Ferguson ruled out of Champions Trophy

Express Tribune19-02-2025
New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a foot injury sustained during a warm-up match against Afghanistan in Karachi on Sunday.
Ferguson felt pain in his right foot after bowling a spell, and an initial medical assessment confirmed he would not be fit for the remainder of the tournament.
With the Champions Trophy set to begin tomorrow and its short duration, the decision was made to send Ferguson home for rehabilitation.
To fill the gap left by Ferguson, Canterbury Kings fast bowler Kyle Jamieson will join the Blackcaps squad and depart for Pakistan this evening.
Jamieson made a successful return to domestic cricket in December after recovering from a 10-month rehabilitation for a stress fracture in his back.
Playing for Canterbury in the Dream11 Super Smash, he was instrumental in the Kings' Grand Final run, finishing as the joint second-leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets, including impressive figures of 4-12 against the Central Stags at Hagley Oval. Jamieson also featured in Canterbury's recent Ford Trophy matches, including a win over Northern Districts in Hamilton.
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed disappointment over Ferguson's injury, emphasizing the importance of his experience and contributions to the team.
"We're really disappointed for Lockie," Stead said.
"Lockie is a key part of the bowling group and brings a lot of major tournament experience, and we know how much he was looking forward to representing New Zealand at another major event. We wish him well for his recovery and hope he is back firing soon," he added.
"Kyle brings plenty of pace and extra bounce, which will suit the conditions here in Pakistan," he said.
"He's shown since returning in the Dream11 Super Smash how effective he can be in the shorter forms of the game, and he's bowled with real pace and energy, which is what you're looking for from a pace bowler, especially at a pinnacle event.

Three Australia players ruled out of South Africa series

Australia has been forced into a trio of late changes ahead of the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, with Mitchell Owen, Lance Morris, and Matt Short all ruled out due to injury concerns. Replacements Aaron Hardie, Cooper Connolly, and Matt Kuhnemann have been drafted into the squad. Mitchell Owen has been ruled out of both the decisive third T20I and the subsequent ODI series after suffering a concussion. He was struck on the helmet by a sharp bouncer from Kagiso Rabada in the second T20I in Darwin. Although he passed an on-field concussion assessment, Owen later reported delayed symptoms following his dismissal and will now undergo the mandatory 12-day stand-down period, ruling him out of a potential ODI debut. Fast bowler Lance Morris has also been sidelined after experiencing back soreness during training. The injury is a worrying setback for Morris, who has a history of back issues. He has returned to Perth for further evaluation, casting doubt over his availability for the upcoming Australia A four-day tour of India. Allrounder Matt Short, who was initially ruled out of the first two T20Is due to a side strain sustained in the West Indies, has now been ruled out of the entire South Africa series. It marks another frustrating interruption to Short's international career, having also missed part of the Champions Trophy earlier this year with a quad injury. South Africa leveled the T20I series with a commanding 53-run win on Tuesday, setting up a series decider in Cairns on Saturday. The same city will host the first ODI on August 19, followed by matches in Mackay on August 22 and 24. Hardie, who had already joined the T20I squad as cover for Short, now stays on for the ODI leg. Left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann, who last played ODIs in 2022, returns and could feature in a spin-heavy attack alongside Adam Zampa. Cooper Connolly, a left-handed batter and left-arm spinner, joins the squad after making his international debut during the Champions Trophy semi-final against India earlier this year. Meanwhile, Josh Inglis missed the second T20I with flu-like symptoms. Alex Carey was called in as cover and made his first T20I appearance since 2021. Updated Australia ODI Squad: Mitchell Marsh (capt), Xavier Bartlett, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Adam Zampa.

Ganguly opens up about Kohli, Rohit's retirement

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have already retired from T20Is and Tests. Photo: AFP/File Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Sunday responded to reports suggesting Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could retire from One Day Internationals following India's three-match series against Australia in October. Speaking at an event in Ahmedabad, Ganguly said he is unaware of any such decision and believes performance should be the only factor in deciding their ODI futures. "I'm not aware of this, can't comment on this. Whoever does well will play. If they do well, they should continue," Ganguly remarked. Ganguly also lauded their contributions to Indian cricket, noting their crucial roles in helping India win the Champions Trophy earlier this year. "It's difficult to say. But Kohli's one-day record is phenomenal, even Rohit Sharma's. Both of them are phenomenal in white-ball cricket," said. Earlier, Kohli and Sharma are reportedly set to retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs) later this year, following their recent retirements from Test and T20 formats. The veteran duo, who have already stepped away from Tests and T20 internationals, Kohli retiring from Tests in May 2025 and both calling time on their T20I careers after India's 2024 T20 World Cup victory, continue to represent India in the 50-over format. According to a report, both players are expected to feature for the last time in their careers during the upcoming ODI series against Australia scheduled for October 2025. Despite their continued presence in ODIs, speculation is mounting that this series might mark the final chapter of their international careers in the format. Reports suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not currently see Kohli and Sharma as part of the core plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Reports claim that to remain in contention for the national ODI squad beyond this series, both players may be required to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India's premier domestic one-day tournament, starting December 2025. This move could effectively push Kohli and Sharma towards announcing their retirement from international cricket after the Australia series. A source told Indian media, "Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma do not fit into our plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. "With more than two years to go before the event and both players nearing 40 by then, there needs to be a clear strategy. We also need to nurture young talent for the future."

Pakistan slide in ICC ODI rankings after West Indies loss

Pakistan have slipped one place to fifth in the latest ICC Men's One Day International (ODI) rankings following their defeat against the West Indies in the ongoing three-match series. According to the updated standings released on Monday, Pakistan now have 3,465 points, allowing Sri Lanka to move up to fourth with 4,009 points. The West Indies, meanwhile, climbed to ninth, pushing Bangladesh down to tenth. India lead the ODI table with 4,471 points, followed by New Zealand (4,160) and Australia (3,473). South Africa occupy sixth position with 2,775 points, while Afghanistan remain seventh on 2,279 points. Pakistan face fifth bowler dilemma ahead of West Indies decider Pakistan's recent ODI form has been inconsistent. They exited the ICC World Cup 2023 in the group stage, including a first-ever ODI loss to Afghanistan, a result that saw Babar Azam replaced as captain by Mohammad Rizwan. Rizwan oversaw series victories away to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, but the side fell short in the home tri-nation final against New Zealand and failed to progress beyond the first round of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Pakistan later lost an away series to New Zealand and are now in the Caribbean, with their current series against the West Indies level at 1-1 ahead of the decider.
