Centre defers May 4 meeting with farmers over participation of Punjab Government

The Hindu02-05-2025

The Centre on Thursday (May 1, 2025) deferred the proposed May 4 meeting with farmer leaders in Chandigarh, urging them to allow Punjab Government officials to participate.
Union Agriculture Ministry's joint secretary Puran Chandra Kishan wrote to the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) in this regard.
The communication came days after farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal said that they would be forced to boycott the talks if Punjab government representatives were invited.
He claimed the farming community harboured deep resentment against the Punjab government over the eviction of protesting farmers from Shambhu and Khanauri border points in March.
The SKM (Non-Political) and KMM on April 27 wrote a letter to Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, urging the Centre not to include representatives of the Punjab government in the proposed meeting.
In Thursday's (May 1, 2025) letter, joint secretary Kishan said, 'As you know, State Governments have an important role in the federal structure. Therefore, it would be appropriate to include the state government in the meeting. You are requested to reconsider the above decision, so that we can move forward towards a solution through dialogue'.
'Therefore, it is requested that after positive deliberation, you give your consent for the meeting with the participation of the state. The meeting of 4 May is postponed till we get your consent. The date of the next meeting will be decided after receiving information from you,' stated the letter, which was released by the farmers.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, when asked about the farmers' demand, said none of the Ministers or officials will join the talks this time.
'Your (farmers') demands concern the Centre. You hold talks directly with it. We do not have any problem,' said Mr. Mann.
On March 19, Punjab Police had cracked down on agitating farmers, detaining their leaders in Mohali when they were returning from a meeting with a central delegation led by Agriculture Minister Chouhan in Chandigarh.

The farmer leaders and some other farmers who were detained were released in subsequent days.
The March 19 meeting was organised to discuss the farmers' demands, including the Minimum Support Price (MSP) guarantee.
Punjab Police had last month evicted farmers and dismantled temporary structures from the Shambhu and Khanauri border points where the sit-ins were being held by them for over a year.

Himachal CM directs completion of Shongtong-Karcham hydroelectric project by November 2026

Chief minister (CM) Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday inspected the ongoing development works at the Shongtong-Karcham hydroelectric project site in Kinnaur district. He inspected the power house site at Karcham and visited the barrage site Powari of the project. He also interacted with the engineers and workers of the project. The CM directed them to complete this 450 MW capacity hydroelectric project in a time bound manner by November 2026. He said that after the commissioning of this project, the state would earn annual revenue of about ₹1000 crore. He said that this project was under construction for the last 13 years, but the present state government accelerated its construction and it would be dedicated to the nation in the stipulated time period. He added that the present government was taking concrete steps to ensure proper exploitation of its river water, to strengthen the economy of the state. Sukhu said the state government was working to take over the Dhaulasidh, Luhri and Sunni hydro power projects and the total amount spent on these projects so far was being evaluated. Henceforth, the state government would take forward the construction work of hydropower projects on its own terms so that the interests of the state could be protected, which were completely sidelined by the previous BJP government. The CM said that the state government was also moving ahead towards setting up a geo-thermal power project at Tapri in Kinnaur district and making advancement in the field of electricity by producing solar and green hydrogen energy. CM distributes land ownership certificates Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu distributed Land Ownership Certificates to 25 beneficiaries of Kalpa block under the Forest Rights Act, 2006, which were pending since last many years. The CM said that under the Forest Rights Act, 2006, land leases have already been allotted to 460 individuals across the state. He also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for various development projects worth ₹48 crore in the Kinnaur assembly constituency. Criticising the previous government, CM Sukhu alleged that public funds were misused, which should have instead been spent on the welfare of the farmers, horticulturists. He added that large plots of land were handed over to big industrialists at throwaway prices and huge subsidies were given in electricity. The Una Bulk Drug Park project, for which ₹50 crore was allocated by the Centre, was returned, as the state government will now take up its work on its own to safeguard state interests, he stated. He said that the BJP government received liberal grants of about ₹68,000 crore from the Centre in form of GST compensation and revenue deficit grants but 'instead of repaying the debts and clearing the liabilities, it utilised the funds on freebies'.

BJP's ‘11-Year Report Card': Cong flags rising hunger, inequality

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday released a booklet to mark Narendra Modi's 11 years at the Centre, highlighting stagnated growth rate, rising hunger, and his "unfulfilled promises". Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh in a post on X said that the booklet, '11 Saal, Jhoothe Vikaas ke vade', commemorates "some of the biggest lies of this government." Addressing a press conference, AICC research department head Rajeev Gowda, who prepared the booklet, alleged, "This government is very good at fake news and propaganda. It is our job as the Opposition to get people to know this grim reality." He said that to expose the BJP's on its promises the party was releasing two sets of documents. The booklet, 'Ek Aur Baar Jumla Sarkar', he said, looks at the promises made by the BJP in its 2024 manifesto, and has since made. The other one, he said, is '11 Saal Jhoote Vikaas Ke Vaade', which is a "detailed exposé" of the "hollow promises" of the BJP.

‘Goonda governance': BJP slams Congress over crackdown on Hindu leaders

Mangaluru: Escalating its criticism of the Congress-led Karnataka government, BJP state president B Y Vijayendra on Monday launched a fierce attack on what he termed the 'goonda behaviour' of the administration, alleging a state-sponsored campaign to target Hindu leaders following the murder of Bajpe-based activist Suhas Shetty. Addressing reporters at the BJP district office, Vijayendra alleged that the police, instead of nabbing the culprits, were raiding homes of Hindu activists in midnight crackdowns. 'We are seeing a collapse of governance—law and order has become a tool of political vendetta,' he said. The BJP chief accused the government of selectively protecting Congress leaders while unleashing legal action on Hindu voices. 'When Hindu leaders speak up, cases are filed. But when Congress members like Ivan D'Souza speak against the Prime Minister and Governor, there is no action,' he claimed. Vijayendra welcomed the Centre's decision to hand over the Shetty case to the NIA, asserting that the state government showed little interest earlier in facilitating an impartial probe. He also questioned the intent behind the state's anti-communal task force, calling it a 'mechanism to instil fear among BJP loyalists.' Echoing similar concerns, Leader of Opposition R Ashoka said, 'Police stations in Karnataka have started resembling Congress party offices. There's no differentiation between patriots and anti-nationals in the way law is being applied.' Ashoka also responded to questions over Suhas Shetty's alleged rowdy history, remarking that even prominent political leaders have faced legal cases. 'Let the court decide what is criminal and what isn't,' he said, while urging an unbiased probe into other recent violent incidents including the murder of Rehman. The BJP's southern leadership, including D V Sadananda Gowda, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, MP of Dakshina Kannada Capt. Brijesh Chowta and several MLAs, stood in support of what they described as a growing atmosphere of political suppression in coastal Karnataka—an area long considered a BJP bastion.
