AKG Centre a hallmark of energy efficiency and eco-friendliness
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: AKG Centre, the new CPM headquarters inaugurated last week, could prove a model for others, including rival parties, for its architectural value, eco-friendliness and energy efficiency.
According to the CPM, it is the first building in Kerala to achieve the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) 4 rating from the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
An array of special interior and exterior features makes the building stand out from other modern-day structures. Environmental friendliness is its primary hallmark.
As per the party, the building, constructed in adherence to green protocol, has only 30% of its 60,000 sq ft space air-conditioned. The 11-storey solar-powered building has two underground floors just for parking and can accommodate up to 60 vehicles at a time, the party said.
'Under normal circumstances, the building can withstand even a moderate earthquake, and won't suffer cracks. There's a chain of about 220 pilings across the compound. Of these, 82 are for the main building alone,' said senior CPM leader A K Balan.
He said the entire electrical equipment has five-star rating. Odourless paint has been used, while curtains and carpets are indigenous, Balan said, adding that the building is also disabled-friendly. 'There are special water storage facilities— for rainwater harvesting and normal supply. If required, we can supply water to surrounding regions too, especially if there's a fire,' Balan said. All the furniture for the building have been procured from Rubco, a PSU.
Balan said CPM took special care to ensure that contracts for different aspects of the building was awarded through competitive bidding to avoid needless controversies. 'We can say with pride that we didn't have to take a single building rule exemption,' he said.
Spread across 32 cents at NS Warrier Road, three floors of the building have been dedicated for office works and meetings and also house conference halls. The building has facilities for the state committee office, a meeting hall for the secretariat, a space for media briefing, studio, office rooms for the politburo, central committee and state secretariat members, in addition to a modernised kitchen and accommodation for senior leaders.
It was the late Kodiyeri Balakrishnan who identified the land next to the old building while serving as the CPM state secretary and proposed the construction of the new office building. It was designed by architect Mahesh.

Left, Dalit groups protest over police torture
Rajamahendravaram: CPI, CPM, CPI (ML) New Democracy, and various Dalit rights organisations organised a protest here on Monday, condemning the police assault on Dalit and minority youth in Tenali. The protest began with floral tributes at the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. Speaking at the protest, CPI leader Tatipaka Madhu and CPM leader T Arun recalled past instances of police brutality under the previous YSRCP government, including the cases of Dr Sudhakar and driver Subrahmanyam. They stated that such incidents were a key reason people voted out the YSRCP and elected the alliance government. However, they alleged that despite a change in government, Dalits still remain unprotected, citing the latest Tenali incident as proof. The leaders said that even if the three youths were found using ganja or involved in any wrongdoing, they should have been arrested and produced before the court in accordance with the law. 'Police have no authority to beat people in public. Such acts are unconstitutional and inhuman,' they said. They strongly criticised Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha for not condemning the incident and instead defending the police action. 'It is outrageous that Dalit youth were stomped on with boots and beaten up on a road,' they said. Questioning Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's silence, the leaders said, 'He was quick to respond to remarks made against Amaravati women. Why is he silent now when Dalits are being brutally assaulted?' Dalit organisation leaders Korukonda Chiranjeevi, Jangam Subbarao, and S Vijay Kumar urged the alliance government to respect the Constitution and the rule of law. They reminded that the Supreme Court and human rights bodies have ruled against custodial torture. Chikatla Venkateswara Rao, district assistant secretary of New Democracy, demanded the immediate suspension of the Tenali CI and SI and called for a thorough investigation into the incident. Several prominent leaders, including CPI district assistant secretary K Rambabu, city secretary V Kondala Rao, assistant secretary Sappa Ramana, CPM district leaders B Pavan Poornima Raju, New Democracy leaders K Sattibabu and V Chittibabu, and CPI leaders P Lavanya, K Srinivas, and T Nageswara Rao, participated n this protest.

Nilambur: Parties protest outside various offices following electrocution of Class X student by wild boar trap
MALAPPURAM: Nilambur witnessed a wave of protests on Monday, following the electrocution of a Class X student, Ananthu. Various parties held marches targeting different government offices, each placing blame on separate authorities for the incident. The CPM staged a protest in front of the Vazhikadavu panchayat office. Politburo member A Vijayaraghavan, who led the march, accused the UDF-led panchayat administration of failing to act against the threat posed by wild boars. 'Panchayats are empowered to cull dangerous wild boars, but the Vazhikadavu panchayat has done nothing on that front. Now, the UDF is trying to politicise Ananthu's death in the name of the Nilambur by-election,' Vijayaraghavan said. Meanwhile, the UDF took out a march to the KSEB office in Nilambur. Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan, who led the protest, criticised the CPM for targeting the panchayat instead of the KSEB, which he said bore actual responsibility. The BJP also took to the streets, marching to the forest department office.

Families roll beedis, cook food while protesting for homes
Mangaluru: With the indefinite dharna launched by the families of Kuppepadavu village in the Mangaluru North constituency, seeking sites and homes, entering its 11th day on Monday, women participating in the protest turned the protest venue into their workplace to roll beedis. Muneer Katipalla, district secretary of CPM, Dakshina Kannada, said that there are hundreds of poor families without their own homes or land who have been waiting for decades, having applied to the panchayat for plots. Six years ago, in a rush before the elections, families were allocated plots and distributed title deeds to 97 families. However, even after six years of receiving the title deeds, the plots were not handed over to the families, he said. Frustrated poor families formed a protest committee under the guidance of local labour organisations and CPM members and started an indefinite protest in front of the Kuppepadavu gram panchayat. Despite holding several sit-ins and protests since Jan, justice was not served. Hence, they organised an indefinite protest, but even after 11 days, the authorities concerned have not responded to their demand, said Muneer. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "If the youth of coastal districts are engaged in heated debates over communal issues, women labourers have been on a sit-in protest for the past 11 days, demanding the distribution of approved house sites. They are fighting together without any religious bias or Hindu-Muslim conflict. The Hindu and Muslim women are rolling beedis as part of their livelihood together at the protest site. They cook and eat rice gruel from the same pot. This is truly a beautiful scene, teaching a life lesson to the people of the coastal region," he said, urging the local elected representatives to fulfil the demands of families in the village.
