Lindsay Lohan shocks interviewers with the one reason she left Hollywood and moved to Dubai: ‘It's not legal'
During an interview on Live with Kelly and Mark, Lohan was asked what it is like living in Dubai.
'It's just far away from Hollywood, and I live a very normal life,' she said.
She said that stricter privacy laws were the main factor drawing her to Dubai, where she enjoys a life far removed from the relentless attention she faced for most of her life.
'There's no worry of, like, I can't go eat at this place 'cause someone's gonna take a picture of my son,' she continued. 'And it's just, I feel very safe.'
Host Kelly Ripa was taken aback when Lohan detailed Dubai's strict photo laws. 'No, it's not legal,' Lohan said.
'You can't even take a picture of someone else if you're at a restaurant. You have to ask the person, which is a big difference from here.'
'What? That's incredible!' Ripa exclaimed.
Lohan stressed the importance of privacy. 'Yeah, privacy is key.'
The 39-year-old actress has been based in Dubai since 2014.
She married financier Bader Shammas in 2022, and the couple welcomed their son Luai in 2023.
Lohan has long struggled with the intense scrutiny of fame. In 2018, she told Paper magazine, 'I could do 99 things right and one thing wrong, but it's that one thing that will be focused on.'
'Behind the scenes, I do what I can to be the best version of me, which never gets mentioned,' she added. 'I am also human. I make mistakes. That's all that seems to get reported.'
Currently, Lohan is promoting Freakier Friday, the sequel to the 2003 hit Freaky Friday. She reunited with Jamie Lee Curtis for the film, out on August 8.
Lohan recently shared with
Page Six
a piece of advice she received from Curtis over 20 years ago.
'She said, 'How you show up on set is how the whole crew feels. You control the energy that goes on set, so always bring your best self,'' Lohan recalled.
'It's very full circle for me,' she said of returning for the sequel. 'And it was just a really exciting day when we were first there, all together.'

Lindsay Lohan: I was too much of a 'yes person'
Lindsay Lohan thinks she was too much of a "yes person" during her younger years. The 39-year-old actress endured a turbulent spell early in her career, when she was arrested a number of times, and Lindsay now looks back on her younger years with some regrets. She told The Sun newspaper: "I was always such a 'yes' person to my agents and everyone that no one ever really took the time to ask me, 'Do you wanna chill for a second?' "And if I knew then what I know now, I'd definitely have used the word 'no' a lot more." Lindsay has managed to turn her life around over the last decade, and she now has a two-year-old son called Luai with Bader Shammas, her husband. The Hollywood star thinks her younger self would actually feel "very proud of the mother and wife" she's become. Lindsay - who now lives in Dubai with her family - said: "I love it so much. I'm obsessed with my kid. "The other day I said, 'Luai, don't do that — not a good idea', and now he goes, 'Luai, don't do that ... ' He mocks me. "If my husband's like, 'No, Luai', then he listens. But for me, it's like he laughs at me. But I'm fine with it. I love every second." Lindsay recently revealed that she lives "a very normal life" in Dubai. The movie star relishes the relative anonymity that she's afforded in the city, admitting that it's very different from Hollywood. Lindsay - who moved to Dubai back in 2014 - said on Live with Kelly and Mark: "It's just far away from Hollywood, and I live a very normal life. "There's no worry of like, I can't go eat at this place 'cause someone's gonna take a picture of my son. And it's just ... I feel very safe." Lindsay loves that her family can enjoy quality time together without being bothered. The Freakier Friday star said: "You can't take a picture of someone else if you're in a restaurant. You have to ask the person, which is a big difference from here."

Lindsay Lohan felt pigeonholed
Lindsay Lohan believes she was "pigeonholed" as an actress. The Freakier Friday star - who took a nine-year break from making movies after 2013's The Canyons - still finds it "frustrating" that she has to "fight" for grittier projects because she grew up in the public eye and was best known for teen comedies in her younger years. Asked if she felt pigeonholed, she told The Times newspaper: 'Yeah, I do. I was so thrilled to work on A Prairie Home Companion, and yet even today I have to fight for stuff that is like that, which is frustrating. "Because, well, you know me as this — but you also know I can do that. So let me! Give me the chance. I have to break that cycle and open doors to something else, leaving people no choice. And in due time, if Martin Scorsese reaches out, I'm not going to say no.' However, the 39-year-old star doesn't want to "press too many boundaries" with edgy roles as she doesn't want to alienate her fanbase. She said: "I'm never looking to do something that presses too many boundaries. I tried that when I was younger, I didn't love it. "I don't want to do something that will cut my whole fan base off, the people who have been with me for so long, who will love Freakier Friday. I want to respect the people who have kept me here... 'I think that way because my life was so public at such a young age — out there for people to see and interpret for themselves — and so I'm always thinking what the public perception of me is. Whether it's a role or a colour I wear, I always think what the perception will be — that's important to me.' Lindsay - who has two-year-old son Luai with husband Bader Shammas - retreated from her career for so long because she had lost the "excitement" of working on a movie set. She explained: 'I wanted to take a minute. 'I was losing that feeling of excitement about doing a film, and I wanted to live my own life for a bit, figure out how to have a more private life, a real life. I wanted to wait to get that itch again.'

Lindsay Lohan hopes Freakier Friday helps people forget
Lindsay Lohan hopes Freakier Friday helps cinemagoers to "forget about what's going on" in the world. The 39-year-old actress has reunited with Jamie Lee Curtis for the new fantasy-comedy film, which is a sequel to 2003's Freaky Friday, and Lohan hopes the movie will help to lift spirits. Lohan - who starred alongside Jamie in the original film - told the BBC of her hopes for the sequel. "Fans love the movie and there's such a strong loyalty. It made people so happy and I like to make movies that make people feel joy," she said. "There's so much going on in the world now that it's nice to make something that allows people to forget about what's going on." Curtis recently admitted she developed a close bond with Lohan after they starred together in Freaky Friday more than two decades ago. "I felt tremendous maternal care for Lindsay after the first movie and continued to feel that," she told the Guardian newspaper. "She and I have remained friends and now we're sort of colleagues. I feel less maternal towards her because she's a mommy now herself and doesn't need my maternal care, and has, obviously, a mom – Dina's a terrific grandma." Curtis insists that Lohan doesn't need any life advice from her. "I'm bossy, very bossy, but I try to mind my own business. She doesn't need my advice. She's a fully functioning, smart woman, creative person. Privately, she's asked me questions, but nothing that's more than an older friend you might ask," she said. Lohan has been through lots of high-profile ups and downs in her life, but she recently claimed that she's now "wiser" and more "settled" than ever before. "I'm at ease in my life because I've lived, I feel like, such a long life at such a young age. I feel wiser now and very settled. I've become such a positive person," she told People.
