NEP 2020 has taken steps to stop commercialisation of education: Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan

NEW DELHI: Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday informed the Lok Sabha that multiple mechanisms with checks and balances have been provided in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to stop the commercialisation of education.
He was responding to a starred question by MP Arminder Singh Raja as to whether any survey had been done regarding the surging tuition fee in public and private universities and if any guidelines had been put in place to regulate cost of online and hybrid degree programmes under NEP 2020. Raja also wanted details about Central scholarships granted to students from economically weaker sections.
Pradhan said NEP 2020 emphasises online and offline public disclosure and transparency for both public and private schools. "NEP proposes similar standards of audit and disclosure as a 'not-for- profit' entity to all the education institutions. Surplus, if any, will be reinvested in the educational sector. Similarly, in higher education, all HEIs- public and private- shall be treated at par observing common guidelines."
The Universities are autonomous bodies which are governed by their respective Acts or statues. Based on the type of universities, the criteria for fee structure is administered, he said. In respect of IITs/ IIITs / NITs/IIEST/ IIMs etc, the fee structure is regulated as per the provision of the respective Acts/ Statutes, Pradhan pointed out.

MP Kesineni Sivanath urges Railway Board to expedite projects in Vijayawada Division

MP Kesineni Sivanath has appealed to Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar to take immediate steps to resolve pressing issues in the Vijayawada Railway Division and ensure the swift release of funds for the development of the city railway station under the Amrit Bharat Station 2.0 scheme. In a meeting held at Rail Bhavan in New Delhi on Tuesday (July 22, 2025), the MP raised several pending issues concerning infrastructure and public safety across the Vijayawada division. He drew attention to the long-pending construction of Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs) at key level crossings. These include Level Crossing No. 316 between Vijayawada and Gunadala, No. 147 between Rayanapadu and Kondapalli, No. 148 between Vijayawada and Rayanapadu, and No. 8 between Vijayawada and Ramavarappadu. He urged the Railway Board to take urgent steps to complete these works without delay. Highlighting the importance of modernising Vijayawada railway station, the MP called for the immediate release of ₹836.47 crore sanctioned by NITI Aayog under the Amrit Bharat Station 2.0 scheme. He stressed that the timely release of these funds by the Railway Ministry is essential for accelerating the development works. Mr. Satish Kumar assured that necessary directions would be issued to officials concerned. Meanwhile, the MP has urged the Central government to reconsider the allocation of PM-SHRI (Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India) schools to NTR District, citing severe underrepresentation in the recently approved list. Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, the MP called for a review of the selection process and demanded the sanctioning of more schools to the district. Despite the District having 827 benchmarked schools, and 550 of them meeting the eligibility criteria, only 27 schools were sanctioned under the PM-SHRI scheme, he pointed out. The sanction rate is 4.9%, the lowest across Andhra Pradesh, he added. 'The Andhra Pradesh government had recommended 62 schools for consideration, yet more than 56% of those schools did not make it to the final list. It is disappointing and unjustified,' he said. Highlighting the preparedness of the district, the MP said that most schools in NTR District are aligned with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and have the necessary infrastructure. 'Given this, the low number of sanctioned schools is both puzzling and disheartening,' he said. The MP called upon the Centre to review the selection process and allocate additional PM-SHRI schools to NTR District, said a release.

BCCI Under RTI: Long-Stalled Sports Bill To Be Tabled Today, Likely To Clear Parliament

Last Updated: Despite not receiving government funding, the BCCI, like other national sports bodies, will have to comply with regulations set out by the sports ministry once the bill is enacted Union sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya is set to introduce the highly anticipated National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The legislation, focused on athlete welfare and systemic reform, represents a significant step towards transparency and accountability in Indian sports governance. A key provision of the bill is to bring all national sports bodies, including the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005. This long-debated and previously resisted move is expected to finally become law, ending years of delay and political pushback. A previous attempt during the UPA era by then sports minister Ajay Maken failed due to opposition within his own party. Despite not receiving government funding, the BCCI, like other national sports federations, will be required to comply with the regulations set out by the sports ministry once the bill is enacted. This is particularly significant as the Indian cricket team prepares to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, which will place the BCCI within the framework of a national sports federation. 'It wasn't easy to bring the BCCI on board, but extensive dialogue was held between lawmakers and the BCCI top brass to ensure their cooperation," a source involved in the legislative process told CNN-News18. 'The government's intent is clear: to instill accountability and transparency across all sports federations in the country." Once enacted, the bill will mandate all recognised sports bodies to comply with the RTI Act, opening up access to decision-making processes, financial records, and governance structures to the public. The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, aims to overhaul the Indian sports ecosystem through a series of structural reforms, including legal clarity, gender equality, athlete empowerment, and enhanced public oversight. More than just a legal framework, the bill signals the dawn of a new era where athletes are not just competitors but active stakeholders in India's sporting future. India's sports sector has long been plagued by controversies such as mismanagement, opaque elections in sports federations, and poor athlete representation. With over 350 court cases pending across federations, the judiciary has consistently urged the government to legislate a comprehensive governance structure. Efforts to introduce such a bill date back to 2011, but progress was repeatedly blocked by legal challenges, shifting political priorities, and unresolved court interventions. The Delhi High Court's endorsement of the 2011 Sports Code and pending litigations around the 2017 draft further stalled momentum. Officials believe that beyond governance reform, the bill will also contribute to employment generation, better protection for athletes—especially women and minors—and a more ethical, competitive, and globally aligned sporting culture in India. Cong, BJP spar as posters come up of arrested NSUI state chief with Rahul

Bhubaneswar: A day after National Students' Union of India's state president Udit Narayan Pradhan was arrested on charges of raping a 19-year-old student in the city, posters have surfaced throughout Bhubaneswar displaying images of the suspended Congress member alongside Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi. The giant posters have come up at prominent places including Janpath, sparking heated exchanges between the Congress and BJP . State Congress president Bhakta Charan Das accused the BJP of having orchestrated this poster campaign to defame the party. "We are certain about BJP's involvement in this negative poster campaign against the Congress. This indicates BJP's apprehension towards Congress, which has strengthened its protests regarding the reported rise in crimes against women," Das said. "BJP cannot stifle our voice. Women safety is our biggest focus. Our protest will be intensified in the coming days," he added even as another Congress member criticised the BMC for not pulling down such unauthorised posters. The Congress formed a six-member committee on Monday to investigate the allegations against Pradhan. The party indicated it would support strict action if the charges were proven true. Responding strongly to the allegations, BJP MLA Babu Singh said, "Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones at others. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 most beautiful women in the world Undo The arrest of Udit Pradhan has exposed the double standard of Congress on issues of women's safety." Avilash Panda, state president of BJP's youth wing, criticised Congress for appointing Pradhan as NSUI Odisha president. "Days before his appointment (Aug 2024), he was arrested in a criminal case in Bhubaneswar. Still, the Congress made him the NSUI state president," Panda said. Amid the BJP-Congress confrontation over Pradhan's arrest, BJD president and former chief minister Naveen Patnaik expressed concern over an alleged increase in crimes against women. "A disturbing wave of crimes against women is gripping Odisha. This surge in sexual assaults reflects a troubling erosion of law enforcement. When various ranks of the police face interference and political pressure, accountability weakens — and women and girls pay the price first," Naveen wrote in a social media post.
