Hyderabad: City top cop, HNEW win global laurels for anti-narcotics fight
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad City police commissioner CV Anand and HNEW (Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing) has been awarded first place in the category of 'Excellence in Anti-Narcotics' at the World Police Summit (WPS) 2025. The Commissioner will receive the award at the ceremony scheduled to be held at the Dubai Police Officers Club, Dubai, UAE on May 15.
The summit has been organised by Dubai Police and scheduled to be held from May 13-15. This accolade places Telangana and India on the global map of pioneering anti-narcotics enforcement. The WPS team formally informed Anand of his selection for first place in the Excellence in Anti-Narcotics Award category and congratulated him. 'This is a recognition of your remarkable achievements in advancing security and safety, and your efforts in promoting awareness and impactful change across communities and nations,' the WPS team conveyed. The World Police Summit is a premier global forum that brings together leading law enforcement professionals from over 138 countries, with participation from globally renowned agencies such as the FBI, NYPD, LAPD, Metropolitan Police (UK), Australian Federal Police, and the German Police, etc.
Against this highly competitive backdrop, CV Anand emerged as the top awardee, marking an extraordinary achievement not only for Telangana Police but also for the country's collective anti-narcotics efforts. Central to this recognition is the pioneering work of HNEW which has implemented a holistic approach to drug control, combining – Multi-agency coordination with ED, NCB, DRI, GST, Excise, FRRO, Drugs Control Administration, and Counter Intelligence, apart from community outreach through anti-drug committees in colleges and sustained public awareness initiatives.
The strong enforcement action lead to the busting of international and inter-state peddling networks, dark web interventions, deportation of foreign offenders, and a significant decline in drug supply. It also focused on rehabilitation, integrating support for victims of substance abuse alongside enforcement.
This global recognition is a testament to the State Government's and Hyderabad City Police's strong resolve, and the unwavering commitment and sustained efforts in combating the menace of narcotics. Chhattisgarh High Court stays transfer of Vet Officer over 'violation' of Scheduled Area posting guidelines; committee told to decide in 15 days RAIPUR: The Chhattisgarh High Court has stayed the transfer order of a deputy director of veterinary services, Balrampur-Ramanujganj, who challenged his posting to a scheduled area. The 63 year-old petitioner, through his counsel Mateen Siddiqui, contended that his transfer to Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district is contrary to the state government's guidelines for postings in such areas. The Single Bench of Justice Bibhu Datta Guru observed, 'It appears from the pleadings that the petitioner who has discharged maximum part of his duty in the scheduled area. Presently, he has been again transferred to a scheduled area which appears to be contrary to the guidelines dated 03.06.2015, hence the petitioner is directed to approach the committee constituted by the State Government on 03.03.2025 within a period of 5 days and in case the petitioner approached the said committee, the said committee shall consider the representation and grievance of the petitioner in accordance with law as well as the guidelines dated 03.06.2015 within a further period of 15 days. Till the decision of the Committee the impugned order dated 05.03.2025 shall remain stayed till the decision of the Committee.' The petitioner, who has served a significant part of his tenure in scheduled areas, argued that the transfer order dated 5 March 2025 violates the guidelines issued on 3 June 2015. The court directed the petitioner to approach a committee constituted by the State Government on 3 March 2025. This committee is tasked with reviewing transfer orders and addressing grievances. The court has instructed the committee to consider Dr. Ahmad's representation and grievance in accordance with the law and the 3 June 2015 guidelines, within 15 days. Tight security arrangements at Mega DSC Exam Centre
Puttaparthi: SP V Ratna has issued strict orders to ensure foolproof security at the Mega DSC examination centre located at Samskruti Engineering College near the Super Specialty Hospital in Puttaparthi. The Mega DSC exams commenced on Friday and will continue until June 30. As these exams are being conducted with high importance by the State Government, necessary arrangements have been made to ensure smooth and secure conduct. Under the supervision of Puttaparthi DSP Vijay Kumar, security arrangements were thoroughly reviewed. Police officials and staff were briefed on necessary precautions, including candidate checking protocols. The exam is scheduled in two sessions: from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Candidates are thoroughly checked using DFMDs, and items like mobile phones, smartwatches, and other electronic gadgets are strictly prohibited inside the examination hall. Surveillance is being conducted using CC cameras and drone cameras. Section 144 and the provisions of the 30 Police Act have been enforced around the exam centres. Vehicle movement near the exam centres is restricted to avoid any disturbances. Police authorities are taking all necessary steps to conduct the Mega DSC exams under tight security and with zero incidents.

Collective failure, selective action
On June 5, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the suspension of several police officers – from the City Police Commissioner down to the Inspector at the Cubbon Park station – in connection with the stampede near M Chinnaswamy Stadium which led to 11 deaths on Wednesday. This move may appear decisive, coming after public outrage and calls for deterrent action, but it is hasty and unjust. The suspensions were announced before a preliminary inquiry was conducted and without establishing prima facie a case of government's action is deeply unfair considering that the chaos around the celebratory events, organised in the heart of the city, was triggered elsewhere. It was the management of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) that made the original announcement of a victory parade and an event at the stadium – the State Government endorsed it. There was little room for the police to operate. The action is on the grounds of dereliction of duty, also citing the Commissioner's failure to refuse permission 'in writing'. But a technicality should not have been the basis of action announced within a day after the incident..A tragedy of bad judgement and broken government has also initiated action against the franchise management and the event organisers. However, punishing the officers without examining the decision-making chain – especially when professional advice was ignored – is both unjust and loss of 11 lives and injuries to more than 50 people had already left a bitter aftertaste on RCB's long-awaited title victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This was not only about a surging crowd of fans – this was primarily about serious administrative negligence. The decision to suspend the police officers without due process compounds this tragedy. Those very officers who worked to ensure the smooth conduct of the tournament are now being vilified for a failure that was not theirs. The suspensions also need to be viewed along with reports that senior police officials had suggested holding the event on Sunday, June 8, to allow adequate time for events of this magnitude requires detailed planning, beginning with a comprehensive security scheme: crowd estimates, personnel deployment, patrolling points, traffic management, emergency protocols, and crime prevention. Police teams need to be mobilised from across the city, or even the state. This requires travel time, extensive coordination, and clear process was not possible here. The city police were already fatigued, having managed the all-night fan revelry after the IPL final on June 3. The celebrations and the resultant traffic chaos had kept them on their feet till dawn. The next morning, they were called into action again, this time with no police personnel also had to operate in a high-security zone around the Vidhana Soudha. Managing simultaneous events at the Vidhana Soudha and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) premises demanded significant deployment and security protocols. Unfortunately, the police are already working with a skeletal force. The vacancies mean that they often struggle to meet day-to-day demands, let alone a crisis. Augmentation of force strength happens sporadically, and resources are always stretched thin..A problem of political establishment seemed eager to share the champion side's limelight. It was evident in the crowd present at the Vidhana Soudha. Considering that RCB is a privately owned entity with little organic connection to Karnataka, organising an event of this scale at the state's seat of governance was a case of serious is one of the most followed franchises in the league, with a strong fanbase that has stayed with the side through an 18-year-long wait for the first title. The team has emerged as a popular brand built on advertisements, celebrity campaigns, and marketing drives. Thousands of fans congregated at both the Vidhana Soudha and KSCA. For many, a glimpse of the team was enough. The 2-km stretch between the two locations was packed with a teeming, unregulated crowd.
