Malaysia advocates AI and innovation for food security at APEC FSMM
He shared these insights during a roundtable session at the 10th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Food Security Ministerial Meeting (FSMM) in Incheon, South Korea.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) stated that Mohamad led Malaysia's delegation and called for regional cooperation to achieve sustainable food security.
'Malaysia is deeply concerned about global food security challenges worsened by conflicts, climate disasters, and economic instability,' the ministry said.
The ministry also highlighted the hunger crises in Sudan and Gaza, condemning violations of the human right to food.
'Malaysia urges immediate humanitarian aid and relief efforts in affected regions,' the statement added.
The 10th FSMM, themed 'Building a Sustainable Tomorrow', focused on three priorities: Connect, Innovate, and Prosper.
The meeting served as a platform for discussions on agricultural innovation and sustainable food security strategies.
Key topics included sustainability, smart innovation, and aligning global connectivity with APEC economic priorities.
On the sidelines, Mohamad met South Korea's Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Song Mi-ryung.
Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing agricultural cooperation between the two nations.
Discussions covered research collaboration, modern farming techniques, and human capital development.
AI applications for early pest detection in paddy crops were also explored as a potential area of partnership.
Mohamad invited South Korea to attend the High-Level Advisory Group (HLAG2025) meeting in Kuala Lumpur this September.
The event will coincide with the 4th World Irrigation Forum and the 76th ICID International Executive Council Meeting. - Bernama

2,153 aquaculture entrepreneurs nationwide receive MyGAP certification
JERTIH: The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has issued a total of 2,153 Good Aquaculture Practice (MyGAP) certifications to aquaculture industry players across Malaysia. Department of Fisheries deputy director-general (Management) Yeo Moi Eim noted steady growth in certifications over the past five years, with Terengganu showing significant progress. A total of 45 MyGAP certifications have been awarded in Terengganu, including 25 to fish farmers in Besut district. Yeo attributed this growth to increased awareness among operators, driven by DOF initiatives such as workshops and promotional campaigns. She spoke to reporters after the opening ceremony of a MyGAP seminar and fisheries incentives presentation at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin's Besut Campus. The event was officiated by Terengganu Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Food Security and Commodities Committee chairman Datuk Dr Azman Ibrahim. Yeo explained that MyGAP certification recognises aquaculture entrepreneurs who meet standards for producing safe, high-quality products. She emphasised that the certification reflects social responsibility, ensuring farm operations avoid environmental pollution and use safe ingredients. Meanwhile, Azman stated the Terengganu government aims to help 500 farmers obtain MyGAP certification within two years. He identified land status as a key obstacle for farmers seeking certification, with the state government taking measures to resolve illegal cultivation issues. Lawyer seeks to disqualify Anwar as PM, Tambun MP
Lawyer P Waytha Moorthy wants the High Court to declare Anwar Ibrahim's election as Tambun MP on Nov 19, 2022, and his appointment as prime minister five days later, null and void. KUALA LUMPUR : Lawyer P Waytha Moorthy has filed a suit seeking a declaration that Anwar Ibrahim should not have been elected as Tambun MP in November 2022 and appointed prime minister. He contends this is because Anwar's 2018 royal pardon did not state that he was exempt from the five-year disqualification period for contesting an election after being released from prison. Waytha, a minister in Dr Mahathir Mohamad's Cabinet from 2018 to 2020, wants the High Court here to declare Anwar's election as Tambun MP on Nov 19, 2022, and his appointment as prime minister five days later, null and void. The originating summons was filed today at the High Court by solicitors Messrs Karthig Shan, with Anwar named as the defendant. Waytha, who filed the action in his capacity as a lawyer, said he brought the public interest action to uphold the rule of law, the Federal Constitution and to protect the integrity of Malaysia's parliamentary democracy. The Malaysian Advancement Party president said Anwar was convicted and sentenced to a jail term exceeding one year, which would disqualify him from being elected as a member of the Dewan Rakyat by Article 48(1)(e) of the Federal Constitution. He is also seeking other relief deemed fit and proper by the court and costs. On May 16, 2018, the then king granted Anwar a full pardon for three cases involving abuse of power and sodomy charges, citing a 'miscarriage of justice'. Anwar told a press conference that the pardon was also on the basis that there was a conspiracy to condemn him and assassinate his political character. 'The pardon is complete and unconditional. The entire convictions are erased automatically,' he had said. Anwar was then elected Port Dickson MP in a by-election in October 2018. A similar suit filed by a voter to question his eligibility to stand in the by-election was thrown out by the High Court in 2018. Waytha contended that the pardon order did not express the removal of the five-year exemption from May 16, 2018, the date of Anwar's release from prison. He said Article 48(3) of the Federal Constitution bars Anwar from contesting a Dewan Rakyat seat for five years after the pardon, and as such the PKR president had misrepresented himself as qualified to contest in the 2022 general election. He said Anwar's five-year disqualification period was still effective at the time he filed his nomination papers and got elected on Nov 19, 2022.
