Billy Joel opens up about ‘scary' brain disorder diagnosis

New York Post7 days ago
He's in an alright state of mind.
Billy Joel, 76, has opened up about his battle with normal pressure hydrocephalus after the brain disorder forced the iconic musician to cancel all his concerts through next year.
'I know a lot of people are worried about me and my health, but I'm okay,' the 'Piano Man' singer told People in an interview published on Monday, July 21. 'What I have is something very few people know about, including me, no matter how much you try to research it.'

'I'm doing my best to work with it and to recover from it,' he added.

The treatable brain disorder can affect one's hearing, vision and balance, and Joel first realized that something was wrong earlier this year when his balance was off.
'It was like being on a boat all the time,' he shared.

Despite the 'disturbing' diagnosis, Joel reassured his fans that he is doing just fine and staying positive about the future.
'It was scary, but I'm okay,' the 'New York State of Mind' singer said. 'I just wanted to let people know, don't worry about me being deathly ill or anything.'
Joel announced that he was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus in May.

He also revealed that he had to cancel all his 2025 tour because his condition was 'exacerbated by recent concert performances.'
'Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period,' the statement read. 'Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.'
'I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,' Joel added.

The 'Uptown Girl' crooner's wife, Alexis Roderick, and daughter, Alexa Ray, later took to social media to break their silence on Joel's diagnosis.
'Thank you for the outpouring of love and support,' Alexis, 43, wrote on Instagram alongside a sweet photo of herself, Joel and their two young daughters. 'We are so grateful for the wonderful care and swift diagnosis we received.'
'Bill is beloved by so many, and to us, he is a father and husband who is at the center of our world,' she added. 'We are hopeful for his recovery. We look forward to seeing you all in the future.'

Alexa Ray, who the 'Stranger' artist shares with ex-wife Christie Brinkley, also took to Instagram to show her famous father some love and support.
'We love you and we got you, Pop!' Alexa, 39, began. 'My Dad is the strongest and most resilient man I've ever known… and he's entirely committed to making a full recovery with ongoing physical-therapy treatments as he continues to regain his strength.'
Shock jock Howard Stern later insisted that Joel was 'not dying,' but the 'Movin' Out' songwriter still missed the world premiere of his new documentary, 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes,' at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival.

The two-part documentary kicked off on HBO last week and is set to finish on Friday, July 25. It covers the life and career of the legendary musician across six decades of making music.

'I think he's working on recovering, and he's resilient,' co-director Jessica Levin told The Post earlier this month regarding Joel and his health battle. 'He's a fighter.'
'It's important to him to stay around as long as he can for his children and his family,' she added. 'He cares deeply about that. He is the ultimate romantic.'

Ana De Armas Likes Instagram Post About Nicole Kidman

Ana De Armas has people talking after she was seen liking a shady Instagram post about Nicole Kidman. This week, eagle-eyed fans noticed that Ana had liked an Instagram post questioning whether Nicole got plastic surgery. The post, made in February on the Instagram account @celebmess, included what the account holder says is a 1996 photo of Nicole alongside a more recent picture of her. Also attached were screenshots from a 2007 interview where Nicole was asked about persistent stories surrounding her appearance. The piece noted that Nicole had sparked "persistent buzz over whether [she] is overly Botoxed" following her appearance at the 2006 Oscars. In the profile, Nicole denied getting any work done. "To be honest, I am completely natural," she said. "I have nothing in my face or anything. I wear sunscreen, and I don't smoke." She added, "I take care of myself. And I'm very proud to say that." Nicole's response was included in the Instagram post — right next to a doubtful meme that said, "Sure, Jan." "When you keep it real," read the caption of the post, which also hashtagged Nicole's name and included the song "Denying" by the Spice Girls. You can see Ana's Instagram account, here, among the likes. It's still there, as of publication. Needless to say, people thought it was super shady. One Reddit user wrote, "what a sick burn 🙄." Another said, "Ugh. Shaming people like this is so weird." "De Armas is wow, so horrid for this petty crap," a third fan shared, as someone else said it gave "mean girl vibes." "I see some people still haven't graduated from that high school mentality. How embarrassing at her big age of 37," a fifth user complained. Others pointed out that the pictures of Nicole also appeared to be heavily edited. "They had to edit Nicole Kidman to even give the illusion she could have aged badly," one user said, as another stated, "Whatever, Nicole always has been and still is so beautiful to me." Ana has yet to address the situation, but it comes as she and Tom Cruise continue to face dating rumors following multiple appearances together since February. In a May interview on Good Morning America, Ana addressed their relationship and insisted it was purely a "working" one. "It's so much fun," she said. A source also told People that she and Tom are "just friends." Nicole was married to Tom from 1990 to 2001 and shares two children with him: Isabella, 32, and Connor Cruise, 30. BuzzFeed has contacted reps for Ana for comment — we'll let you know if we hear back.

Coldplay Is In Its Viral Era

Coldplay's 'Sparks' and 'Yellow' reenter Billboard's Rock Streaming Songs chart, with both cuts ... More gaining ground as all things connected to the band enjoy viral moments. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JUNE 06: Chris Martin of Coldplay performs on a stop of the band's Music of the Spheres world tour at Allegiant Stadium on June 06, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by) Getty Images The past several weeks have been huge for Coldplay on the charts in a number of nations, including the United States and the United Kingdom. The group has a lot going on at the moment, as its seemingly never-ending Music of the Spheres World Tour continues, and it pushed past $1 billion in grosses last year. The pop-rock outfit has also enjoyed quite a bit of virality lately, as a decades-old tune picked up new fans on TikTok. That surge translated into success on several important rankings, and an embarrassing moment on the kiss cam at a recent show has kept the band's name in headlines. All of the attention being paid to Coldplay has led to an uptick in plays on streaming platforms. This week in America, that surge can be clearly seen on one of Billboard's streaming tallies. Coldplay appears twice on the Rock Streaming Songs chart, Billboard's ranking that details the most successful individual tracks on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, iHeartRadio, Amazon Music, and others in the U.S. Both tunes reappear after recently falling off the list. 'Sparks' is the higher-rising of the two, as it reenters at No. 19, just one space below its all-time high point. Another classic from the band, 'Yellow,' narrowly manages to break back in at No. 25. While 'Sparks' and 'Yellow' are two of Coldplay's oldest cuts, they are still relatively new to the Rock Streaming Songs chart — at least when looking at the number of weeks they've spent on the list. 'Sparks' debuted only recently, and has now lived on the tally for about a month. 'Yellow,' meanwhile, is up to 14 stays on the roster. 'Sparks' Hits a New Peak on the Alternative Streaming Chart As 'Sparks' returns to the Rock Streaming Songs chart, the track climbs again on a similar ranking, the Alternative Streaming Songs list. The Coldplay cut jumps from No. 17 to No. 12, reaching a never-before-seen peak. The same tune returns to its all-time high of No. 10 on the Hot Rock Songs ranking, thanks largely to its continued success on streaming platforms. 'Yellow' also climbs on the Alternative Streaming Songs chart, pushing from No. 24 to No. 18.

Man Tries To Relax on Lake Float—but He Has Two Golden Retrievers

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. With golden retrievers, relaxation can be an elusive thing. That didn't stop one man online from trying, though. His afternoon enjoying a peaceful float on a lake was hilariously interrupted by his two devoted goldens, whose unwavering loyalty—and perhaps a touch of "fear of missing out"—prompted an impromptu "rescue" mission. The adorable scene, captured in a viral TikTok video, has gone viral with over 2.7 million views. "'Spotted: Dad alone. On float. Without us. He looks like he needs us. Does he even have snacks? We must go rescue,'" the creator captioned the video, imagining the dogs' inner dialogue. "'Emotional support en route. Target acquired … Backup has arrived … no man left behind. No raft left afloat.'" One by one, the dogs plunged into the water, swimming toward their owner. The first golden retriever reached the inflatable and clambered aboard with a splash, followed shortly by its equally determined sibling. The result? A deflating inflatable and a man now submerged under the weight of two very loving, but heavy, golden retrievers. The creator's page says the goldens, named Whaler and Flapjack, adore swimming. "If there's water, we're in it," the profile reads. Internet viewers quickly fell in love with the dogs' earnest, if misguided, heroism in the video. TikTok users flooded the comments with laughter and relatable stories. "'Dad looks like he's resting peacefully! Must change that!'" one commenter added. "Lovely," another wrote. "How could anyone beat the love these guys have for their human?" Stock image: A tan-colored dog swims in a lake. Stock image: A tan-colored dog swims in a lake. Nataba/Getty Images Many viewers found humor in the dogs' single-minded focus on their owner—even at the expense of his relaxation: "Dad probably been out there since morning coffee trying to get some … peaceful sunlight," one person posted. The canines' approach to the "rescue" was also a source of amusement. "The funniest part was the first mud trail. Golden one has a visual on the target and has engaged. Golden two sweeping in for clean-up," a commenter said. Some viewers offered practical advice, suggesting ways to ensure the dogs' safety during their water adventures. "You should get them life jackets," one wrote. "I had one and it made my parents feel so much better and I got to swim for longer!" These golden retrievers, known for their friendly and loyal nature, seem to fully embody the spirit of "no man left behind"—even if it means sacrificing their human's peaceful float. Newsweek reached out to @ for comment via TikTok.
