EPS To Kick Off 2026 Poll Campaign Today, Hopes To Revive AIADMK's Fortunes

NDTV15 hours ago
Ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) would launch his statewide campaign this evening from Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district - a traditional AIADMK stronghold in the western region of the state. The campaign is expected to cover all 234 constituencies, with the tagline "Protecting People and Redeeming Tamil Nadu."
EPS, who will address a public rally this evening, is expected to highlight what he calls the "failures and unfulfilled promises" of the ruling DMK government. His campaign will also focus on local issues in each constituency, in addition to statewide concerns such as law and order, women's safety, and the growing drug menace.
This campaign is widely seen as a make-or-break moment for the AIADMK, which has suffered three successive election defeats since the death of its charismatic leader J Jayalalithaa in 2016. The party's decline began under the dual leadership of EPS and O Panneerselvam (OPS) and has continued even after EPS emerged as the sole leader.
After walking out of its alliance with the BJP before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls - where both parties had a bad luck as the DMK-led alliance swept the state - the AIADMK has cautiously revived its ties with the saffron party. However, the alliance appears fragile, with little ground-level synergy and scepticism among cadres.
One of the key challenges for EPS is the lack of strong allies, aside from the BJP, which itself holds minimal sway in Tamil Nadu. The entry of actor Vijay's Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has further complicated the political arithmetic. Vijay has categorically ruled out any alliance with the BJP directly or indirectly, keeping the AIADMK at arm's length.
Vijay's recent announcement as TVK's Chief Ministerial candidate and his plans to tour the state from September to December, along with a parallel membership drive, signal his intent to become a serious contender. Drawing comparisons with legends like CN Annadurai and MG Ramachandran, Vijay aims to replicate their trajectory from cinema to the Chief Minister's chair.
As speculation brews over potential political realignments, a few key questions remain unanswered:
Will AIADMK eventually sever ties with BJP to woo Vijay's TVK?
Will Vijay consider an alliance as a dominant player, or is he eyeing a solo march to Fort St George?
On the other hand, the ruling DMK's alliance remains intact and formidable. Having won three consecutive elections, the party is banking on its welfare programmes such as monthly Rs 1000 assistance for women, free bus rides for women, free breakfast for school children, and youth skill development schemes to retain its base. The DMK has also launched a door-to-door membership campaign aiming to enroll 30 per cent of the state's voters as party members.
With elections still nine months away, the political landscape in Tamil Nadu is heating up. What once looked like a bipolar contest is now shaping into a four-cornered battle - between the DMK-led front, AIADMK-BJP alliance, TVK, and Director Seeman's NTK.

Farmers' protest forces postponement of land survey for Shaktipeeth in Sangli

Kolhapur: Land mapping and surveys for the Shaktipeeth Expressway was postponed in Sangli's Dongarsoni village on Monday because of huge protests from farmers across 12 districts in Maharashtra. A total of 8,500 hectares of farmland will be acquired for this 802km long highway project connecting 12 districts in the state and costing about Rs 86,000 crore. It aims to connect major pilgrimage sites and reduce travel time between Nagpur and Goa to about seven hours. Mahesh Kharade, Sangli district president of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, said, "The farmers gathered on Monday morning at Dongarsoni village of Tasgaon tehsil to oppose the land survey for the Shaktipeeth project, but no one arrived for the exercise. On Tuesday, they have declared land mapping at Siddhewadi village. The farmers will strongly oppose the project there as well. We won't let this project go on. What's the use of this highway if fertile land is going to be acquired?" In Sangli district, the Shaktipeeth Expressway will pass through 19 villages, for which 717.187 hectares of farmland from 7,611 farmers will be acquired. The land survey and mapping from 10 villages at Tasgaon tehsil in Sangli district have been planned to be carried out between July 7 and 22. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo On Monday noon, a meeting of farmers from Chandgad, Ajara and Gadhinglaj tehsils was held at Gadhinglaj town after the local Chandgad MLA Shivaji Patil (independent MLA supporting BJP) put forward a demand in front of MSRDC officials to take the Shaktipeeth Highway via Gadhinglaj, Ajara and Chandgad route to allow industrial and tourism development. Farmers in large numbers gathered for the meeting and showed displeasure over the MLA's statement, saying that MLA should not shatter the dreams of farmers. Sangram Kupekar, former zilla parishad member, said, "MLA Patil is seeking development, which is not required here. Thousands of hectares of fertile farmland will be lost to the unnecessary project. Minister Bandi Sanjay Attacks Congress, Alleges Special Treatment To Akbaruddin Owaisi

Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar launched a scathing attack on the Telangana government on Monday, questioning alleged special exemptions granted to AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi's family and condemning alleged threats against media houses. Speaking to reporters in Jagtial district after inaugurating Central development projects, the Union minister alleged double standards and demanded a clarification from the Congress-led Revanth Reddy government in Telangana. Bandi Sanjay specifically questioned the Hyderabad Development Authority (HYDRA), stating, "Are the HYDRA authorities demolishing the houses of the poor in the name of encroachments, but giving exemptions to Akbaruddin Owaisi's family, who have built buildings in lakes and ponds and are running colleges and businesses there?" He cited claims by HYDRA that they cannot demolish illegal constructions at Mr Owaisi's college due to the presence of 10,000 students, contrasting this with the demolition of "small houses and huts built by poor people in the Musi river catchment areas, who have no source of livelihood or shelter". "Do only the lives of Akbaruddin Owaisi's family have value? Don't the lives of poor people matter? Are they not human?" the minister asked, accusing the government of turning a blind eye to alleged transgressions by AIMMIM leaders, including non-payment of electricity bills and encroachment. The Union Minister also strongly criticised the alleged preparations by Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders to attack the offices of Andhra Jyothi and other news outlets for publishing critical stories. "When media houses are being attacked, what is the chief minister doing? What is the government doing?" he demanded. Reminding Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of the time he was jailed, Mr Sanjay asked, "Weren't you jailed unjustly and denied bail? Have you forgotten all that and now joined hands with them (the BRS)?" The BJP, he said, would "always stand at the forefront in protecting democracy and press freedom". Daring BRS leaders, he added, "Attack the media houses and see what happens. Within two hours of your attack, our BJYM (BJP youth wing) activists will take care of your BRS office and the TV channel in it. Telangana is no longer BRS' fiefdom."
