Anchored by the Commerce and Transport department, the new destination policy aims to expand regional and international air connectivity through structured incentives, route support, and facilitation for airlines, he said. 'Within a short span, the policy has significantly enhanced Odisha's aviation footprint both globally and domestically. A total of 13 new international and domestic flight services have been operationalised under the New Destination Policy, opening new corridors for trade, tourism, and regional integration,' he added.
On the international front, direct flights from Bhubaneswar to Dubai and Abu Dhabi have positioned the State on the global aviation map, strengthening diaspora ties and unlocking global market access. On the domestic front, routes such as Jharsuguda–Mumbai, Jharsuguda–Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar–Goa, Bhubaneswar–Dehradun and Bhubaneswar–Port Blair, among others, have enhanced connectivity to tribal regions, industrial zones and key tourist destinations, he added.
These services are further supported by the operationalisation of regional airstrips at Jeypore, Rourkela, Utkela and Rangeilunda under the UDAN scheme, ensuring seamless last mile connectivity, he said. This apart, the proposed Puri airport project has achieved a major milestone with the launch of the Interactive Colour Coded Zoning Map (CCZM) on NOCAS 2.0.
This transformative digital tool enables online height clearance processing, ensuring that aviation planning is integrated with safe urban development, regulated infrastructure growth and environmental safeguards.
Further strengthening its futuristic outlook, the Odisha government is also in the process of formulating a dedicated drone policy and fast tracking land allotment for airport infrastructure, reinforcing its mission to build a resilient and innovation driven aviation ecosystem, according to an official release by the Commerce and Transport department.

A Morgan Stanley report on Wednesday said it expects India's economy to be the third-largest globally by 2028 and more than double in size to $10.6 trillion by 2035. Embedded in this forecast is the likelihood that three to five states (Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka) will have an economy of nearly $1 trillion each, ranking in the top 20 global economies between 2030 and 2035, the report projected. "Based on the latest data, the top three states are Maharashtra, Gujarat and Telangana. The states showing significant improvement in ranks over the past five years are Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh,' the report noted. India will drive a fifth of global growth in the coming decade and become essential to earnings growth for many multinational companies. 'To secure this outcome, among other things, the role of India's 28 states and eight Union Territories is critical. States not only play a pivotal role in fiscal management but also compete for investments by creating suitable policies and incentives, easing business conditions (ultimately, a business or factory is set up in a particular state),' said economists from the global financial institution. They have independent political cycles with varying mandates that can affect growth positively or negatively and are empowered by law to control factors of production. 'The success of India's competitive federalism will help decide whether she becomes a factory to the world, doubling her per capita income in the coming seven years – and whether the stock market continues its strong performance,' the report emphasised. States are economically important as India becomes a $10.6 trillion economy by 2035, wielding considerable political and legislative power. Their policy frameworks are capable of influencing India's rise as a global manufacturing hub. In the past decade, there has been a concerted push for development of physical infrastructure – the Central government doubled its capex to 3.2 per cent of GDP in FY2025 from 1.6 per cent of GDP in FY2015. This has led to significant infrastructure growth across states. 'Highways rose 60 per cent, airports doubled, and metro network quadrupled. Infrastructure programmes spearheaded by the Central government -- such as PM Gati Shakti, the National Infrastructure Pipeline, Bharatmala, Sagar Mala, and UDAN -- have been promulgated alongside state-specific initiatives,' said the report. States collaborate with the Centre on these projects and play a crucial role in planning and implementation. Further, state governments are also responsible for investments in areas related to power, water, and urban development, it mentioned.

Arrangements for Sri Sathya Sai's birth centenary fete reviewed
Puttaparthi, (Sri Sathya Sai district): In view of the upcoming 100th birth anniversary celebrations of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba scheduled for November 22–23, senior officials led by Ajay Jain, Special Chief Secretary of Tourism and Culture, conducted a comprehensive review of preparatory works in Puttaparthi. He was accompanied by District Collector T.S. Chetan, SP Ratna, Joint Collector Abhishek Kumar and Puttaparthi MLA Palle Sindhura Reddy. The team visited key locations including the helipad, West Gate to Outer Ring Road, and NH-44 near the Sri Sathya Sai Airport. Instructions were issued for beautification works, road repairs, improved lighting, and installation of a Sri Sathya Sai statue at the West Gate Circle. MLA Palle Sindhura Reddy requested special funds for infrastructure development in view of the celebrations. She thanked Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for recognising the centenary fete as a State-level festival and for the prompt issuance of official orders to that effect. During a review meeting held at the District Collectorate, the MLA emphasised the importance of showcasing Puttaparthi as a global spiritual destination. She urged that the festivities be conducted with grandeur and spiritual fervour, reflecting Baba's universal legacy. Former minister Dr Palle Raghunatha Reddy also stressed the need for better infrastructure, expecting over one million visitors from across the globe. Ajay Jain assured the release of Rs 105 crore in special funds and expressed satisfaction with the district administration's preparedness. He also confirmed that a high-level committee will be formed to oversee arrangements and coordinate with relevant departments. Officials were directed to expedite works in areas such as Chitravathi Riverfront, Shilparamam, theme parks, and key approach roads. Enhanced amenities like lighting, sanitation, drinking water, and public restrooms were also prioritised. The celebrations, set to span 25 days in November, will receive focused attention from the State government, with regular reviews to ensure timely execution of all development works.

Tamil Nadu government identifies five sites for Rameswaram airport
In a significant development, the Tamil Nadu government is looking to finalise a site to establish the Rameswaram airport in Ramanathapuram district, with five sites being identified so far. This comes four months after Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu announced that an airport would be set up in the area, with the aim of improving infrastructure and boosting tourism in the economically backward parts of south Tamil Nadu. These five sites will soon be narrowed down to three, and the Airports Authority of India is likely to prepare a pre-feasibility report, weighing the pros and cons of each site. Based on this report, the government may single out a site by next year. 'Nearly 700 acres will be required for establishing the Rameswaram airport. We are thinking of an airport with one runway, and capable of handling Code C aircraft,' a source said. Once the feasibility report is ready, an Obstacle Limitation Surfaces survey will be carried out to inspect the height of the surrounding buildings and to check the viability of flight operations in the proposed sites. Rameswaram witnesses a flurry of tourists round the year, not only from the State, but also from north India, said S.P. Rajendran, chairman, Travel Agents Association of India, South Tamil Nadu Chapter. Most of them take a flight to Madurai, followed by a three-hour drive to reach Rameswaram. 'Thousands of people visit the Ramanathaswamy temple as well as Dhanushkodi. There are many who first head to Varanasi, and then come to Rameshwaram to complete their spiritual journey. Foreign tourists will particularly benefit from the expansion of air connectivity to Rameswaram,' he added. Mohammed Afzal, chair, tourism committee, The Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry and managing director, Parveen Travels, says once the airport is established, there will be an influx of tourists, and this will give a much-needed boost to the local economy of the region. 'The business community will be keen to explore the opportunities presented by an airport in the vicinity, and this could attract a lot of investments in the long run. Both direct and indirect job opportunities will arise,' he added.
