Is it India's 78th or 79th Independence Day?
There is often confusion over whether 2025 marks the 78th or 79th Independence Day. Many people subtract 1947 (the year of independence) from 2025 and arrive at 78. This occurs because they start counting from zero or consider only anniversaries, not the first celebration itself.
The correct method, as per official records, is to count 15 August 1947 — the day India became independent — as the 1st Independence Day. Therefore, Independence Day 2025 will be the 79th celebration of India's freedom.

Chandigarh to be developed on lines of Gujarat's GIFT city: Kataria
City Beautiful will be developed as a National Service Industry Centre on the lines of Gujarat's GIFT city, UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria said in his Independence Day speech on Friday. Gulab Chand Kataria (HT Photo) GIFT City, short for Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, is a smart city, part of India's vision to attract fintech companies and global trading institutions, and compete with international financial hubs such as Dubai, Singapore, and London. In Chandigarh, the plan is to turn it into a model of sound economic regulations, efficient governance, and modern infrastructure. Kataria further said that the recent demolition drives against illegal colonies and markets had freed 55 acres, worth nearly ₹2,500 crore, which will now be used for public welfare projects. The administrator also announced that a 400-bed regional medical hub would be established in Sector-53 in collaboration with AIIMS and NITI Aayog. The facility will focus on maternal and child care, emergency services, health research, and rehabilitation. He also mentioned the expansion of rooftop solar projects, the floating solar plant at Sector-39, the launch of e-Sanjeevani tele-consultation, and the implementation of the MoRTH scheme for road accident victims. Speaking on other development projects, the administrator said that work on the ₹90-crore four-lane flyover from PGIMER to Sarangpur and Tribune flyover, which recently received approvals, will start soon. These projects will help ease the traffic troubles in the city.

SAD rebel faction seeks reopening of Kartarpur Corridor
1 2 Amritsar: On the occasion of India's 79th Independence Day, Harpreet Singh, president of the reorganised Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), invoked the painful legacy of Partition, calling it a "religious injustice" that continues to haunt Sikhs. Addressing a gathering, Harpreet Singh said Punjab and Bengal bore the brunt of India's freedom struggle, only to be brutally divided in 1947. "While Delhi celebrated, Punjab burned. The British departure unleashed a wave of hatred that claimed nearly a million lives. Children were butchered, and elders and women, unable to bear the horror, took their own lives," he said. He lamented that Sikhs were forced to abandon their sacred gurdwaras in Pakistan and resettle in Punjab in India. "We left behind our soul," he said, referring to revered shrines such as Sri Nankana Sahib, Gurdwara Panja Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib, Dera Sahib in Lahore, and Sacha Sauda. "Even today, Sikhs cannot freely visit these sites. The Kartarpur Corridor gave us hope, but it too became a victim of politics and diplomatic tensions. " Drawing a comparison, Harpreet Singh said, "Muslims can go for Hajj without visa denials or border restrictions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo But a Sikh must beg for a visa to bow before Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birthplace. This is religious injustice on a global scale." He also spoke of elderly Sikhs who died with unfulfilled dreams of revisiting their childhood homes across the border, and similarly, elders in Pakistan who longed to return to ancestral villages in India. "Those responsible for this pain will never find peace—not even after death. The souls of the 10 lakh martyrs will not rest until justice is done," he said. Appeal to reopen Kartarpur Corridor ahead of Jyoti Jot Diwas In a related statement, officiating Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj urged the central government to reopen the Kartarpur Corridor ahead of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Jyoti Jot Diwas. He recalled the horrors of 1947, when Punjab witnessed massacres and displacement. "Sikhs on the western side of Punjab lost their fertile lands and over 200 sacred gurdwaras, including Sri Nankana Sahib. This grief is embedded in our daily prayers," he said. The corridor, opened during the 550th Prakash Gurpurb of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, had enabled emotional reunions at Kartarpur Sahib. However, recent Indo-Pak tensions led to its closure. "With Jyoti Jot Diwas approaching, reopening the corridor would allow the sangat to pay homage at this sacred site. We urge the government to act swiftly," he said. NMRDA for 15-meter wide approach roads for develoment of properties in region
Nashik: Nashik Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (NMRDA) has now decided to permit approach roads with a width of not less than 15 metres for development of properties in the region. "Developers construct properties and move on, and then the people who live in those properties face problems due to narrow roads. In order to ensure proper development, we have decided on 15-metre norm," said NMRDA commissioner Manikrao Gursal. As per the Unified Development Control and Promotion Regulations 2020, properties are developed only on the basis of available width of road that helps dwellers access the nearest public way. The region is likely to see huge development during the forthcoming Simhastha Kumbhmela as well as overall development of places just outside Nashik Municipal Corporation limits. "We will have development of roads and properties considering the forthcoming Simhastha, besides handling movement of traffic from Ozar and even Shirdi international airports to and from Nashik city, all of which will be happen in NMRDA region spread across 275 villages in six talukas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? The current decision about the access roads is another step further," he said. Gursal said huge plots have been developed in neighbouring talukas of Nashik but their approach roads are very small, leading to problems for the residents as well as visitors. "Given the climatic conditions in Igatpuri, Nashik, and surrounding areas, there is demand for second homes, and so a large number of people — even the aged — visit these places. Traffic jams have now become regular issues on roads leading to chaotic conditions," said the officer. NMRDA has already announced widening of village roads from 15 to 18 metres, the other district roads (ODR) from 18 to 24 metres, and major district roads (MDR) from 24 to 30 metres.
