Malaysia's current account surplus shrinks to 28-year low
MALAYSIA'S current account surplus sank to just RM0.3 billion, or 0.1% of gross domestic product (GDP), in the second quarter of 2025 (Q225) – the smallest since 1997 – as weaker mining exports and surging imports for electronics and data centres hit the balance of payments.
The figure marked a steep drop from RM16.7 billion (3.4% of GDP) in Q125, with the goods account surplus narrowing to RM17.0 billion.
The services account deficit improved slightly to RM3.3 billion on higher travel receipts, but the secondary income deficit widened sharply to RM4.6 billion due to lower receipts into the country.
Chief Statistician Datuk Sri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the weaker goods surplus reflected 'planned maintenance activities' in the mining sector and higher capital imports, particularly in E&E products and data centre equipment.
He noted that FDI inflows fell to RM1.6 billion from RM15.6 billion in Q125, mainly into the services sector – particularly financial activities and ICT – from Singapore, Japan and the UK.
These inflows were partly offset by reinvestment outflows, driven by higher dividend payments and losses by some foreign manufacturers.
BNM Governor Datuk Sri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour stressed the deterioration was 'largely attributable to cyclical factors', including a RM5.1 billion quarter-on-quarter drop in mining-related exports.
He said the rise in capital imports tied to data centre projects 'will strengthen our exports in the long term' as these facilities come online, adding that some are already ramping up service exports.
He also pointed to continued strength in tourism, with travel receipts jumping to RM95.3 billion in 2024 from RM68 billion in 2023, a trend expected to continue into 2026 with better flight connectivity and the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.
The financial account recorded a much smaller net outflow of RM2.2 billion in Q225, versus RM20.3 billion in Q125, mostly from interbank transactions with overseas financial institutions.
Abdul Rasheed said the current account surplus for 2025 is projected at 1.5%–2.5% of GDP, compared to 1.7% in the first half, supported by sustained global demand for E&E, rising data centre services, and inbound tourism.

Ipoh Sentral: Priority For Recreational Park To Open Before Commercial Projects
IPOH, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The developer of the Ipoh Sentral project site has been reminded to complete the construction of a recreational park first before developing any commercial projects. Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the construction of the recreational park is among the first phase in construction plans for the Ipoh Sentral project which is expected to be completed within a year. He said the condition was set by the government to ensure that local people experience the benefits of development in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI. "We want developers to prioritise the public first, which is our condition ... we have to deliver the recreational park to the local community first before they can pursue profits even though this park brings no financial gain to the developer. "What is the point of this development if the local people cannot enjoy it. For the people of Perak, especially those in Ipoh, I have set a condition for the developer, that within six to 12 months, we want to deliver the first phase of this recreational park to be open to the public. So the developer must remember this as one of the key conditions,' he said during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Ipoh Sentral project here today. The ceremony was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim together with Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, and was also attended by MRCB Land chairman Tan Sri Mohd Annuar Zaini. Loke said the project, which is located adjacent to the Ipoh train station, will be developed using the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) concept by integrating rail, bus, taxi and e-hailing services, and pedestrian and cycling lanes. 'This development concept is in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI and the National Transport Master Plan, and supports the direction of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) which makes TOD the key driver of urban growth. 'This approach promotes sustainable lifestyles, reduces traffic congestion, concentrates development around stations and transport hubs, and strengthens the role of public transport as one of the people's main choices,' he said.

RM20k boost for Penang Badminton Association
KUALA LUMPUR: The 100th anniversary celebration of the Penang Badminton Association was made more meaningful when CitaGlobal Berhad contributed RM20,000 to inspire the nurturing of more stars on par with legend Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei. Honorary Life President of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and Executive Chairman and President of CitaGlobal Berhad, Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria described Penang as still having 'unfinished business' in strengthening the national badminton ecosystem. 'That is why, as a badminton leader, I always value the leadership of Penang and throughout my seven years as president (of the Badminton Association of Malaysia), they have helped me greatly in leading the development of badminton not only in Penang but also across Malaysia. 'I think there is another so-called unfinished business. That is the setting up of a regional academy, and with this centenary celebration, it should basically be pursued. Because I think just having a centre like the Petronas Badminton Academy here, it will actually be more meaningful if we can also have a regional academy in Penang,' he told reporters after presenting the cheque at Akademi Badminton Malaysia, here today. Meanwhile, Penang Badminton Association president Datuk Kah Kau Kiak said Chong Wei has been appointed as the 100th Anniversary Ambassador and will enliven the gala night scheduled for Nov 22. Established in 1925, the Penang Badminton Association is the oldest state badminton association in Malaysia and continues to be a 'fertile ground' for producing champions, with Chong Wei remaining the symbol of its success. - Bernama
