Danny Philippou chewed on real knives for his extreme scene
The Philippou brothers can proudly say that they are willing to do whatever it takes to make their terrifying films – even if it means chewing knives themselves.
Bring Her Back is a new twisted horror movie from Australian twin filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou.
The brothers are the minds behind the 2022 smash hit Talk to Me, and sit down to chat about their new project, which is only the second movie they've ever made.
On a Zoom call at the crack of dawn on a Tuesday, I meet the enthusiastic filmmakers for the first time and immediately complain that they gave their main villain the same name as me.
They burst into laughter, setting the tone for this interview.
'You were a massive point of inspiration!' Danny says, fuelling my ego.

Without too much of a spoiler, there is one scene in the A24 supernatural horror that is so visceral, it reportedly left some fainting in cinemas.
Metro's Tori Brazier even said in her review: 'I physically recoiled at Bring Her Back's most disturbing and stomach-churning scene.'
So, of course, it was necessary to ask the brothers how on earth they came up with something so gory and disturbing.
'I thought of it. I'm pretty proud of myself, actually,' says Danny.
'It's always tapping into things that make you uncomfortable, make you personally cringe. And like, metal on teeth was always such a thing. And so it has always spawned from what is making me uncomfortable. And I think what also helped, in terms of the practical element, trying to pull it off practically, was the sound design of it.
'It was literally me chewing on a knife. So that's the sound that people hear, and that's why I feel it is so like, 'Oh, what the f**k'.'
He added that other nauseating noises in the film were also created by him, getting creative with the sound department.
'Even with the wood chewing, like our sound designer was just recording me chewing on bench tops and things like that. That's why you can't fake the sound.
'Sometimes you have to send it.'
The film stars Oscar-nominee Sally Hawkins as Laura, an eccentric foster parent who takes in step-siblings Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper (Sora Wong), who are grieving after the death of their father.
Jonah Wren Phillips also stars, playing Olly, a selectively mute little boy who is also under Laura's care, who Andy labels a 'freak' straight off the bat – and to be frank, the analysis isn't inaccurate as the child's behaviour becomes increasingly creepy.
'Casting is everything,' says Danny when discussing the incredible talent of the young actors.
'Each actor had their sort of thing; it was such a specific ask. So with Piper, we knew we wanted to authentically cast a vision-impaired person. So that was really important to her casting.'
Piper's lack of vision is a key plot point and expertly portrayed by Sora Wong, a young actress who had never before appeared in a film.
'Letting the young actors know that there's no such thing as a bad take. Like, you can't let anyone down. This is a really safe space. I don't even know what I'm doing. I don't know what I'm doing here! It's like, let's all find the film together,' says Danny.
The directors admit that they had zero belief that the megastar Sally Hawkins was ever going to actually appear in their film.
'We reached out to her first and approached her first with the expectation that she'd say no, but when they reached back and they're like, 'Sally, loved the script,' our minds were blown. And she's such a beautiful human and such an incredible performer and a generous collaborator. She was the best.'
They added that her performances were so powerful that she was even a little frightening on set.
'There were two or three scenes, and we were scared to approach her because she was so in the headspace, she was in a really frenzied state. That's how powerful she is. She's f**king awesome.'
When it comes to scary moments, Michael shares that rain, which features heavily as a motif in the film, caused a lot of on-set chaos.
'There are some big tracking shots, stuff that goes from inside to outside in the rain, and rain is such a difficult thing to shoot with, because, with makeup, as soon as you start, it starts raining. That all washes off. Costumes get wet. Sound is hard to use, and there are so many things that have to go right.
'You're kind of holding your breath a little bit in those moments, like, 'please just let us get away with it in this moment.' Actually, I'll say the scariest thing was when we were shooting with real rain, with real rain machines and stuff. We were filming a scene, and I looked down and water was coming under the front door, like it, like, flooded the house almost. So that was a bit scary.'
The directors are both quick to emphasise that with only one other film under their belts, they are still novices.
'It's so interesting, because every film or project that you do, it always feels like you're starting from scratch, and you forget everything a little bit, and it always feels like you're drowning. So even with the next movie, and having these two, I'll still not feel like I know what I'm doing. That's the honest answer,' said Danny.
When it comes to looking forward at future projects, it seems prudent to ask if they have any plans to draw on their experiences as twins – a sibling relationship that frequently appears in horror movies – but rarely from twin directors with the real-life credentials themselves. More Trending
'Oh my gosh, yeah, potentially down the line,' says Danny.
'I think you write stuff that scares you, not annoys you. You just annoy me,' Michael adds jokingly to his brother.
Danny adds: 'I feel like there would be no beautiful relationship between the siblings if they were twins. They'd hate each other, but maybe one day we'll bring that to screen!'
Bring Her Back hits UK cinemas on Saturday, July 2 6.

Coronation Street star confirms 'messy and heated' future for Danielle
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Hell hath no fury like that of a woman scorned as Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) finds out next week when he's left reeling after learning of his wife Danielle's (Natalie Anderson) new relationship… After a painful restorative justice session off the back of lamping conversion therapy preacher, Noah Hedley (Richard Winsor), Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) finds himself becoming privy to some particularly juicy information regarding his boyfriend Theo's wife, Danielle, learning that she is now in a relationship with the wicked preacher… When asked if her character's new relationship meant she'd put her marriage to Theo in the rear-view mirror, Natalie told us: 'Honestly, I don't think she's there. 'I've had this conversation with James, who plays Theo. It's such a rushed relationship, she had the fling with Jason then this is another big thing.' 'There's two things going on. One is trying to show Theo what he's missing with his family life, this is what he's throwing away. 'And there might be an element of her trying to fill the void, Danielle and Theo were married for 19 years, that's a huge amount of time. I've been with my husband 20 years and can't even imagine him not being around. It's a little bit of a rebound.' '[Noah and Danielle] have known of each other and grown up together through the faith with Theo. She has a line about the history between Noah and Theo and says it was their business, she believes Noah was just trying to do right by him. 'They've all come through the church upbringing together. felt for her like a natural person to fill the void of Theo. But also its probably quite pointed, of all the people she could've dated its someone who made his life quite uncomfortable as he was part of Theo's conversion therapy.' As Theo, Danielle and their kids come together at the Bistro, Todd is quick to spill the tea regarding what he's learned…leading to another violent altercation for the fractured family, with Theo accidentally striking his son, Miles (Lewis William Magee). Does Natalie think that Danielle would've revealed the news off of her own back? She says: 'Yes from a perspective of co-parenting she was planning on telling him, and was probably waiting to manage her own feelings first – before Todd steals her thunder and throws her under the bus!' On the Bistro confrontation, Natalie says: 'It all gets a little bit heated, Miles in particular is very upset with Todd, he goes for him and Theo tries to stop him. In the melee this incident happens where Miles ends up with a bloody nose. For Danielle, Todd is at the root of all of this – whether it was an accident or not, Todd has spoilt this and is the thorn in their side.' Todd seeks advice from his ex Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank), who calls round and sees bedding on the sofa and implores him to speak with Danielle, who's since banned Theo from seeing his kids… On how that particular conversation goes? Natalie teases: 'Her kids are her life she'll do anything to protect them. 'When Todd reaches out, she does want to take that seriously, until Todd starts being Todd and tries to manipulate the situation and throws his little daggers in there! She's not having any of it and has to go back to the drawing board. Playing those scenes was brilliant.' When Natalie was asked what's to come for Danielle, she said: 'As you can imagine it does get messier and more heated. We fall into two camps between Danielle and Theo, and the children will be caught in the middle of that. It is difficult, and representative of a lot of families going through messy divorces. 'That's been amazing to play and its not something I've done before, there's a lot of figuring out what's next and figuring out what's best for the children. How do we feel about Danielle so far? 'When it starts to become a legal thing, how nasty does that get? It's one thing trying to sort it out between yourselves, but when it gets to that next level things becomes more weaponised. There are some calculating things coming up, I'm not sure the audience will still be on Danielle's side after that!' More Trending On her own journey to the heralded cobbles, Natalie describes her excitement and delight at joining the nations most famous street. '…being in the Grimshaw's with Sue Cleaver and Ryan Thomas, oh my god I'm in Coronation Street with Eileen telling Jason off! I almost forgot I was in the scene I was just watching their spat! I was meant to have left and just stood there in the doorway watching it. Amazing. My first scene in Roy's Rolls with David Neilson was incredible. Getting to shout my head off in the Rovers at Tina O'Brien was another highlight, that was proper!' Coronation Street favourite rushed to hospital during cast-packed wedding
You can't have a soap wedding without some kind of hiccup or obstacle – and Coronation Street are going all out to hit Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) and Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) with disaster on the big day – with the bride rushed to hospital after a collapse. Even before this calamitous end to the very glam and colourful ceremony, there are shenanigans aplenty. The week starts with the stag and hen parties. Having saved money buying cheap suits for Dev and Aadi, Bernie is having a low key hen do in the bistro when word reaches them that the boys have hired a pole dancer at the Rovers. A furious Bernie storms into the Rovers to find the stags cheering on the pole dancer, but is all as it seems? As the big day dawns on Wednesday (August 6th), Dev and Bernie's dream wedding goes from bad to worse when the quads fall ill and have to watch with Joseph on live stream. Meanwhile, Bernie forgets her lucky charm locket containing the photo of Paul and when she runs home to get it she disturbs a burglar. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Back at the Bistro, the guests are entertained by a song from Debbie Webster who suddenly surprises Ronnie with a proposal. If Dev and Bernie's wedding falls apart, at least we might have another to look forward to. After such an eventful start to the day the guests take their seats for the main event and a glowing Bernie walks down the aisle towards Dev to make their vows. With the service about to start, Dev and Bernie share loving looks, but suddenly Bernie struggles to breathe and collapses in front of a shocked Dev. Is the dramatic day about to end in tragedy or will Bernie and Dev tie the knot? 'The day goes from bad to worse!' actress Jane exclaimed. 'That's what is so brilliant about Coronation Street, you don't know what you're going to get until you open the page of the script and that's what is so fantastic about how it plays out – we've got this woman raving down the aisle and the next minute she's collapsed and an ambulance is on its way!' More Trending Jane also revealed that she had a hand in the design of Bernie's unconventional wedding dress. She added: 'I knew that Bernie wouldn't go down the road of wearing a traditional dress. I had seen some old footage of Elkie Brookes on TV and she was wearing a kaftan. 'I am a big fan of Elkie so that was the initial inspiration, but this is for Bernie so it needed to be a bit extra. Strictly star swaps ballroom for Hollywood with movie debut
Olympic champion and former Strictly Come Dancing star Nicola Adams has lined up her debut acting role in an upcoming Hollywood movie. Former professional boxer Nicola, 42, appeared on the 18th series of the BBC dance competition in 2020. She made history when partnered with professional dancer Katya Jones as the show's first-ever same-sex partnership. However, her Strictly dreams were cut abruptly short when they were forced to withdraw during the fourth week of the competition, after Katya tested positive for Covid-19. The two-time Olympic champ will now pursue another dream—turning her hand to acting in an upcoming movie. Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. Nicola will star alongside Poppy Delevigne, Jack Kesy, and Bruce Willis's daughter, Rumer, in the allegorical thriller The Gun on Second Street. Talking about her career move, Nicola told The Sun: 'I just want to work with people that are just as hungry as I am. 'I'm not one of those people that just show up and just expect everything to be fine. 'I put in the work, I put in the graft, just as I do as an athlete as well. I want to take it as far as I can in terms of how I grow as an actor, being able to experience different types of roles, playing different characters that really flex my abilities and my ability to be able to dig deep on the emotions that are needed for the more dark characters.' Written and directed by Rohit Karn Batra, its story follows two police officers who are called to a domestic violence dispute on the titular Second Street in Philadelphia. The call-out goes awry when one officer accidentally shoots and kills the other. The film is described as an allegory about the gun crisis in America. At present, Nicola is listed on IMDB, although her character has not been named. Nicola rose to fame during the Olympics in 2012, becoming the first female boxer to win Olympic Gold for Britain. She went on to successfully defend her title at Rio 2016, before winning the title of WBO (World Boxing Organisation) flyweight in 2019. The athlete was forced into an early retirement that same year due to a serious eye injury, having only fought six times as a pro. She returned to the spotlight the very next year as a Strictly hopeful and has since expressed how much she'd love to return as a contestant due to 'unfinished business' after her premature departure. Of her decision to retire, Nicola said in 2019: 'I'm immensely honoured to have represented our country—to win double Olympic gold medals and then the WBO championship belt is a dream come true. 'But it's not without taking its toll on my body, and aside from the expected aches and pains, I've been advised that any further impact to my eye would most likely lead to irreparable damage and permanent vision loss. 'Boxing has always been such an important part of my life—and it always will—but after training every day for over 20 years, my body is quite looking forward to a rest!' More recently, Nicola is reported to have split from her partner of seven years, Ella Baig. The boxer began dating the OnlyFans model, 27, after they met on a night out in 2018. More Trending Now, the couple share two-year-old son, Taylor Nate, who was born via IVF using one of Nicola's eggs. A spokesperson told The Sun in March: 'Nicola and Ella have shared an incredible journey together, full of love, growth, and resilience. 'After much thoughtful reflection and important therapy work, they have made the difficult decision to separate. View More » 'Their priority remains their son, Taylor, and they are committed to co-parenting with love and respect.' Got a story?
