Kota Kinabalu: BIMP-EAGA Business Council (BEBC-Sabah) Chairman Dr. Raymond Alfred revealed its unwavering support for developing biogas energy infrastructure on Banggi Island. He said this strategic initiative aims to bolster sustainable energy security and foster inclusive economic growth in the region. 'Banggi Island, including Kudat and Kota Marudu, boasts a burgeoning oil palm industry, generating substantial biomass waste like POME and EFB…This presents a unique opportunity to transform Banggi into a model for rural renewable energy and agro-industrial development. I am eager to collaborate with Dato Verdon Bahanda, the Member of Parliament for Kudat, on this project,' he added. Preliminary assessments indicate Banggi Island's potential to generate over 1.5 GWh of renewable electricity annually by converting palm oil mill effluent and other biomass by-products into biogas. The clean energy source could power hundreds of rural homes and businesses, significantly reducing reliance on expensive diesel-generated electricity. Raymond further emphasized, 'This initiative aligns perfectly with the BIMP-EAGA Vision 2025, promoting green infrastructure, robust local value chains, and sustainable livelihoods. It's also crucial for Banggi's long-term goal of achieving full district status, with energy self-sufficiency forming a cornerstone of its local governance and development.' The Business Council advocates for: A comprehensive feasibility study involving state agencies, palm oil stakeholders, and renewable energy experts.

SE urges SOGT maintenance postponement to avoid major power cuts

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity (SE) has requested Petronas to postpone scheduled maintenance at the Sabah Oil and Gas Terminal (SOGT) to avoid large-scale electricity rationing affecting around 600,000 domestic users in Sabah and Labuan. SE Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said the planned rotation-based rationing is expected to run from this Friday until 7 August across the state and Labuan. He explained that initial arrangements had anticipated no supply disruption, following earlier discussions with Petronas and the Energy Commission of Sabah (Ecos). However, he said new information received on Tuesday revealed that the system could not operate on alternative fuel as expected, potentially reducing grid capacity by 195 Megawatts for seven days. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Mohd Yaakob said further talks with Petronas would be held later in the day to explore the possibility of delaying the maintenance until capacity stabilises. He added that postponing the works would help ease the situation, as scheduled outages would otherwise affect users during peak hours from 10am to 10pm, lasting one to two hours each time. Why no noise when big tech companies mine data, asks Fahmi

(Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil today questioned the apparent double standards by detractors of a policy on mobile data sharing with a government agency. Fahmi said there was a lot of 'hue and cry' when the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission issued a directive in June requiring phone companies to hand over data on all mobile phone calls made from January to March. MCMC's request for such data was aimed at collecting data for the statistics department. The policy, however, led to brickbats, including by the opposition and MCA, who raised concerns over privacy and data security. Today, Fahmi pointed out that tech giant Google had been fined US$314 million for allegedly stealing data from the phones of 14 million Californians. Earlier this month, a California court ordered Google to pay over US$314.6 million to Android smartphone users in the state after they filed a class-action lawsuit. The jury agreed with claims that the search engine was liable for sending and receiving information from Android devices without users' permission. 'And yet we made no noise about the kind of data that we give away practically free, every single day, to social media platforms, to search engines, to artificial intelligence, to large language models,' Fahmi said when officiating the International Connectivity Conference and Expo here. In June, Fahmi assured the public that MCMC was not collecting any personal information from telecommunications companies. Nor will the shared data be provided in a form that contains any personally identifiable information. Derek John Fernandez, an MCMC commissioner, previously told FMT the sharing of anonymised mobile phone data was neither new nor intrusive. It also mirrors what global tech platforms already do every day, he said. Fernandez also said the move is consistent with the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and falls within international best practices on data use for infrastructure planning and national development. Govt to boost VM2026 on social media
KUALA LUMPUR: The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry will utilise social media platforms to promote Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VM2026) globally. Its Deputy Minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan said Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube and Xiaohongshu will be used to market Malaysia as an appealing travel destination. "The ministry is crafting consistent and effective narratives to make Malaysia appear as a prime travel destination," he said in reply to Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (PN-Masjid Tanah) during the Minister Question Time today. He added that Malaysia is employing targeted marketing strategies to attract tourists from China, Australia, India, Indonesia, Central Asia, Russia, Middle East, the United Kingdom, Chinese Taipei, Germany and Asean nations. "We are also increasing traffic of visitors to Malaysia by adding flight routes to main Malaysian cities from international destinations." He also said the ministry is engaging with online travel agencies to ensure that the travel packages offered remain competitive.
