Meghan and Harry's eye-watering bills laid bare in new show as 'income dries up'
Meghan and Harry: Where Did The Money Go? is set to delve into the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's finances since quitting The Firm.
Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle are set to see their incomes dwindle and costs soar as their multi-million pound deals dry up, experts have said.
After they decided to quit the Royal Family back in 2020, Harry's father, King Charles removed all financial support from them as they relocated to America. After this, Harry told Oprah Winfrey during that explosive interview that his dad "literally cut me off financially" .
Now a new Channel 5 programme called Meghan and Harry: Where Did The Money Go? is set to shine a light on their finances revealing Harry's surprising inheritances, Meghan's millions and their staggering Montecito mortgage.
The documentary also delves into the multi-million pound deals the couple have cut to sell their story since leaving The Firm - but it also details their huge outgoings, according to The Mirror.
Royal expert Norman Baker tells the show: 'There's no doubt in my mind that Meghan and Harry's income is going to decline in the future. It's declining now. They've done the big hits that they could do. They've done the big Spotify event, they've done the big book, there is nothing else to come, nothing else to sell apart from themselves.'
After they moved their lives over to the US, the couple bought a lavish family home costing $14.65 million (£11m). However, they also took out a mortgage of $9.5m (£7m), with repayments in the region of $50,000-100,000 (£73,000 - £37,000) a month. Until now, it's been unheard of for a senior Royal to require a mortgage.
Prince Harry has also been forced to fund his own security, and he rarely travels anywhere public without a four-car convoy.
Former royal protection officer Simon Morgan explains the costs of specialist protection, saying: 'It's always very difficult to identify the cost in relation to specialist protection, purely because there's a lot of other factors that go into it. You are looking at somewhere in the region of about £3 million a year to protect somebody who stays at home. As soon as they leave the residence, even if they go down to the shops, that could see that cost double or triple and go from £3m to £6m or £9m or £10m, conservatively. Security is not a fashion accessory, it's a need. You've got to address your needs versus your wants.'
In order to fund it, Harry and Meghan famously signed a £100 million five year deal with Netflix in 2020 and a £15 million deal with Spotify. The Spotify deal has since come to an end with a top exec at the firm dubbing the pair 'grifters', while the Netflix deal is due to end this year, with no renewal planned.
Before they left their royal roles, which was famously branded 'Megxit', the Sussexes were earning £2.3m a year as working Royals, receiving money from the then Prince Charles's Duchy of Cornwall.
But when they departed The Firm that all stopped, leaving Harry forced to live on the inheritance his mum Diana, Princess of Wales left him in her will.
When she sadly passed away in a car accident in 1997, Diana left £6.5m to each of her two sons, which had grown to around £10m when Harry received it upon turning 30.
In his interview with Oprah, Harry said 'Without that, we wouldn't have been able to do this," referring to the family's move to California. Meghan, meanwhile, was thought to be worth around £5million when she met Harry - money built up from her time as an actress on Suits and from her lifestyle brand.
His tell all book Spare earned Harry a $20m (£15m) advance and sold an incredible 3.2 million copies in its first week. He's expected to have received a further £7m from the hardback sales.
Now PR expert Nick Ede is backing Meghan to become the family's breadwinner. He says, 'Meghan is the best way of making money for the two of them. She is the breadwinner.'
Nick believes that having to build her own fortune before she met Harry means she's more savvy with deals than her Royal husband.
Nick continues: 'Megan from an early age knew it was very important to be secure. If you're a jobbing actress that means you don't know literally where the next pay cheque will come from and I think that will have added to her drive.'
Indeed, Meghan might be more savvy with money but Harry has just come into another inheritance - this time from his great-grandmother, Elizabeth, Queen Mother.
In 1994 the Queen Mother set up a Trust Fund to benefit her great-grand children and this is expected to have paid out £8m to Harry.
It's a tidy sum but royal journalist Emily Andrews reckons Harry doesn't contribute much else to his household. She tells the documentary: 'Meghan gets up at half six, half an hour before the children, then the children gets up and she gets them dressed, gets their breakfast, and then she makes their packed lunch and takes them to kindy (nursery), then at 9 o'clock she sits down and is a girl boss… Where is Harry in all of this? He's not making money, he's not looking after the kids, what is Harry doing?'
Meghan & Harry: Where Did The Money Go? Airs on Saturday 14th June at 8.30pm on Channel 5.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry axe four key staff members after 'disaster move'
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, according to reports, have dismissed four major employees following a sequence of public relations missteps. It's claimed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have separated from LA-based deputy press secretary Kyle Boulia and UK press officer Charlie Gipson, both of whom joined their team in April 2024. Recent weeks have also seen two other members of Harry and Meghan's personal staff reportedly depart. These shifts follow Harry and Meghan's appointment of a new communications team earlier this year, overseen by chief communication officer Meredith Maines, who has confirmed her squad comprises eight people spread across five different time zones. READ MORE - Royal fans spot 'major change' for Prince Louis at Trooping the Colour READ MORE - Kate Middleton's 'firm' command to Prince Louis on palace balcony exposed Adding to their revamped communications armoury, Harry and Meghan have brought on Emily Robinson, the ex-publicity manager for The Crown during its controversial seasons three through six, as their director of communications. The sixth season of the acclaimed Netflix series included contentious representations, like Prince Harry in Nazi garb, Princess Diana's impactful Panorama interview, and even portrayed Diana in ghostly conversations with Queen Elizabeth II. An insider speaking to Hello! Magazine hinted at further potential upheavals, saying: "Something tells me there will be another change in the future. Meghan and Harry have hired some of the most incredible people at the top of their fields, yet somehow none of them ever work out.", reports the Mirror. The couple, who renounced senior Royal duties in 2020 and relocated to California with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, seem to be navigating choppy staffing waters. Following alterations within the Sussexes' team, their Chief Communications Officer Meredith shared a statement with The Mirror: "As the Duke and Duchess's business and philanthropic interests grow, I have made the strategic decision to move toward a more traditional communications structure of specialist agency support, as previously reported in Forbes and PR Week several weeks ago. Transitioning from a team of two to an agency support staff of eight, operating across five different time zones, will give international media and stakeholders better access, and critically, faster response times to inquiries." The Sussexes have recently caused a stir with some of their media appearances, including a controversial BBC interview given by Harry after his appeal against the downgrade of his UK security was rejected. In the interview, Harry alleged that his father, King Charles, is no longer speaking to him due to disagreements over his security arrangements while in the UK. (Image: Anadolu via Getty Images) (Image: Getty) He also brought up the King's cancer treatment and expressed uncertainty about "how much longer my father has left," which drew criticism for fuelling speculation about the monarch's health. Meghan Markle delighted fans by sharing a playful video where she's seen twerking with Prince Harry as part of her efforts to induce labour while she was pregnant with Lilibet. In the light-hearted Instagram clip, sprightly Meghan narrates over the minute-long footage saying: "Four years ago today, this also happened. Both of our children were a week past their due dates... so when spicy food, all that walking, and acupuncture didn't work – there was only one thing left to do!". Moreover, the Duchess has enjoyed success with her Netflix series, 'With Love, Meghan,' which, despite receiving a mix of critiques, proved popular enough to bag a second season on the streaming site. Adding to her ventures, Meghan has introduced her own brand, As Ever, offering a selection of homemade products such as raspberry jam, wildflower honey, herbal teas, flower sprinkles, crepe mix, and shortbread cookie mix. It was earlier mentioned that Meghan was poised to attend a charity gala in Los Angeles; however, the event is no longer going forward due to the unrest in the city. She was to be the guest of honour at the Museum of Natural History in LA, where she planned to speak about her extensive charitable activities. Amidst the ongoing protests in LA, with demonstrators clashing with ICE officers, the prestigious Night of Wonder event has been put on hold. Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, President and Director of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, commented: "As an institution 'of, for, and with Los Angeles,' our responsibility during challenging times is clear: to serve as a community resource focused on healing and unity, not celebration. "Los Angeles needs us to channel our energy toward supporting our neighbours and demonstrating the values that make our city and county strong," she added. The museum's Board of Trustees, leadership, and event partners collectively decided to indefinitely postpone the event, agreeing that it was "the appropriate response to current community circumstances." Paul Bessire, the museum's Chief Advancement Officer, remarked: "We will find a future moment to celebrate our work. Until then, we will channel our energy towards being welcoming spaces for learning and discovery for everyone who walks through our doors." The museum plans to reschedule the Night of Wonder for a future date and will maintain its regular operations and educational activities in the meantime.

Kate Middleton's 'firm' command to Prince Louis on balcony exposed by lip reader
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info During Trooping the Colour, as the royal family gathered on the Buckingham Palace balcony, Princess Kate appeared to give Prince Louis a clear yet subtle directive. Despite many onlookers eager for a glimpse of his renowned cheeky behaviour, Louis was impeccably behaved throughout the celebration of the King's birthday, under the watchful eyes of his siblings George and Charlotte. Lip reader Jeremy Freeman suggested that while Princess Kate generally relied on George and Charlotte to help monitor Louis, she did step in with a straightforward command. Post-Red Arrows flypast, as the Royals prepared to retire from their prominent balcony position, Freeman alleges Kate had to remind Louis to stand up straight for the national anthem. READ MORE - Royal fans spot 'major change' for Prince Louis at Trooping the Colour Freeman disclosed to The Mirror that Kate noticed a fidgety Louis towards the end of the event, telling her offspring: "National anthem. Louis, stand." Following this, Louis reportedly adjusted himself and paid full attention to the anthem performance. On the same note, it is said that King Charles and Prince William exchanged their impressions of the days' events, both showing admiration for the military procession and the Red Arrows' impressive display above, reports the Mirror. Freeman shared that at the end of the RAF display, William expressed to Charles: "Oh my word, what a day," with Charles responding with the words: "Great theatre." During a touching moment on the balcony, the Royal Family engaged in a light-hearted discussion about the planes seen during the flypast. Freeman recounted how Prince William was chatting with Princess Kate when King Charles interjected, asking: "What is that?" while pointing at an aircraft above them. Prince William then turned to his father, pondering aloud: "Errr is that Poseidon?" before Prince George chimed in, confirming: "It's a Poseidon, yeah." This anecdote was shared as part of the celebrations for King Charles' birthday, with the royals posting videos online highlighting the day's best moments. A clip from William and Kate showed William donning his military attire and getting on his horse for the parade, while Kate and the children took a carriage ride to the Mall. King Charles and Queen Camilla also shared a video montage on the official Royal Family social media channels, capturing scenes of the family boarding their carriages, the spectacular Red Arrows display, and even a moment of King Charles feeding a carrot to one of the horses involved in the procession. Accompanying the video, the King and Queen expressed their gratitude to the military staff for making the occasion "truly triumphant". This year's Trooping the Colour marks the third under King Charles' rule. This year, the King's Colour of Number 7 Company Coldstream Guards, also known as the sovereign's bodyguard and marking its 375th anniversary, is the regimental flag being trooped.

Kate and Charlotte share sweet mother-daughter moment in matching blue at Trooping the Colour
The Princess of Wales and Princess Charlotte shared a sweet moment during Trooping the Colour in London on Saturday, 14 June, to mark the King's official birthday. Accompanied by Prince George and Prince Louis, the mother and daughter smiled at one another as they rode together in a carriage. The appearance of the Prince and Princess of Wales' children sparked cheering from royal fans when they were spotted travelling down the Mall with their mother. Kate took her place next to the King and Queen on the dais to watch the spectacle, in her role as Colonel of the Irish Guards – a position she was unable to take up last year because she was receiving cancer treatment, and instead watched the ceremony with her children.
