Modi likely to meet Trump at UN General Assembly in US

The Sun5 days ago
NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to meet President Donald Trump during a visit to the United States next month to attend the UN General Assembly meeting, the Indian Express newspaper reported on Wednesday, citing sources.
India's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. An Indian official familiar with the matter said a decision has not yet been taken, and that countries usually reserve slots for the General Debate at the assembly, which is why India's 'head of government' features in a provisional list of speakers on September 26.
'The list will go through revisions,' the official said, adding that it had not yet been decided if Modi would be going to the assembly. The General Assembly kicks off on September 9, but the debate, the annual meeting of heads of state and government, will be held from September 23-29.
Although the reason for the potential visit will be to attend the UN meeting in New York, a key objective will be to hold talks with Trump and iron out trade and tariff issues that have led to some souring of ties between the two countries, the newspaper reported.
News of a possible Modi trip to the U.S. comes days after Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods to penalise New Delhi for continuing to buy Russian oil.
The penalty took the total levy on Indian goods exported to the U.S. to 50%, among the highest levied on any U.S. trading partner.
Trade talks between New Delhi and Washington collapsed after five rounds of negotiations over disagreement on opening India's vast farm and dairy sectors and stopping Russian oil purchases.
On Tuesday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said several large trade agreements were still waiting to be completed, including with Switzerland and India, but New Delhi had been 'a bit recalcitrant' in talks with Washington.
Bessent told Fox Business Network's 'Kudlow' he hoped the Trump administration could wrap up its trade negotiations by the end of October.
'That's aspirational, but I think we are in a good position,' he said, adding 'I think we can be, we will have agreed on substantial terms with all the substantial countries.' - Reuters

Alaskan man gifted new motorcycle by Putin during Trump summit

(Reuters) -A local man in Anchorage was given a new motorcycle by Russian President Vladimir Putin during last week's summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in the Alaskan city, according to a report published by Russian state television. An employee of the Russian embassy in the United States handed the man, Mark Warren, the keys to his new Ural motorcycle in the parking lot of the Anchorage hotel where the Russian delegation was staying. "I have to say that this is a personal gift from the President of the Russian Federation," Andrei Ledenev, the embassy employee, told Warren. The white-haired, bespectacled Warren, who Reuters was unable to contact for comment, was shown hopping aboard his new bike, Ledenev behind him and another man in the sidecar, to take it for a spin. "It's night and day," Warren said. "I like my old one, but this one is obviously much better." "I'm speechless, it's amazing. Thank you very much." The unexpected gift by the Russian leader came after reporters with Russian state television Channel 1 met Warren by chance on the streets of Anchorage ahead of the summit. The reporters stopped to admire Warren's bike, which is manufactured by Ural, whose original factory was founded in 1941 in what was then Soviet Russia. Warren told a reporter, Valentin Bogdanov, that he struggled to obtain spare parts for the bike, including a new starter, because the manufacturing plant is "located in Ukraine." "So for you, if they resolve this conflict here in Alaska, I mean Putin and Trump, it will be good?" Bogdanov asks Warren. "Yes, it will be good," the Alaskan replies. Ural, which is headquartered in Washington State, says that all of its motorcycles are assembled in Kazakhstan. The company pulled all its production out of Russia after the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine. Ural did not immediately reply to a request for comment outside working hours in the U.S. (Reporting by Lucy Papachristou, Editing by William Maclean)

Oil prices rise on US adviser comments on India buying Russian crude

LONDON: Oil prices rose on Monday after White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said India's purchases of Russian crude were funding Moscow's war in Ukraine and had to stop. Traders were also watching for clues from a meeting later in the day between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as they attempt to come to a peace deal to end Europe's deadliest war in 80 years. Brent crude futures rose 0.46% or 30 cents to $66.15 a barrel by 1005 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was up 38 cents, or 0.61%, to $63.18 a barrel. White House trade adviser Peter Navarro's comments around India's purchases of Russian crude funding Moscow's war in Ukraine revived concerns about supply flows. 'India acts as a global clearinghouse for Russian oil, converting embargoed crude into high-value exports while giving Moscow the dollars it needs,' Navarro said. The statement had triggered some buying interest in the market, SEB analyst Ole Hvalbye said. 'The U.S. adviser's sharp words on India's Russian crude imports, paired with postponed trade talks, revive concerns that energy flows remain hostage to trade and diplomatic frictions, even as peace prospects in Ukraine brighten,' said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at brokerage Phillip Nova. Later in the day, Trump will meet first with Zelenskiy at 1715 GMT and then with all the European leaders at 1900 GMT. Trump told Ukraine on Monday to give up hopes of getting back annexed Crimea or joining NATO, as he emerged more aligned with Moscow on seeking a peace deal instead of a ceasefire first after his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. 'I don't believe the oil market has priced in a full peace dividend that potentially could see prices of crude and EU gas suffer further setbacks,' said Saxo Bank's head of commodity strategy, Ole Hansen. Speculators in the week to August 12 held the first-ever combined net short position in WTI (CME & ICE), leaving prices exposed to any upside surprises, Hansen added. Investors are also watching for clues from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's comments at this week's Jackson Hole meeting regarding the path of U.S. interest rate cuts that could boost stocks to further records - REUTERS

19 High-impact Programmes For Indian Community This Year, Says Ramanan

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- A total of 19 high-impact programmes across three core areas under the Socioeconomic Development Programme for the Indian Community (PPSMI) have been planned with an allocation of RM22.27 million for this year, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, who is also responsible for addressing issues related to the Indian community and the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA), said the three focus areas for community development include education and training, spirituality and culture as well as social well-being. In this regard, he urged parties not to play up sentiments inside or outside the House and on social media by claiming that the Indian community is being neglected by the Prime Minister and the MADANI Government. 'It is evident that the MADANI government today has done more to protect and safeguard the welfare of the Indian community compared to previous administrations,' Ramanan said when winding up the debate on the motion of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat today. Ramanan also dismissed claims that MITRA had failed to utilise its allocations for 2023 and 2024, stressing that the agency had spent 100 per cent of its funds in 2023 and 99 per cent in 2024. He said in 2023, MITRA fully utilised RM100 million across 221 initiatives benefiting 134,510 members of the Indian community, while in 2024, RM98.9 million was spent on 13 programmes, benefiting 122,082 individuals across different age groups. 'Each year, MITRA is allocated RM100 million to implement PPSMI. Its implementation is intervention-based, focusing on entrepreneurship and careers, education and training, spirituality and culture and social well-being,' he said. He stressed that coordination was necessary to prevent overlap and duplication of resources, particularly in areas such as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which fall under the jurisdiction and management of the National TVET Council. On the 13MP, Ramanan said the document outlined measures to uplift the socioeconomic status of the Indian community through initiatives and programmes based on the Malaysian Indian Blueprint and the Indian Community Action Plan.
