Wrexham dressing room's ice-cold reaction to Hugh Jackman as star speaks out

Daily Mirror7 days ago
Hugh Jackman was snubbed by Wrexham players when visiting them after a game in 2023, despite other stars like Will Ferrell getting warm welcomes in the dressing room
A former Wrexham captain has lifted the lid on how Hollywood A-lister Hugh Jackman was snubbed by players during a visit to the team's changing room. A whole host of celebrities have dropped in to watch the Welsh outfit in action since the club was bought by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in February 2021.
Famous faces seen at the Racecourse Ground have included Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria, Magic Mike actor Channing Tatum and Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. Will Ferrell also delighted the Wrexham squad by stopping off to say hello to them in February 2023.

However, ex-Red Dragons skipper Ben Tozer has now revealed how Jackman was met with a much frostier reception later that year. Reynolds' Deadpool and Wolverine co-star was in town in August 2023 to take in Wrexham's first EFL game in 15 years.

The club's opening match of the season in League Two was eagerly anticipated, but ended in disappointment as Phil Parkinson 's side suffered a 5-3 home defeat to MK Dons. And the Wrexham players were in no mood to talk when Jackman called in to the dressing room after the game to offer his condolences.
Tozer, who recently announced his retirement from football, discussed rubbing shoulders with the stars during an appearance on Sky Sports Radio.
"The one where I had to pinch myself was when Will Ferrell walked in the dressing room before a game," he said. "I was like, 'I have to shake and bake with that guy,' because of Talladega Nights.

"But unfortunately, when Hugh Jackman came into the dressing room, he got the cold shoulder because we'd lost the game. He walked in and no one was bothered. Everyone was just a bit like, 'Can you get out please? We don't want anyone in here.'"
Jackman has previously opened up on his love for Wrexham and the Welcome to Wrexham documentary, which charts the club's journey under the ownership of Reynolds and McElhenney.

Posting on Instagram in July 2023, the Australian said: "You don't even have to like @vancityreynolds. @wrexham_afc @wrexhamfx is the people, the town, the heart, the show that is balm for the soul."
He also once revealed how their ownership of Wrexham nearly led him to buy a football club. "I will admit to you that when Ryan [Reynolds] bought that team, I did get more than one offer from rivals of that team for £1 to come in as a co-owner and it did seriously tempt me," Jackman said while appearing on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show.

"This whole thing of outsiders coming in and buying football teams, it feels a little, I don't know, easy. I have decided to go one step further, I am actually going to try out for the team."
While Jackman ultimately resisted following Reynolds into becoming the owner of a football club, the pair recently announced that they had entered a different sporting venture together. The two actors were confirmed in June as the new owners of the BONDS Flying Roos sailing team.

The Australian team competes in the international SailGP competition, which has also attracted several other high-profile investors, including Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe and American actress Anne Hathaway.
In a joint statement, Reynolds and Jackman said: "We're incredibly excited to set sail together in this new adventure. Hugh brings a deep love for and pride in his home country as well as being an avid fan of sailing.
"He will also be bringing his overly clingy emotional support human along for the ride. Apologies in advance to Australia."

What to expect as Royal Welsh Show 2025 gets under way

The showground is ready and waiting, the main ring attractions are all scheduled, and the livestock are being spruced up in anticipation of awards – Show week is here. It is now 121 years since a group of influential landowners came together to form the Welsh National Agricultural Society – an organisation that would later morph into the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society. They held the first show that year in Aberystwyth, but since 1963 Llanelwedd, on the edge of Builth Wells, has been the thumping heartbeat of Europe's largest agricultural event. They come from far and wide to exhibit – and to enjoy the many and varied displays, events, and attractions that the show brings. Whether it's daredevil displays from horseback riders, motorbike experts or parachute teams, or the creme de la creme of Welsh livestock, the reasons to love the Royal Welsh Show are plentiful. Powys truly is the place to be when the show comes around – across four days from Monday to Friday, July 21-24, tens of thousands of people will be making their way to the showground to experience the event. As usual, there is a jam-packed schedule of livestock classes and special awards for a wide range of agricultural and rural competitions, attracting entries from far and wide. For the first time this year the show will include a Heavy Horse Village, which provides visitors with a chance to celebrate the majestic power and heritage of traditional working horses in a dedicated display area. The whole event is also a great celebration of Wales' thriving food scene, and the food village and hall provides a highlight for many visitors to the show. One of the key questions on many people's minds this weekend, though, will be what's happening above our heads. We've had some patchy shows weather-wise over the years – who would want to predict a British summer? – including an absolute scorcher of a year in 2022 that saw some visitors having to slap the factor 50 onto their pigs. Well, despite this year having already seen some records tumble for hot and dry weather across the UK, the show is looking like it's much cooler this year. The Met Office is forecasting a nice, cool event, with scattered showers meaning outdoor activities being compromised.

Wrexham AFC: Liberato Cacace signs, Luke Bolton leaves

Liberato Cacace has completed his move to Wrexham from Serie B outfit Empoli for an undisclosed fee. The left-back, who has been capped 33 times for New Zealand, has signed a contract keeping him with the Reds until the end of the 2027-2028 season. He becomes the third new signing ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign, joining goalkeeper Danny Ward and striker Ryan Hardie at Wrexham who will compete in the second tier for the first time in 43 years in 2025-26 after securing an historic third successive promotion. Cacace has spent the last three-and-a-half years with Empoli, relegated from Serie A last season, having joined initially on loan from Belgium side Sint-Truiden in January 2022 before making the move permanent that summer. He began his career with home-town club Wellington Phoenix who beat Wrexham 1-0 at Sky Stadium on Saturday in the final game of the pre-season tour to Australia and New Zealand. There are just under three weeks until the new campaign kicks-off but Luke Boulton won't be on board when Wrexham start off against Southampton - relegated from the Premier League last term - at St Marys Stadium on Saturday August 9 (12.30pm kick-off). Bolton has left the club and signed for League One outfit Mansfield Town on a permanent deal, putting pen to paper on a two-year contract at Field Mill. The wing-back joined the Reds from Salford City in January 2024 and made 17 League Two appearances as Phil Parkinson's men finished runners up to secure promotion to League One. However, the 25-year-old only made three appearances in cup competitions last seasons. More new signings are expected in the coming weeks with Wrexham linked with a host of players, including Bolton Wanderers captain George Thomason, and free agents Josh Windass and Michael Smith. Forwards Windass and Smith have left Sheffield Wednesday after the troubled Championship club said their contracts had been ended "by mutual consent".
