Kalyan civic body's order for closure of meat shops on Independence Day sparks row
Responding to the notice issued by the KDMC, NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad on Sunday said he would host a mutton party on August 15 to highlight the 'freedom' of subjective food preferences.
As per the KDMC order, all slaughterhouses and shops of licensed butchers of goats, sheep, chickens, and large animals must remain closed for 24 hours from midnight of August 14 till midnight of August 15.
The civic body warned of action under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, 1949, if any animal is slaughtered or meat is sold during the specified period.
When contacted, KDMC Deputy Commissioner (Licenses) Kanchan Gaikwad told PTI that a similar order was issued every year since 1988 as part of a civic resolution.
Gaikwad, who signed the order, emphasised the move was in keeping with long-standing administrative resolutions to ensure public order and observance of important national occasions.
However, the Opposition was not convinced.
'I am planning to host a mutton party that day. On the day we got freedom, you are taking away our freedom to eat what we want,' Awhad, who represents the Kalwa-Mumbai assembly constituency in Thane district, told PTI.
Earlier on Sunday, Awhad stated on X, 'This is too much. Who are you to decide what people will eat and when?' Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray demanded the suspension of the KDMC commissioner for dictating the food choices of people.
'Who is the commissioner to tell people whether they can eat non-veg or not?' he asked.
Bhiwandi MP and NCP (SP) leader Suresh Mhatre too strongly opposed the restriction, calling it an infringement of people's traditional food habits.
'What one should eat and what one shouldn't is a question of the people. The local fishermen community eats vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Food habits are shaped by customs prevalent in different parts of the state. The ban on the sale of meat is incomprehensible,' Mhatre told reporters.
He said dietary preferences are deeply tied to cultural identity, particularly in coastal communities like the Agri Koli, and that civic authorities should respect these traditions.
Kalyan (West) MLA and ruling Shiv Sena leader Vishwanath Bhoir, however, defended the KDMC's move.
'People are not opposing the notice. What's the issue if one doesn't eat meat one day? The Opposition only knows how to criticise,' he said.

Akhilesh snubs EC for SIR in Bihar
1 2 Ranchi: Former UP CM and national president of Samajwadi Party (SP), Akhilesh Yadav , on Tuesday hit out at the Election Commission again over the timing of the special intensive revision (SIR), which has led to an impasse both inside Parliament and outside on the streets. On Rahul Gandhi's alleged exposé over the voters' list last week and the EC asking him to submit the claims under an affidavit, Yadav said, "The affidavit which EC is asking Rahul Gandhi today, we (Samajwadi Party) had already done so before the poll panel two years ago on the deletion of voters but till date there has been no action." "BJP is now resorting to vote theft, wants to snatch the right to vote from the people through the EC," he claimed while talking to reporters outside the Ranchi airport before heading to Nemra to pay tributes to JMM founder Shibu Soren, who died on August 4. Several VVIPs and VIPs have been visiting Nemra to pay their tributes to the 'Dishom Guru'. Notably, chief minister Hemant Soren and his entire family are currently camping at their ancestral house in Nemra for the shradha rituals, which will take place on August 16. Yadav, who is also an MP, further said, "BJP's tactics have been to conspire and plot when they don't have answers to credible and basic questions. Ahead of the Bihar assembly election, when it realised that they are on a sticky wicket, it is now conspiring to manipulate votes," he claimed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Knee Pain Knee pain | search ads Find Now Undo The SP president added, "SIR could have been brought in a year ago, but the reason it was introduced now ahead of the Bihar polls is to rob lakhs of people of their voting rights as part of its conspiracy." In Nemra, Yadav met Hemant, wife Kalpana, late Shibu's wife Roopi and other family members to offer his condolences. Taking to X after the meeting, Yadav wrote: "The life of Guruji (Shibu Soren) was full of struggle. He struggled for the rights of his people, tribal brothers and sisters, and issues of the community throughout his life. He saw political ups and downs for jal, jungle, jameen, but he did not get disappointed. He left behind a political lineage to his son Hemant Soren. We need to take it forward." Meanwhile, Nemra is gearing up for the mega congregation of political leaders during the shradha rituals. The nondescript village is fast witnessing basic infrastructural developments as the administration has laid a PCC road leading to the hamlet, besides constructing around four helipads for ease of landing of the VVIPs. The administration has also installed a mobile phone tower among other facilities. Administrative sources said once again, Nemra is set to witness a sea of crowds on August 16, and various teams have been formed to ensure proper law and order, and other requirements. Protests continue over strays, detentions follow
New Delhi: Protests over Supreme Court's order on moving strays in Delhi-NCR to shelters continued for a second straight day, with 35-40 people briefly detained in Connaught Place area on Tuesday. The street outside Hanuman Mandir was packed with dog lovers and activists, many with placards and posters. While some protestors demanded justice for strays, others held up posters citing the "religious significance" of dogs. A large number of police and CRPF personnel were present at the spot. Cops said some of the protestors were detained as they did not have the required permission to protest at the spot. No FIR has been registered so far. Swati, a lawyer who attended the protest, said, "The ABC rules, which talk about vaccination, proper procedure and sterilisation, have not been given any relevance." Others raised concerns about the conditions of the ABC centres currently in place. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If the Cat Bites You, Here's What It Really Means. Weird Cat Behavior Explained Undo "No one is taking proper care of the pre-existing centres. The dogs don't even get proper food there," said Jyoti, citing the present ABC mechanisms. Animal rights activist Ambika Shukla, who was also present at the protest, said dogs have been part of human habitation for centuries. "We have loved dogs since ages. But, animals are soft targets. And with this move, we would be depriving an entire species of freedom, that too at the time of Independence Day. Public safety needs to be seen in perspective," she said. The decision, she noted, would have a larger impact, beyond Delhi-NCR: "It's not just a pan-India thing, but pan-world." Most of the dog lovers present at the protest said the solution presented by the apex court was difficult to implement and unfeasible. "If you create a proper solution, caregivers will help the govt. Shelters take time and money; dumping dogs doesn't work," said Indrani Raj, who was present to show her support for the community. Many others, while acknowledging the problem, demanded a "more practical" solution. "The aim is that dogs should be safe. If govt can handle it, then we would not have a problem," said Sunil Sabarwal, one of those present. FIR registered in India Gate stir Delhi Police on Tuesday registered a case in connection with the protest held at India Gate the previous day against the SC order. According to a senior police official, the case was registered under Section 223 of BNS, which pertains to disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant. Monday's protest initially began near the court premises and later moved to India Gate around 6.30pm, drawing the attention of the dog-loving community and activists. The demonstrators gathered to express their disapproval of the court's directive, urging authorities to reconsider measures affecting the welfare of stray dogs. To maintain public order, police eventually dispersed the protesters at India Gate and briefly detained 25-30 of them. However, they were released shortly afterward. Chhattisgarh Waqf board directs mosques, dargahs to hoist tricolour on I-Day
All mosques and madrasas in Chhattisgarh have been directed by the State's Waqf Board to hoist the national flag on the occasion of Independence Day. The board's chairman Salim Raj said that the exercise would determine 'who loves the country and who doesn't'. Mr. Raj said a letter was issued on Monday to all mutawallis (caretakers) in this regard, saying the tricolour is 'a symbol of honour and pride' which is not linked to any religion. The letter addressed to the mutawallis said, 'Under the above subject, it is informed that our 78th Independence Day will be celebrated on 15th August 2025 this year. On the auspicious occasion of this national festival, the national flag should be hoisted at the main gate of all mosques/madrasas/dargahs situated in Chhattisgarh. Understand the importance of Independence Day and maintain the dignity of this occasion by showing patriotism, mutual unity and brotherhood.' On the need to issue such an order, Mr. Raj said, during his discussion with some mutawallis, they refused to hoist the tricolour. Above religion' 'Respecting the tricolour is above any religion. They had a problem in hoisting the tricolour and we were compelled to issue the order that flag hoisting should be done in front of the main entry of every mosque and in the presence of the Imam, mutawalli or mosque committee members,' the Waqf Board chairman said. He added that those who did not love the tricolour and the country, had no 'right to live on the land of Bharat Mata'. 'This will make it clear that people who loved the country were different from religious fundamentalists,' he added.
