All the perfumes of Arabia will not wash away the corruption indulged in by CM Vijayan, says Venugopal
Tearing into the governance by the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan-led government which has been in power for nine years, AICC General Secretary and Alappuzha Lok Sabha member K.C. Venugopal on Monday slammed the inept way things were happening in Kerala.
'The stage has come when all the perfume of Arabia will not be able to wash away the stains of corruption indulged in by Vijayan,' said Venugopal.
He said this while inaugurating the Nilambur Assembly bye-election convention and asked the people of Nilambur to ensure that everyone votes for Aryadan Shoukath, which will set the ball rolling for the exit of CM Vijayan, as the 2026 Assembly elections are round the corner.
Venugopal said that by virtue of being the Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, he was shocked to hear the sequence of events of what happened, when he attended the meeting held last week to discuss the crumbling of the National Highway (NH)-66 passing through Malappuram.
'I was really surprised to hear the way CM Vijayan, who was always taking credit for NH-66 till it crumbled, reacted to the news. The moment the news surfaced that NH-66 was breaking not at one place, but at several spots, he did not even go and visit the spots where the highway has developed cracks, despite being in Malappuram for the past two days,' said Venugopal.
'Since I was at the meeting last week with the Chairman of the National Highway Authority of India and the Transport Secretary, I know that major corruption has taken place in the construction of NH-66, but Vijayan now maintains stoic silence on the issue,' said Venugopal.
Turning against CM Vijayan, who on Sunday spoke about being 'treacherous', Venugopal said if there was one person who could be equated to that word, it was none other than Vijayan, as all would recall the interview given by the Chief Minister to an English national daily wherein he insulted Malappuram district.
'CM Vijayan said that '150 kg of gold and hawala money worth Rs 123 crore were seized by the Kerala Police in the last five years from Malappuram district. This money is entering Kerala for anti-State and anti-national activities'. This is what Vijayan said and this is an insult to Malappuram ,' added Venugopal.
"Another classic example of the treacherous role played by Vijayan is how he worked to see the victory of BJP candidate Suresh Gopi from the Thrissur Lok Sabha after he successfully created confusion at the famed Thrissur Pooram festivities," he pointed out.
Nilambur goes to the polls on June 19 after sitting two-time Left Independent legislator quit the Assembly following difference of opinion with CM Vijayan.
Pitted in the poll is Aryadan Shoukath of the Congress, M. Swaraj of the CPI-M, Mohan George of the BJP and Anvar, who is contesting as a candidate of the All India Trinamool Congress.

Samruddhi Mahamarg opens fully, cuts down travel time from Mumbai to Nagpur by 9 hours
The Hindu Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg is now open end to end after the 76-kilometre leg between Igatpuri and Amane (Thane) was inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday, providing a seamless 701-kilometre connectivity from Mumbai to Nagpur. The six-lane expressway that is now fully operational will reduce the travel time between the two cities by half from 17 hours to around eight hours. The event organised at Igatpuri was also attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar and other ministers of the Mahayuti government. The completion of the last leg brings the entire project to realisation after decades of intricate engineering issues, political will and huge investments. The project was initially estimated at Rs 55,500 crore, but as it crossed various technical and logistical barriers and the project cost rose to over Rs 61,000 crore. At the inauguration, Fadnavis, who initially conceptualised the project in his first tenure as a CM, said, 'This is not merely a road, it is a corridor of Maharashtra's economy. It directly connects 24 districts with JNPT and paves the way for growth, transportation, logistics and opportunities in agriculture, tourism and industrial development.' The final stretch of the corridor passing through Nashik and Thane districts had some of the most challenging construction tasks. The 76-kilometre section comprises five twin tunnels of 10.73 kilometres in length, including the broadest tunnel in the country near Igatpuri that is 8 km long and 17.61 metres wide. It also has India's first fire-fighting system in a tunnel. As many as 17 viaducts with an aggregate length of more than 10.56 kilometers had to be built in hilly and forested territory. 'Because of a thick forest block, absence of access roads, hilly terrain and high rainfall in Igatpuri, we had to work with utmost caution. Nevertheless, we adopted the best safety measures to facilitate a safe working environment,' said K Mallikharjuna Rao, Business Unit Head, Hydro and Underground, Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, who were a part of construction of the twin tunnels. This section also has interchanges at Igatpuri, Khutghar and Amane. More than 60 low and high voltage power lines had to be shifted for the construction along with the new rail overbridge. The road now provides a safer route to the scary Kasara Ghat and shortens the journey time from Igatpuri to Kasara to eight minutes. The Samruddhi Mahamarg is a greenfield expressway designed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) that passes through 392 villages in 26 talukas in 10 districts. It directly links Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Washim, Buldhana, Jalna, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahilyanagar, Nashik and Thane and indirectly serves many others such as Chandrapur, Nanded, Dhule, Palghar and Raigad. The highest speed limit is fixed at 120 kmph on flat terrain and 100 kmph in ghat sections. Shinde said, 'We initiated the project in our term and completed it in our term only. This access control road will prove to be a game changer in economic activity between Mumbai and Vidarbha. Earlier, the farmer who used to travel for three days to come to Mumbai with farm produce now is able to reach the same day.' Besides its huge size, the expressway has been built focusing on conservation and intelligent engineering, according to MSRDC officials. For the conservation of wildlife, 92 overpasses and eight underpasses have been constructed for the safe passage of animals. Over 3.3 million trees have been transplanted with native species and 1,000 farm ponds have been created along the road to support agriculture in the regions. Fadnavis also highlighted advanced features such as temperature sensitive fire fighting systems, rainwater harvesting systems and well designed interchanges. 'The fire fighting system and temperature sensitive surfaces are designed such that they get activated when temperatures rise above 60 degrees Celsius and self-deactivates when the temperature goes below 30 degrees Celsius,' he said. The expressway will also facilitate the transportation of goods between MIHAN in Nagpur and JNPT in Mumbai with faster and more reliable cargo movement. In future, there are proposals for 200 MW of solar power generation along the route, with 22 facility centres being planned to benefit travellers. A gas pipeline from Konkan to Nagpur through this corridor is also planned that will ensure constant fuel supply to industries along this route. After Samruddhi Mahamarg, the government is now set to apply the model of access controlled expressways to other proposed corridors such as the Mumbai-Pune expressway missing link and Shaktipeeth Mahamarg, thereby increasing the network of expressways across the state. 'We are constructing an access control grid so that one is able to reach any corner of the state to other within 8 to 10 hours only,' Shinde added. In his address, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said, 'When the project started, everyone opposed it, some even organised protests… The estimated amount was Rs 55,500 crore, but owing to factors, it has crossed Rs 61,000 crore now. But the magnitude of this achievement for the state is huge.'

SilverLine or alternative? Kerala's wait for semi-high-speed rail to continue
Kochi: It seems the state's dream of having a semi-high-speed rail line is unlikely to become a reality soon, with neither Centre nor the state govt taking any concrete steps to take any of the two proposals forward. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The discussion chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan held with Union railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw earlier this week did not cover either the SilverLine proposal or the alternative semi-high-speed rail project proposed by Metroman E Sreedharan. As railways is yet to take a favourable stand on Sreedharan's proposal even after four months, the state govt's special representative in Delhi, K V Thomas, has requested Sreedharan to meet both Vaishnaw and railway officials. However, Sreedharan's stand is that he cannot approach Centre unless the state govt officially entrusts him to do so, demanding that the project proposal be taken up for further action. It seems the state govt is not planning to hold any further discussions with Sreedharan regarding the alternative proposal. The state govt submitted a draft of the semi-high-speed rail line proposal, prepared by Sreedharan, to the Union govt on Feb 10. The alternative proposal was submitted after the railway ministry informed that it could not approve the SilverLine project proposed by K-Rail. "It's been four months since the state govt submitted Sreedharan's proposal to Centre. But during the meeting, the proposal wasn't even mentioned or taken up for discussion. The only way to revive the project now is through pressure from Sreedharan himself. I've requested him to meet Vaishnav or railway officials directly to explain the project's benefits," said Thomas, who was present alongside Vijayan during the meeting with the railway minister. He also expressed unhappiness over Vijayan's recent statement expressing hope over SilverLine. "The chief minister's recent statement that SilverLine will become a reality indicates that the govt is still focused on that project. State govt representatives have not held any discussions with me before or after their recent meeting with the railway minister. I cannot approach Centre directly regarding my proposal unless the state govt officially requests me to take the initiative. If they do, I am ready to hold discussions with Centre," Sreedharan told TOI. Minister V Abdurahman, who is in charge of railways, said the govt was not opposed to considering Sreedharan's proposal. He, however, did not give a clear answer when asked whether the state would request Sreedharan to hold further discussions with Centre. "Kerala is open to implementing either the SilverLine or Sreedharan's alternative project. SilverLine is not a closed chapter," he said.

They committed to celebrating the festival peacefully and harmoniously, and assured continuous support to the district administration for maintaining a peaceful environment.
