Dhofar readies for biggest Khareef with 100 hotels for 100 days of tourism

Times of Oman11-06-2025
MUSCAT: Dhofar Governorate is preparing to host its most ambitious Khareef season yet, with 100 licensed tourism establishments (hotels) ready to serve visitors over an extended 100-day period, from 21 June to 10 October.
The 2025 Khareef marks a milestone not only in infrastructure but also in the duration of the season, which has been extended by nearly three weeks compared to last year's conclusion on 21 September.
To accommodate growing tourist demand, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has inaugurated several key projects ahead of the season.
These include the Dhofar Private Museum, a new 84-room three-star hotel in Mirbat, and a luxury serviced apartment complex in Salalah offering 216 rooms.
A newly opened tourist information centre at Al Haffa Beach Market aims to streamline visitor services. With these additions, Dhofar now boasts over 8,000 hotel rooms after the latest opening of the 100th hotel, significantly enhancing the region's ability to cater to both domestic and international visitors during the peak monsoon months.
Extended season, expanded strategy
Khalid Abdullah Al Abri, Director General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate, emphasised the strategic importance of the Khareef season.
'This is more than a seasonal influx — it's a cornerstone of Oman's tourism calendar. Extending the season to 100 days gives us more room to welcome visitors and promote sustainable tourism,' he said.
The ministry has structured the season into three distinct phases: an early period starting 21 June, a peak season from mid-July to late August, and a post-peak stretch until 10 October. This staggered approach is designed to manage crowd flow and maximise the tourism window, including during school holidays and shoulder periods.
Targeted promotions and connectivity
As part of its tourism growth strategy, the ministry has conducted an aggressive promotional campaign across key markets.
This includes participation in Arab Travel Market 2025 in Dubai, where Dhofar Municipality unveiled this year's Khareef programme. Additional workshops and roadshows in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait highlighted Dhofar's offerings and new direct flight routes.
Airlines including Flynas, Flyadeal, Kuwait Airways, and Jazeera Airways have added seasonal direct connections to Salalah Airport, greatly enhancing access from the GCC region.
Al Abri noted that the ministry is particularly focused on attracting GCC families and repeat visitors, with special travel packages and school holiday-aligned promotions now in place.
The extended season and new infrastructure build on the momentum of Khareef 2024, which saw 1,048,000 visitors, a 9% increase from 2023 when the arrival was 962,000 visitors.
Officials are optimistic that the 2025 season will surpass this, driven by improved air connectivity, diversified offerings, and broader international visibility.
Collaborations with private sector partners are also expected to play a major role in offering competitive experiences throughout the season, even during traditionally lower-traffic periods.
With 100 hotels, 100 days, and a refreshed focus on sustainable growth, Khareef 2025 is poised to cement Dhofar's status as a premier regional destination for nature, culture, and monsoon magic.

An integrated destination for Khareef Dhofar Season

SALALAH: Tourism and entertainment projects are a vital support for Khareef Dhofar Season, monsoon season, as they provide comprehensive destinations that meet the needs of visitors, boost economic and commercial activity; and open up broader horizons for investment and the employment of national talent. These destinations are particularly important during the Khareef Dhofar Season, as they serve as attractions for visitors from within and outside the Sultanate of Oman. They offer a mix of cultural, recreational and commercial experiences while also encouraging entrepreneurship; and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which positively impacts the local economy and the sustainability of tourism. Samharam Resort is one such destination for the 2025 Khareef Dhofar Season. It provides integrated facilities and services that combine shopping, dining; and cultural and recreational activities, attracting visitors of all ages. Mohammed bin Ahmed al Hadri, a site supervisor at Samharam Resort, said the resort hosts a consumer exhibition organised by Al Awail Company for the Management and Organisation of International Exhibitions and Festivals. The exhibition features 150 to 160 shops from various Arab and foreign countries, with diverse pavilions to meet visitor needs. Additionally, a handicrafts section includes about 28 shops for SMEs and low-income individuals, supervised by the SME Development Authority (Riyada). He added that the outdoor area includes a variety of restaurants, cafes and games for both children and adults. There is also a stage that hosts children's competitions and artistic performances. He noted that the "Rifle" section features cafes, many of which are managed by Omani youth and enjoys a wide turnout from visitors. Musallam bin Abdulsalam Al Rawas, owner of Sar Events Company, stated that this is the first year the "Rifle" event is being held at the resort, marking its third consecutive year during Khareef Dhofar Season. He explained that the event includes a large selection of restaurants, a family and youth entertainment area and a stage with Omani and Gulf performances, in addition to hosting talented artists from Oman and other GCC countries. He added that the event offers various competitions for all ages and annually employs young Omanis who are job seekers and freelancers. He noted that the number of employees this year exceeded 45 young people, with a public turnout that reflects the event's success as a recreational destination during the Khareef season. Regarding visitor impressions, Sufyan bin Ghassan al Rashdi from Al Dakhiliyah Governorate said Samharam Resort is an outstanding tourist destination for families and visitors. The variety of modern facilities and events creates a joyful atmosphere that enhances the pleasure of the visit. He emphasised the importance of increasing public facilities in the future to accommodate the large turnout. Ahmed bin Ali al Saadi from Musandam Governorate explained that his recent visit to Khareef Dhofar Season introduced him to the notable development in tourist and recreational events, with a diversity of programmes and integrated services that make the tourist experience more exceptional. Meanwhile, Mohammad al Sai'ari, a tourist from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, pointed out that the events and activities at Samharam Resort are a unique addition to Khareef Dhofar Season, combining entertainment and education. He expressed his admiration for the consumer exhibition, which features various local products such as incense and perfumes, along with offers that provide visitors with a pleasant shopping experience in an organised and attractive atmosphere.

Khareef's call draws bikers back to Salalah

Salalah – Khareef season in southern Oman is attracting a diverse mix of visitors, including a growing number of bikers from across the region. Among them is Trails and Dust, a Dubai-based biking group, which this week completed its annual tour to Salalah. Formed five years ago, Trails and Dust has built a reputation for bringing together motorcycling enthusiasts from different backgrounds. The group not only rides together every weekend, but also rents bikes, equipment, and tools, and organises guided rides for riders of all skill levels. 'This ride is not just about adventure. It's about friendship, brotherhood and the joy of coming together, no matter from where you are or to what culture you belong. On the road, we're all one family,' said George Osorio, the group's leader. The Salalah trip is the highlight of the year for the group, planned to coincide with khareef when cooler weather, lush landscapes and winding mountain roads make the journey both scenic and rewarding. Osorio said preparations begin weeks in advance, with bikes serviced and safety gear checked to ensure a smooth ride. The road to Salalah brings its own challenges – long hours of riding, unpredictable weather and occasional mechanical problems – but the group sees these as part of the experience. 'It is always a pleasure to have bikers from around the world of different nationalities join us,' Osorio said. Trails and Dust has also grown its network through an online registration platform, attracting newcomers who want to experience the camaraderie and freedom of the open road. The group's next big event will be on August 15 and 16, with 15 members confirmed to take part in what is expected to be their largest single ride of the season. Osorio called it 'a fitting celebration of our shared passion, marking another milestone in our journey'.
