potential to win at least three parliamentary seats in the future.
'Miri is indeed our stronghold here in Sarawak, but there are also two or three other parliamentary constituencies with real potential,' he said, citing Kanowit, Selangau, and Puncak Borneo as among the promising seats.
In the 15th General Election (GE15), PKR successfully retained the Miri parliamentary seat for three consecutive terms since GE13 in 2013.
Rafizi said that PKR had previously won the Selangau and Puncak Borneo parliamentary seats, and narrowly lost the Kanowit seat in the GE15.
He added that whoever is elected in the party election on May 23 should give serious attention to the concerns raised by members in Sarawak, particularly in ensuring the party remains relevant in the state.

Boycott PKR in GE16 greets Nurul Izzah's victory; grassroots foresee rot from prevalent family ties
WHAT an anti-climax! Instead of being jubilant, many Reformasi diehards who have been vital lynchpins to PKR's very existence have vowed to disassociate themselves from the party which they claimed have switched to self-destruction mode following Nurul Izzah Anwar's victory against incumbent Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli in the PKR deputy presidency race. This came about as Malaysiakini broke the news citing party election committee chairperson Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa as having announced that Nurul Izzah has toppled the Economy Minister with 9,803 votes. Sarcasm of sorts filled the news portal's comments section with the most popular being 'hopefully later, Nurul Izzah's other sisters will contest for the party's vice-presidency'. Another insinuated that her younger siblings may even vie for head of PKR's youth wing or even PMX's son-in-law (Nurul Izzah's husband) as a member of the party's Central Leadership Council (MPP). On a more serious note, many anticipated the party to languish from nepotism, hence wanting to disassociate themselves from PKR come the 16th General Election (GE16). Boycotting the party or abstain from voting in GE16 which means turning their back to the PKR-led Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition would point to PMX being a one-term premier, insinuated one disgruntled grassroot member. One commenter expressed disbelief at how PMX used to hit out at twice former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad for promoting his son Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir as his successor yet he (PMX) himself is doing the exact same thing now. Another contended that it has become clear why prominent leaders like Datuk Ezam Mohd Nor (a founding PJR member) or Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali (former deputy president) eventually left the party to join the opposition while one is bracing for PKR/ruling PH coalition to come under fire from their own supporters. 'There's no need to await the official results for the writing was already on the wall … I wish PH a happy return to being an opposition … confirm you shall be a flop in GE16; you've lost my vote,' fumed one supposedly staunch PKR backer. PAS over the moon with Cleopatra joining party; could Siti Kasim be next?
SO social media influencer and activist Nur Fathiah Syazwana Shaharuddin who is better known as Cleopatra has officially joined Islamist party PAS on May 31. Reason cited? The need to provide a better future for her children. In a Facebook post, PAS' Muslimat Wing noted that Cleopatra submitted her application to wing chief Nuridah Mohd Salleh. Nuridah said the wing has long remained committed to championing the welfare of vulnerable groups such as the poor, people with disabilities, the elderly, single mothers and orphans. 'Cleopatra's entry into PAS is seen as a strategic move to strengthen women's political engagement in Malaysia and to further the cause of community welfare,' it justified. A single mother and entrepreneur, Cleopatrah also founded women's and community rights group called the Hetero Action Women Alliance (HAWA). This move was widely discussed on social media as highlighted by a post on X by capik (@syfqanwar). He sarcastically labelled it the 'most important transfer this century'. Could it be because she has been subject to all manner of juicy gossip? In 2024, the 31-year-old was forced to deny that she had tied the knot with former deputy inspector-general of police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Zinin in Thailand after a purported marriage certificate went public (which was later confirmed by the authorities to be fake). Or perhaps it is because Cleopatra stood as an independent candidate for the Batu parliamentary seat in 15th General Election (GE15). Alas, her popularity online did not translate into votes as she lost her deposit with a measly 628 votes. It was then cheekily suggested by some netizens that perhaps the next person to join PAS would be fire brand lawyer Siti Kasim! The poster said such an occurrence would indicate a totally warped reality involving different multiverses (alluding to Marvel Studio's multiverse concept). But why not? Like Cleopatra, Siti Kasim also lost her deposit contesting the 10-corner Batu seat contest by garnering just 653 votes. Given her outspoken views on women's rights (among various issues), Siti Kasim can also be described as a social activist who fits the Islamist party's stated vision mission in championing 'vulnerable groups'. Certainly, it would be massive coup for PAS if it is able to rope in the legal eagle who has previously had many run-ins with the Islamist party. It would mark a complete U-turn on the stated principles of the lawyer with colourful hair-dos. Meanwhile, Cleopatra's reason for joining PAS was roundly mocked by some. Since when the welfare of children is used as justification for joining a political party, wondered one commenter. Another commenter claimed that the move was seen as a sure way to get into the Dewan Rakyat. With a seat secured – possibly in Kedah or Kelantan – Cleopatra would be entitled to a pension, thus securing the future of her kids. As cheekily suggested, the entry of 31-year-old Cleopatra into the party was being celebrated by the turbaned males in PAS. This poses the question if Siti Kasim's joining PAS would generate a similar reception.
