Ex-assistant coach ordered to serve prison sentence today
Judge Datuk Hassan Abdul Ghani made the ruling after dismissing an appeal by Mat Salleh Jalani, 62, to set aside the conviction and sentence handed down by the Sessions Court on May 16 last year.
"The court dismisses his appeal and upholds the sentence imposed by the Sessions Court," he said and ordered Mat Salleh to serve the prison sentence starting today.
On May 16 last year, the Sessions Court found Mat Salleh guilty of physical sexual assault of a teenage boy, who was then 14 years and one month old, and sentenced him to six years in prison.
The offence was committed at a housing estate in Marang in March 2018.
The charge was framed under Section 14(d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which provides imprisonment not exceeding 20 years, and is also liable to whipping upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Nabihah Hanin Ayim appeared for the prosecution while Mat Salleh was represented by lawyer Wan Suhaili Wan Ismail, who said that her client would file an appeal at the Court of Appeal against today's decision. — BERNAMA

ALOR SETAR, Aug 18 — The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) arrested a Thai woman for trying to smuggle diesel using a vehicle with a Malaysian registration number plate at a petrol station in Kuala Nerang on Saturday. Kedah KPDN director Muhammad Nizam Jamaludin said the woman, in her 40s, was arrested based on a public tip-off and intelligence gathered by Alor Setar KPDN enforcement personnel. 'Further inspection revealed diesel kept in a modified tank,' he said in a statement last night, adding that an inspection at the petrol station found that the station had sold 273 litres of diesel in a single transaction to the suspect's vehicle, violating the Supply Controller's instructions on the limit of sales to locally-registered vehicles in a single day. Diesel worth almost RM800, a pickup truck, purchase receipts and documents totalling over RM30,790 were seized, he said, adding that the case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961. — Bernama

Langkawi cops arrest seven over counterfeit cash scam
ALOR SETAR: Police have arrested seven individuals, including two women, in connection with a counterfeit money scam involving fake RM100 notes used at several retail premises around Langkawi. Langkawi OCPD Asst Comm Shariman Ashari confirmed that authorities have received four reports of counterfeit RM100 notes being used in transactions at businesses in Chenang, Padang Matsirat, and Kuah. "Following the reports and tips from the public, police apprehended five men and two local women, aged between 24 and 36 years old, in two separate locations starting from 8.30pm yesterday," he said in a statement Sunday (Aug 17) night. Urine tests on the suspects revealed all tested positive for drugs, and some have prior criminal records linked to drugs and other offences. The suspects have been remanded for three days until Tuesday (Aug 19). The case is being investigated under Section 489B of the Penal Code. - Bernama

Dog euthanised following severe abuse in Krubong, police hunt suspects
MELAKA, Aug 18 — Police are seeking the public's assistance in providing information regarding a shocking case of animal abuse at the Krubong industrial area, where a dog was found severely injured, with parts of its body and head stripped of fur and skinned. Melaka Tengah police chief ACP Christopher Patit said they received a report about the incident at 2.43pm yesterday. 'The incident is believed to have occurred last Friday at around 3pm when the complainant, along with representatives from several animal welfare NGOs, responded to a tip-off from the public. 'Upon inspection near a factory in the industrial area, the dog was found with serious injuries to its body and neck, suspected to have been caused by abuse,' he said in a statement here last night. The animal was rushed to a veterinary clinic, but after a thorough examination, it was determined that the injuries were too severe. On the advice of the veterinarian, the dog was euthanised to prevent further suffering. The case is being investigated under Section 29 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015, which carries penalties of up to RM100,000 in fines, three years of imprisonment, or both.
