Meet Eba, B.C.'s whale-poop-sniffing dog
The whale-poop-sniffing canine stands at the front of the research boat while her owners drive downwind of a path left by killer whales Eba, a scent-detection dog trained to pick up the smell of killer whale fecal matter, stands at the front of a boat on an outing to collect samples. VIA WILD ORCA Eba the dog started her life on the streets of Sacramento. Now, she spends much of her time at the front of a boat in the Salish Sea, sniffing out killer whale poop. The pair will be on Pender Island Friday evening, where Giles is scheduled to give a talk called From Poop to Policy, about what feces can tell us about the health of individual southern resident killer whales and the endangered population as a whole. Giles' sister found Eba in Sacramento and Giles adopted her, bringing her to San Juan Island, where she lives. She and her husband, Jim Rappold, trained Eba to pick up the scent of whale poop using a previously collected sample, teaching her to think of play time when she catches a whiff of the marine mammal's excrement. The whale-poop-sniffing canine stands at the front of the research boat while Giles and her husband drive downwind of a path left by killer whales. 'In a nutshell, we follow her nose to the scat sample,' Giles said. An ideal sample looks like thick pancake batter and is about the size of a saucer for a tea cup splayed out on the surface of the water, but it can also be brown and as small as a lentil, she said. Giles then scoops the poop out of the ocean using a lab-quality plastic beaker on the end of a pole, skimming the surface of the water. She decants the fecal matter into tubes, which are put into a centrifuge on the boat and spun to separate the sample from sea water. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The samples are kept in a cooler until they're back on land and put in a deep freezer. 'Those are the ones that we love the most,' she said. While there are other scientists collecting and analyzing whale poop, Giles said hers is the only team she knows of that works with a scent-detection dog. The method allows them to collect scat without getting close to the animals and disturbing them with their presence. Without the dog, collecting fecal samples generally requires following closely behind whales, but because one of the main threats to the endangered species is vessel disturbance, she doesn't want to be part of the problem, Giles said. The samples are tested for hormones indicating stress, pregnancy and nutrition, as well as toxicants. Giles also collects breath droplets hanging in the air using a drone that swoops down after a whale has exhaled and dived back down. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. 'We're trying to create individual health records. Just like you have a health record with your doctor,' she said. 'It's really trying to get a very, very clear idea of what's happening with the individual whales.' The aim is to take those individual records and look at the collective health of the southern resident killer whales, which face threats due to lack of prey, particularly Chinook salmon, physical and noise disturbance from vessels and chemicals in their environment and food chain, Giles said. 'All of that information is information that we can give to managers in Canada and in the U.S. to help drive policy to hopefully recover these whales,' she said. If the whales are healthy and thriving, it means the habitat is healthy, which is good news for people as well, she said, because any toxic chemicals affecting killer whales also affect anyone who consumes fish from the Salish Sea. Giles' talk, part of Ocean Week Victoria, runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at 4418 Bedwell Harbour Rd. Vancouver Canucks Vancouver Canucks Local News News Vancouver Canucks

Action! Derrick Henry can parlay a 2,000-yard rushing season into a movie cameo with Adam Sandler
BALTIMORE (AP) — 'King Henry' finally has the attention of 'The Waterboy.' Baltimore Ravens star running back Derrick Henry has an offer from Adam Sandler, his favorite actor, to be cast in a movie if the five-time Pro Bowl selection rushes for 2,000 yards this season. The offer grew out of Henry's appearance on radio personality Dan Patrick's show this week to discuss his $30 million, two-year contract extension. Patrick told Henry he would get him in a Sandler movie if he made NFL history with a second 2,000-yard season. Two days later, Sandler made the offer himself in a video shown to Henry on the practice field. 'That's my dawg,' a wide-smiling Henry said while watching the video. Sandler, star of 'Happy Gilmore' and the remake of 'The Longest Yard' along with 'The Waterboy,' said he was in a hotel room while filming his greeting for Henry. At one point, Sandler turned the camera to show his bulldog. 'Two thousand yards-plus this year not only gets you in a movie, but we'll have a nice dinner together and talk about Dan Patrick's facial hair and how hard it is for him to grow it,' Sandler joked in a video posted Friday. 'I love ya and keep it up.' Sandler came up during Patrick's interview with Henry because Patrick was hearing a hoodie for the soon-to-be-released 'Happy Gilmore 2.' Sandler had given Patrick the hoodie. 'Can you do me a favor?' Henry asked Patrick. 'If you ever see him again, tell him I'm a really big fan and would really love to meet him one day.' Patrick left Sandler a voice message — and Sandler responded. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. 'Dan you're a real one!' Henry later wrote on social media. Henry rushed for 2,027 yards with Tennessee in 2020, when he was an All-Pro and the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year in the fifth of his eight seasons with the Titans. Henry nearly did it again as a 30-year-old in a resurgence with the Ravens last season, when he ran for 1,921 yards. Saquon Barkley of the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles led the NFL with 2,005 yards. ___ AP NFL:

The planets indicate that if you are more open and trusting in your dealings with the world you will reap handsome rewards. Artistic activities are under especially good stars this year, so give yourself permission to try something new and exciting. The fact that some of your colleagues are refusing to move with the times is good news for you. While they are dragging their feet you can be speeding ahead and taking advantage of new technologies and new opportunities. The future is NOW. Social opportunities will come thick and fast this weekend and hopefully you will be adventurous enough to make use of them. Not only will your life be a lot of fun but some of the people you meet will become valuable contacts. Can you trust what other people tell you? That depends on how well you know them and how often you have taken their advice in the past. Generally speaking though the planets are very much in your favour, so don't be afraid to take a chance. You don't have to be assertive or aggressive to get ahead in the world, you just need to take note of the way the wind is blowing and make sure that is the direction you are travelling in too. And remember: the universe wants you to succeed. You are not about to sit on the fence and watch the world go by, not when there are so many wonderful opportunities available to you in the world at large. Ignore those who say you should be cautious and take a big leap into the unknown. You may be inclined to shoot the messenger if what you hear today is not to your liking but that would be unfair. If anything you should thank them for making sure you are up to speed with what is going on. Knowledge is power. As mind planet Mercury moves into the career area of your chart this weekend this is the perfect time to figure out what your ambitions are going to be for the next few months, maybe even for the rest of the year. Dream the impossible dream. You may be somewhat reserved by nature but with the planets about to move in your favour you need to get out into the world and make things happen. Act as if you are super confident and others will believe it and treat you with extra respect. You may be tempted to wave the big stick and order those who are subordinate to you to do this and do that but there is really no need. They will be more than happy to follow your instructions if you stay calm and ask nicely. Cosmic activity in and around your opposite sign makes this the ideal time to get friends and family members together for a serious chat about how you can help each other now and in the future. Never forget that you are on the same team. You appear to believe that someone is out to make life difficult for you, but according to the planets that isn't so. In fact, if you adopt a pleasant attitude with everyone you meet you may be surprised to learn just how many friends you have got. Any differences of opinion you have with partners and colleagues can and must be put behind you over the next 48 hours. With luck planet Jupiter moving in your favour early next week minor disagreements cannot be allowed to come between you. Discover more about yourself at
