Ewon: Sabah's Madani Rakyat Programme 2025 offers wide-ranging support to lift rural, B40 communities out of poverty
He urged Sabahans to seize these opportunities and assistance, including entrepreneurship, cooperatives, and employment options.
He said the Sabah PMR 2025 theme, 'Menoktahkan Kemiskinan Melalui Keusahawanan' (Eliminating Poverty Through Entrepreneurship), reflects the government's commitment to addressing poverty sustainably by empowering the people through entrepreneurial initiatives — creating income opportunities, employment, and social mobility, particularly for rural and B40 communities.
'The public can access various opportunities and services suited to their needs by attending this PMR event. Entrepreneurs can obtain assistance, grants, and financing to grow their businesses.
'Have faith that we can put an end to the poverty that has been plaguing us in Sabah...by making the most of attending the event and getting what we need to overcome poverty and help boost our economic activity,' he said in an interview with Sabah FM radio station here today.
Sabah PMR 2025 will occur over three days, starting May 9 at the Tawau Municipal Council Square. The Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry leads the initiative, collaborating with the Performance Acceleration and Coordination Unit (PACU) and the Sabah government.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to officiate at the closing ceremony at 2pm on May 11, where top Federal and state leaders are scheduled to attend.
Ewon said that in addition to 36 exhibition booths by ministries and agencies, several satellite programmes would be held, including a gotong-royong (community clean-up) initiative in Kampung Mentadak Baru, Pulau Sebatik, Tawau on May 7, and the ministry's Halal Success Programme at Tawau Community College on May 8 and 9.
He said the Bicara Ilmu programme, in conjunction with the Turun Padang Ke Arah Memperkasakan Koperasi 2025 initiative, will take place on May 8 to discuss 'Menoktahkan Kemiskinan Melalui Model Perniagaan Koperasi' (Ending Poverty Through the Cooperative Business Model)
'A gotong-royong will be held at PPR Batu 8, Tawau, on May 11, involving the repair of the futsal court and the installation of solar panels by the Tawau Contractors Association in the housing area that accommodates 900 residential units with nearly 4,500 residents,' he said.
Ewon said the event will also feature the Satu Daerah Satu Industri (SDSI) showcase. SDSI is a strategic initiative for local economic development, focusing on empowering each district's unique product since 2019.
He said that, under the SDSI initiative, within six months, the Kudat district successfully increased its annual sales average in the traditional weaving industry by 28.7 per cent, from RM45,000 to RM57,915.
He said the SDSI initiative has also developed the stingless bee honey industry in Ranau, with an increase in the average annual sales by 25.2 per cent, from RM38,500 to RM48,202.
According to Ewon, the Sabah PMR 2025 will also feature the Madani Sales Programme, offering over 200 daily necessities at lower prices, with discounts of up to 30 per cent, including fresh chicken, eggs, rice, and cooking oil.
'This programme is also joined by 120 SDSI entrepreneurs, 24 food and beverage vendors under the Selera Di Bawah Bayu segment, and nine food truck entrepreneurs.
'Meanwhile, the pocket talk sessions at PMR 2025 Sabah will highlight various engaging topics related to entrepreneurship, cooperatives, and economic development, presented by industry experts and renowned speakers,' Ewon added. — Bernama

Responding to analyst reports predicting no single party will secure a majority, Shafie said Warisan has been an opposition party in Sabah for six years, and the priority is ensuring Sabahans decide their own future. 'I cannot make assumptions that if we don't have the numbers, then we have to work with others — we're not driven by greed. 'I'm worried that an election partner would be more concerned about benefits from the seats they win. To me, we need clarity. Let us be the only choice for Sabahans — we must resolve the people's needs now,' he said after receiving a courtesy call from United States Embassy political counsellor Chris Carver at his residence here today. Shafie stressed that Warisan will be selective in fielding candidates to prevent individuals implicated in corruption from further tarnishing Sabah's politics. 'We are not here to please them. We have to win the elections. I already told them that no corrupt practices will be tolerated,' he said. When asked if Warisan, as the main local party, would work with other Sabah-based parties, Shafie emphasised that trust and consistency are crucial. He revealed that a leader of a component party in a local coalition had told him they would leave the coalition last year, yet remained in it. 'This shows inconsistency. If they don't get the seats or arrangements they want, they will pull out. This means they are still thinking of themselves instead of the people, who still face water and electricity problems. 'Warisan was set up to fight for Sabah's rights, not to be YBs. We want proper leaders,' he said. Although not discounting potential cooperation with local parties, Shafie stressed that Warisan's focus is to work directly with the people to drive transformative change. On candidates, he said there are three to five potential individuals for each constituency, and all profiles are being scrutinised carefully. 'First, we have to win. Second, once they become YBs, they must serve their people. The people's voice must be the priority,' he said. Shafie's meeting with Chris also touched on Sabah's economy, well-being and opportunities for international partnerships. 'Interestingly, we also talked about women's football, which is very popular in Sabah. Many Malaysian national team players are Sabahans, showing our strength and passion for the game,' he said. He added that the US Embassy's recent soccer clinic in Sabah highlighted the potential for youth development and sports exchanges. 'It's always encouraging when Sabah is recognised not just for our resources, but for our people and their talents,' said Shafie.

Sabah polls: Warisan to go solo, even if any party leaves GRS
KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan will contest all 73 seats in the upcoming Sabah polls even if any local party from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) decides to leave the coalition, says Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal. The Warisan president said he had met Sabah STAR president Daruk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan in September 2024 on his party's intention to leave GRS. "Jeffrey told me he wanted to leave GRS – that was in September 2024. Till today, the party is still there (in GRS)," Shafie told reporters at his residence here after a courtesy call by political counsellor from the US Embassy Chris Carver, on Monday (Aug 18). Shafie said Sabah STAR was consistently talking about defending Sabah and its rights. "They have the voice but are still inside (GRS). It's inconsistent with what they're saying on state rights," he said. He said Warisan's focus was on Sabah and its people, not about making alliances just to hold on to power. Shafie said he would ensure every candidate picked would serve the people if they won, not just to search for projects for personal gain. He said Sabahans were a united people irrespective of the culture, religion or race but some sadly continue to play divisive roles just to stay in power, doing little for the people for decades. "Families are divided because of politics," he said, adding that Jeffrey defeated his brother Tan Sri Joseph Parin Kitingan (Parti Bersatu Sabah) in Tambunan in the 2018 election. "Some effort must be made to unite Sabahans by using just one party. "We must not sell the future of children for any personal political agenda," he said, adding that the eight-party GRS under Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor had failed to meet the expectations of Sabahans. Calling for a "wake-up call", he said that there was no need for Sabahans to depend on political warlords and families. Asked if Warisan would still forge an alliance in the event of a hung assembly, he said Warisan was providing the platform for the people to decide their future. "We have been in the Opposition for six years and it is important for Sabahans to decide their future. I cannot assume we will not have the numbers. "We leave the choice to the people, we are not driven by greed" he said.

19 high-impact programmes for Indian community in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 19 high-impact programmes under the Socioeconomic Development Programme for the Indian Community (PPSMI) have been planned for this year with an allocation of RM22.27 million. Deputy Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Seri R. Ramanan stated that these initiatives focus on education, spirituality, culture, and social well-being. He urged against claims that the Indian community is neglected, emphasising the MADANI government's commitment to welfare. Ramanan dismissed allegations of unutilised funds, confirming full spending in 2023 and 99 per cent in 2024. In 2023, MITRA implemented 221 initiatives benefiting 134,510 individuals with RM100 million. For 2024, RM98.9 million was allocated across 13 programmes, reaching 122,082 people. MITRA annually receives RM100 million for PPSMI, focusing on entrepreneurship, education, and social development. Coordination is key to avoiding overlaps, especially in TVET programmes managed by the National TVET Council. The 13MP outlines strategies to improve the Indian community's socioeconomic status through education, infrastructure, and economic support.
