Mark Chapman to present Saturday's Match Of The Day

RTÉ Newsa day ago
Mark Chapman will be the first of the trio of presenters replacing the departed Gary Lineker when BBC One's Match Of The Day Saturday highlights programme returns this weekend.
The PA news agency understands that the 51-year-old - part of a three-person presenting line-up alongside Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan - who will work on rotation this English football season.
PA understands Chapman will be the first of the trio to host the flagship Saturday night show.
It is understood Cates will host a programme on Wednesday consisting of Uefa Super Cup highlights and a look-ahead to the new English Premier League season, which begins on Friday night, while Logan will host Match Of The Day 's Sunday night programme this week.
The BBC announced on January 15 that Cates, Chapman and Logan would become the presenting team following weeks of speculation about who would take over from Lineker after he said last year that he was stepping down.
The 64-year-old had long intended the final Match Of The Day of last season, on May 26, would be the last time he presented the highlights programme, but was planning to stay on to front the BBC's live coverage of the FA Cup and 2026 World Cup.
However, earlier in the month however he announced he was bringing forward his departure following a social media row in which he shared a post about Zionism featuring a depiction of a rat, historically used as an antisemitic trope.
Lineker, the BBC's highest-paid presenter and Match Of The Day host since 1999, apologised unreservedly for the post but said it was "best for all concerned" if he left completely.
The Leicester-born former England football captain also runs Goalhanger Podcasts which produces podcasts such as The Rest Is Football, The Rest Is History, The Rest Is Politics, and The Rest Is Entertainment.
Cates, 49, the daughter of former Liverpool and Scotland forward and manager Kenny Dalglish, has been a presenter with Sky Sports since rejoining the broadcaster in 2016, fronting coverage of the Premier League. She is also continuing her role with Sky Sports.
Chapman has been broadcasting for more than 25 years and has been a regular presenter of the BBC's Sunday night Match Of The Day programme.
Former gymnast Logan - whose father is former Leeds United and Wales footballer Terry Yorath - became one of the first female sports anchors to break into terrestrial television and has covered several Olympic Games, the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games during her time at the BBC.
The 52-year-old has presented Match Of The Day in Lineker's absence on many occasions, and was also a key part of the BBC's coverage of the Women's Euros in 2022 and last month.
Match Of The Day will return on BBC One at 10.20pm on Saturday August 16.

Liverpool in talks with Crystal Palace over move for Marc Guehi

Liverpool are in talks to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and are pursuing a deal for Parma teenager Giovanni Leoni. Arne Slot's Reds have been busy since winning last season's Premier League, with Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez among the summer arrivals. Liverpool have also seen a £110million bid rejected in recent weeks for unsettled Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, but defensive reinforcements appear to be the current priority. Marc Guehi played a key role for England at Euro 2024 (Nick Potts/PA) PA understands the Anfield outfit are in discussions with Palace over a deal for England international Guehi. The 25-year-old captained the Eagles to victory against Liverpool in Sunday's Community Shield at Wembley and is out of contract next summer. Guehi starred in England's run to the Euro 2024 final and will want regular game time ahead of next summer's World Cup. Liverpool are hopeful that the former Chelsea defender wants to join them but sources have denied reports that personal terms have been agreed. PA understands Liverpool are also interested in 18-year-old defender Leoni from Parma and are in talks with the Serie A side. The Italy Under-19 international spent time with Padova and Sampdoria before moving to Emilia-Romagna last year.

Mark English smashes his Irish 800m record in Budapest

In a season of breakthroughs, Mark English took another big step forward on Tuesday evening, the 32-year-old smashing his Irish record when finishing second over 800m in 1:43.37 at the Gyulai István Memorial, a Continental Tour Gold meeting, in Budapest. That brought him home behind Kenya's Laban Kipkorir Chepkwony (1:42.96), with France's Yanis Meziane third in 1:43.71. It's the third time English has broken his national 800m record this season, having clocked 1:44.34 in Poland in May and then 1:43.92 in Hengelo, the Netherlands, in June. English had been in fine form since then, powering to his 10th national outdoor title over 800m earlier this month ahead of Cian McPhillips. 'Hopefully I'll have another race or two before the World Championships and I can't wait for that because I'm in great shape at the minute,' he said after that race. 'I'd like to be able to show it with a time.' English bided his time midway through the final lap and unleashed his typically strong finish to take the runner-up spot, his time moving him joint-16th on the world list for 2025 and carving over half a second off his Irish record, marking the third time this season that he has run under 1:44. English had a number of world-class operators behind him, with Spain's Mariano Garcia – a former world indoor and European champion – fourth in 1:43.84, while reigning European Indoor champion Sam Chapple was fifth in 1:43.96 and 2023 world bronze medallist Ben Pattison came home seventh in 1:44.14. English, who won his fifth European medal by taking bronze at the European Indoors in the Netherlands in March, has never made a global final but as the countdown continues to next month's World Championships in Tokyo, he looks to have a decent chance of doing so this year. He has yet to announce if this will be his last season. 'I don't really like to put a clock on my career,' he said in June. 'If you think you're retiring at a certain point, that might change how you come into a race; it might change your motivation.' He said part of his motivation to continue this year was to run under 1:44 for the first time. 'I wanted to get the best out of myself in terms of what I knew I was capable of doing,' he said. 'I knew I had a 1:43 in me and I felt it would be very hard for me to hang up my spikes if I didn't achieve what I knew I was capable of doing.'

Jack Grealish joins Everton on season-long loan from Manchester City

Everton have completed the signing of England winger Jack Grealish on a season-long loan from Manchester City. The 29-year-old has been looking for an exit from Etihad Stadium after making only seven Premier League starts for Pep Guardiola's side last season, seeking regular football ahead of next summer's World Cup. 'I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton – it's massive for me, honestly,' Grealish said. 'This is a great club, with great fans. 'As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go. On social media, I've been flooded with messages from Everton supporters, so there's that side of it as well and that's another reason why I chose Everton. 'I want to say thank you to the fans for all of the messages I've had already. Thank you for all of the love and support. I hope I can repay you now and I'm sure I will.' Grealish has won three Premier League titles, two FA Cups, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup since joining City for a British-record transfer fee in the summer of 2021. He was integral to the City side that completed a Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup treble in 2022/23 but was hampered by injury in the following campaign and has since fallen down the pecking order. Jack Grealish is hoping regular football can help him force his way back into the England squad (Nick Potts/PA) Grealish said he was 'heartbroken' to have been left out of England's Euro 2024 squad last summer and is targeting a return to the international arena under Thomas Tuchel as the World Cup looms large. Grealish has chosen to wear the number 18 at Everton in honour of two former England internationals. 'There is a reason for (choosing number 18),' he explained. 'There were other numbers, but my two favourite English players ever are Wayne Rooney and Paul Gascoigne and I know they both wore number 18 here. 'So, as soon as I knew this deal was close, I had a look and number 18 was free, so that was perfect for me and it was the only number I was going to take from that point. Grealish chose his number in tribute to Paul Gascoigne and Wayne Rooney (Rebecca Naden/Phil Noble/PA) 'I spoke to Wayne before I came here and I mentioned that to him – about the number 18 – so I hope he's happy as well.' Grealish is Everton's sixth summer signing following the arrivals of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Charly Alcaraz, Thierno Barry, Mark Travers and Adam Aznou. 'We welcome Jack to Everton and we're very pleased to have him on board,' manager David Moyes said. Jack Grealish has joined Everton on loan for the 2025/26 season. Best of luck, @JackGrealish 🩵 — Manchester City (@ManCity) August 12, 2025 'I think we're getting him at a good time because he's experienced, he understands the Premier League and we're all fully aware of the levels he's capable of performing to. 'I know Jack's ambition is to get back into the England squad, so hopefully we can help him achieve that over the course of the season.' Everton launch their new campaign at newly-promoted Leeds on Monday before playing their first Premier League game at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium against Brighton on August 24.
