Enemies will step up slander, lies: Chief Minister

Kota Kinabalu: Sabahans, including GRS members, have been urged to be vigilant and wary against opposition dirty tactics of deliberately fabricating issues to mislead the public in the lead-up to the 17th State Election (PRN17). CM-cum-Gagasan Rakyat President Datuk Seri Hajiji said these challenges do not stem from a strong opposition or from our own weakness, but rather from the lies, falsehoods, fabricated stories and above all, slander that they must confront. 'PRN17 brings with it a thousand and one challenges, not because the opposition is strong or GRS is weak, but because we are facing a barrage of lies, fabrications, false stories, and above all, slander. 'Nowadays, social media has become the most popular platform for spreading propaganda and misinformation, which the opposition is using to gain political mileage. 'Every day, they concoct false stories, viral misleading videos and fabricated infographics that are widely circulated, pushed by opposition to tarnish the GRS and manipulate public opinion for their political gain. This is how the opposition launches its attacks against us in the digital realm —and we must fight back with everything we've got!' he said. 'Not all the issues being sensationalised are true or credible! Many are concocted and manufactured with the sole intent of deceiving the public into believing them. Such tactics can lead to endless political unrest. 'Spreading slander and falsehood is the hallmark of dirty politics and we strongly condemn it. Let us not fall into the trap of such unscrupulous tactics. 'Not only are they morally and legally wrong, but any party that wins through dirty politics, slander and lies will not stand the test of time because eventually, the truth will be known,' he said. Hajiji who is also GRS Chairman said this to send a strong and direct response to the many allegations and accusations hurled at GRS and its leaders with PRN17 just around the corner. Despite ongoing criticism and attacks aimed at discrediting the government's efforts, Hajiji said GRS' track record of success cannot be denied. 'I know there are those who are jealous of our success. They want to see us fall apart, humiliated, and defeated. That is why they continue to make baseless accusations to deceive the people. They will never stop. They will relentlessly attack and belittle our hard work,' he said. 'Take good care of GRS. GRS supreme council yet to endorse electoral pact with Pakatan, says SAPP chief
KOTA KINABALU: The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) supreme council has yet to discuss and collectively agree to endorse the electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan, says Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee. The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president said so far, the GRS supreme council had not held a meeting to endorse the electoral pact with Pakatan announced by Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on Sunday on the sidelines of the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah annual general meeting. "There has not been a meeting of the Supreme Council in the last few months. If and when there is a meeting, of course, we will attend. "As for what might happen, it depends. For example, what has been agreed between the GRS chairman and Pakatan? Was anything agreed at all?" Yong asked. Hajiji's announcement of the pact took several of the eight party GRS leaders by surprise. The leaders declined to make any immediate comments, saying they wanted clarification on the matter first. Yong said that Hajiji had discussed the matter with GRS component party presidents but nothing was finalised until approved by the GRS supreme council. He also said it was confusing as Pakatan and Barisan have said that they have finalised seat allocation for the Sabah polls. GRS had shown signs it was keen to go solo but Hajiji had constantly voiced preference to continue working with Pakatan for political stability. GRS and Barisan, who worked together to topple the state government under Warisan-Pakatan government in the September 2020 state polls, have been at loggerheads since Barisan pulled its support for Hajiji in January 2023. Sabah Pakatan gave their backing to GRS for the Hajiji-led government to remain in power.

Sabah-based parties must unite to revive 1984 Labuan's original vision – Jeffrey

LABUAN (July 28): Political parties from Sabah operating in Labuan must work together to achieve the shared goal of realizing the vision for Labuan that was hoped for when the island was handed over to become a Federal Territory in 1984. President of Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) Sabah and Sabah Deputy Chief Minister I, Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey G Kitingan, said the current situation in Labuan is far from the original expectations. In fact, Labuan, once a duty-free island, no longer enjoys the same duty-free status as it once did. 'This concern is based on fact. even former Sabah Chief Minister Tan Sri Harris Salleh, who was the architect behind Labuan's handover as a Federal Territory, has acknowledged that his original objective for Labuan has failed,' he said. Jeffrey emphasized that since 1984, the hope was for Labuan to be developed economically, creating ample job opportunities and increasing income levels for its people. 'Back then in 1984, the entire Borneo region hoped Labuan would become a catalyst for development in Sabah and Sarawak,' he added. Jeffrey made these remarks at the launching ceremony of STAR's Labuan Division on Saturday, which was attended by Secretary-General Senator Datuk Edward Linggu, Labuan STAR coordinator Datuk Kapitan Stephen Teo, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Labuan Division chief Datuk Peter Mak, and Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) deputy division chief Dr Harun Hj Pudin. During the event, which drew around 500 attendees, STAR Labuan Division chief Walther Philip Michael expressed that the administration in the Federal Territory of Labuan does not fully represent the interests of all ethnic groups, particularly the native Sabahans whose customs are protected under traditional ordinances. Jeffrey noted that the changes in Labuan have strayed far from the original 1984 aspirations. Instead, the culture and traditions of some Labuan residents — who were once part of Sabah — have been 'Malay-ised.' 'Today, some Labuan residents feel sidelined in the Federal Territory's administration. They want to be involved in policy-making and implementation,' he said. According to Jeffrey, the concerns being raised are not out of anger or resentment but are simply calls for positive changes that would make Labuan a source of pride for all. He added that this is precisely why STAR established its division in Labuan. Through cooperation with fellow component parties under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition, the aim is for Labuan's politics to one day be led and managed by Sabah-based parties. 'This issue has also been raised in Parliament. I myself have repeatedly called for the restoration of Labuan's duty-free status, but unfortunately, our pleas have yet to be heard,' he stated. Jeffrey concluded that Sabahans in Labuan have urged STAR to act as a voice for their concerns and to propose ideas that would lead to a more developed and inclusive Labuan.

GRS-PH alliance firm for Sabah polls, 'flip-flop' claims dismissed
Johainizamshah KOTA KINABALU (July 28): Allegations that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is inconsistent and 'one moment wants to go solo, and the next moment doesn't' in its approach to the upcoming 17th State Election have been described as baseless and misleading to the public. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Lamag Division deputy chief Johainizamshah Johari stressed that from the beginning, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor who is also the president of Gagasan Rakyat, has maintained a clear and consistent position to collaborate with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in facing the upcoming state election. 'The issue and claims that the Chief Minister is flip-flopping on his stance are inaccurate. What happened was merely a temporary reaction to the official announcement of cooperation between Barisan Nasional (BN) and PH on May 8 and 9 at the federal level, which was made without specific details involving Sabah. 'At that time, Hajiji merely expressed the possibility that GRS could contest independently if the state's political situation required it. It did not mean rejecting cooperation with PH; rather, it demonstrated openness in making decisions based on Sabah's interests,' he said in a statement on Monday. According to Johainizamshah, the situation became clearer after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's working visit to Tawau on May 11, when the Prime Minister openly expressed his desire for GRS, PH and BN in Sabah to cooperate in the run-up to the state election. 'More importantly, the Prime Minister personally requested Hajiji to lead the coalition's negotiations. This reflects trust and respect for his leadership,' he said. He added that this was further affirmed by Hajiji himself during the 2025 Gagasan Rakyat Annual General Assembly last Sunday, where he clearly stated that Gagasan Rakyat/GRS would work together with PH in the upcoming state election. 'There has not been a single official statement from Hajiji rejecting cooperation with PH. Therefore, the issue of inconsistency or confusion, as claimed by certain quarters — particularly the opposition — is unfounded,' he said. Johainizamshah stressed that the most important thing now is to maintain political stability to ensure continued development in Sabah and that the people benefit from progress. 'We do not want Sabah to become like other resource-rich regions abroad that have failed to uplift their people, such as the Niger Delta in Nigeria, Katanga in Congo, and Chhattisgarh in India — all rich in resources, but their people live in poverty. 'Therefore, we must unite, support the current leadership, and avoid political games that could jeopardise efforts to develop our state,' he said.
