Kalyan civic body's order for closure of meat shops on Independence Day sparks row
Responding to the notice issued by the KDMC, NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad on Sunday said he would host a mutton party on August 15 to highlight the 'freedom' of subjective food preferences.
As per the KDMC order, all slaughterhouses and shops of licensed butchers of goats, sheep, chickens, and large animals must remain closed for 24 hours from midnight of August 14 till midnight of August 15.
The civic body warned of action under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, 1949, if any animal is slaughtered or meat is sold during the specified period.
When contacted, KDMC Deputy Commissioner (Licenses) Kanchan Gaikwad told PTI that a similar order was issued every year since 1988 as part of a civic resolution.
Gaikwad, who signed the order, emphasised the move was in keeping with long-standing administrative resolutions to ensure public order and observance of important national occasions.
However, the Opposition was not convinced.
'I am planning to host a mutton party that day. On the day we got freedom, you are taking away our freedom to eat what we want,' Awhad, who represents the Kalwa-Mumbai assembly constituency in Thane district, told PTI.
Earlier on Sunday, Awhad stated on X, 'This is too much. Who are you to decide what people will eat and when?' Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray demanded the suspension of the KDMC commissioner for dictating the food choices of people.
'Who is the commissioner to tell people whether they can eat non-veg or not?' he asked.
Bhiwandi MP and NCP (SP) leader Suresh Mhatre too strongly opposed the restriction, calling it an infringement of people's traditional food habits.
'What one should eat and what one shouldn't is a question of the people. The local fishermen community eats vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Food habits are shaped by customs prevalent in different parts of the state. The ban on the sale of meat is incomprehensible,' Mhatre told reporters.
He said dietary preferences are deeply tied to cultural identity, particularly in coastal communities like the Agri Koli, and that civic authorities should respect these traditions.
Kalyan (West) MLA and ruling Shiv Sena leader Vishwanath Bhoir, however, defended the KDMC's move.
'People are not opposing the notice. What's the issue if one doesn't eat meat one day? The Opposition only knows how to criticise,' he said.

Protests continue over strays, detentions follow
New Delhi: Protests over Supreme Court's order on moving strays in Delhi-NCR to shelters continued for a second straight day, with 35-40 people briefly detained in Connaught Place area on Tuesday. The street outside Hanuman Mandir was packed with dog lovers and activists, many with placards and posters. While some protestors demanded justice for strays, others held up posters citing the "religious significance" of dogs. A large number of police and CRPF personnel were present at the spot. Chhattisgarh Waqf board directs mosques, dargahs to hoist tricolour on I-Day
All mosques and madrasas in Chhattisgarh have been directed by the State's Waqf Board to hoist the national flag on the occasion of Independence Day. The board's chairman Salim Raj said that the exercise would determine 'who loves the country and who doesn't'. Mr. Raj said a letter was issued on Monday to all mutawallis (caretakers) in this regard, saying the tricolour is 'a symbol of honour and pride' which is not linked to any religion. The letter addressed to the mutawallis said, 'Under the above subject, it is informed that our 78th Independence Day will be celebrated on 15th August 2025 this year. On the auspicious occasion of this national festival, the national flag should be hoisted at the main gate of all mosques/madrasas/dargahs situated in Chhattisgarh. Understand the importance of Independence Day and maintain the dignity of this occasion by showing patriotism, mutual unity and brotherhood.' On the need to issue such an order, Mr. Raj said, during his discussion with some mutawallis, they refused to hoist the tricolour. Above religion' 'Respecting the tricolour is above any religion. They had a problem in hoisting the tricolour and we were compelled to issue the order that flag hoisting should be done in front of the main entry of every mosque and in the presence of the Imam, mutawalli or mosque committee members,' the Waqf Board chairman said. He added that those who did not love the tricolour and the country, had no 'right to live on the land of Bharat Mata'. 'This will make it clear that people who loved the country were different from religious fundamentalists,' he added.
