
Centre awaits Karnataka's nod for revised Bengaluru metro phase-2 costs

The Minister, who was in Bengaluru to review the progress of various urban development schemes, made these remarks during a high-level assessment meeting. According to a statement from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the review also covered issues related to infrastructure planning, water sustainability, and urban reforms.
During the meeting, Manohar Lal was briefed on the current status of the metro network in the city. At present, Bengaluru has an operational metro network spanning approximately 75 km, while another 145 km is under active construction. Earlier this year, the Union Government had sanctioned the 45-km Phase-3 corridor, approving a budget of ₹15,600 crore.

The Karnataka government has now put forward a fresh proposal for Phase-3A of the Namma Metro project. This proposed extension, covering 37 km, is estimated to cost ₹28,400 crore. However, the Minister clarified that the cost estimates for Phase-3A must undergo evaluation by an expert body before the Centre can take a decision. Directions for such an assessment have already been issued, he said.
Approval for the project hinges on a formal response from the state government. 'Once the proposal is cleared by the State Cabinet and reaches us, we will initiate the process of sanctioning,' the Minister added.
Besides metro expansion, Manohar Lal also stressed the urgent need to tackle legacy waste and promote sustainable urban practices. He underscored the importance of reusing treated wastewater to address the rising demand for fresh water in cities.
In a push for sustainable urban planning, he advocated for increased Floor Area Ratio (FAR) along public transit corridors. Allowing higher FAR, he said, would promote denser development around mass transit hubs, reduce traffic congestion, and boost public transport usage.
The Minister also encouraged the Karnataka government to implement necessary reforms to become eligible for the Centre's 'Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SSASCI)' scheme for 2025-26. Under this initiative, states can avail of a 50-year, interest-free loan for capital investments beyond existing central schemes.
It may be recalled that the Union Cabinet had already approved two key segments of Phase-2 in 2021 — Phase 2A (Central Silk Board to K.R. Puram) and Phase 2B (K.R. Puram to Kempegowda International Airport via Hebbal), which together span 58.19 km. These segments are being implemented at a combined cost of ₹14,788 crore.
Once completed, these projects are expected to significantly expand Bengaluru's public transport capacity, offering a vital solution to the city's mounting traffic and connectivity issues.

Chief Ministers of several BJP-led states took part in the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign on Wednesday and hoisted the tricolour at their residences ahead of the Independence Day celebrations. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath hoisted the tricolour at his residence and wrote on X, "The proclamation of our unity, the resolve of our integrity, the eternal symbol of our sovereignty and pride... 'Our Tricolour' Let us join the #HarGharTiranga Hind!" Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini hoisted the tricolour at his residence in Chandigarh, while Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel hoisted the flag in Gandhinagar. India achieves 100 GW domestic solar module capacity under government-approved list
NEW DELHI: As India pushes towards self-reliance in the energy transition, a total of 100 GW of solar module manufacturing capacity has been developed and included under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, highlighted the milestone on X, stating: 'India has achieved a historic milestone — 100 GW Solar PV Module Manufacturing Capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) — a remarkable rise from just 2.3 GW in 2014!' The ALMM is a registry of modules eligible for supply to government-backed and utility-scale solar projects. The listed capacities are largely indigenous, developed by domestic manufacturers. 'Driven by the visionary leadership of Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji and transformative initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar Modules, we are building a robust, self-reliant solar manufacturing ecosystem. This achievement strengthens our path towards #AtmanirbharBharat and the target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030,' Joshi added. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy first issued the ALMM order in March 2021, initially featuring around 23 manufacturers. It has been regularly updated to include more models and companies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also lauded the development, tweeting: 'This is yet another milestone towards self-reliance! It depicts the success of India's manufacturing capabilities and our efforts towards popularising clean energy.' Over recent years, the government has implemented several measures to reduce imports of solar modules from China, the world's largest supplier of equipment for solar projects. The ALMM serves as a non-tariff barrier, complementing the 40% basic customs duty on imported modules. However, due to domestic supply constraints, the ALMM mandate was deferred for a year and came into effect on 1 April 2024. Procurement of solar modules from ALMM-listed manufacturers had been temporarily suspended in FY24 to avoid impacting solar capacity additions. In a related step, the government plans to bring solar cells under the ALMM framework starting 1 June 2026. These efforts to achieve self-reliance are aligned with India's ambitious target of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030.

The former Chief Minister earlier said that a popular government must be elected at the earliest to take forward the development of the state. Patriots Day is observed every year in Manipur on August 13 to commemorate the hanging of Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General by the British on this day in 1891 for waging war against the British empire. Manipur is under President's rule. At least 258 people have been killed and over a thousand people injured in the ethnic violence in the state between the tribal Kuki-Zo and the non-tribal Meitei people since May 3, 2023. More than 60,000 people have been displaced from their homes and villages, They are staying in relief camps in different districts.
