Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA), in partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni's Department of Development Planning and Real Estate, hosted a certification and equipment handover ceremony in June. The event recognised 113 informal traders who have successfully completed enterprise development training under the Township Economy Revitalisation Programme.
The training programme, delivered by the City of Ekurhuleni, focused on critical areas such as customer service, financial management, and business operations. This initiative has helped enhance the traders' business acumen, professionalism, and financial literacy.
Each of the 104 qualifying traders received essential Coca-Cola-branded business equipment, including a trolley, umbrella, and uniform. The total investment from CCBSA amounted to R936 000. Beneficiaries have also been connected to dedicated CCBSA distributors, ensuring access to stock, delivery, and ongoing supply chain support.
CCBSA's involvement in the Township Economy Revitalisation Programme is part of a strategic approach to drive inclusive economic growth and uplift informal traders.
'Our involvement in this programme reflects our commitment to uplifting informal traders and build stronger, more resilient local economies,' said Michael Tsholo, Commercial general Manager of CCBSA in Gauteng. 'By equipping informal traders with skills and tools, we're not just enabling commerce but supporting the future of Ekurhuleni's communities.'

eThekwini maps revised plan for Go!Durban

A REVISED map of getting the multi-billion rand Integrated Public Transport Network (IPTN), GO!Durban, working has been tabled before the eThekwini Municipality executive committee by the eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA). ETA acting director Nelisiwe Zama said the revised strategy marks a decisive move forward toward delivering a 'world-class public transport system that works for all'. Among the revised plans presented by ETA was that in sections where dedicated roadways have not yet been completed, GO!Durban will operate a scheduled bus service in mixed traffic. These services will use the same GO!Durban-branded fleet and integrated fare management system, ensuring consistency across the IPTN. Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said, 'This revision is a direct response to the delays, which, among others, included the 2021 impasse in the minibus taxi and bus industry negotiations, the need to better align with National Department of Transport priorities, and the financial and operational lessons from earlier phases of developing the system. Once the remaining dedicated roadways are completed, these services will transition accordingly.' Also Read: 'eThekwini remains in good financial standing' She said that the revised strategy realigns the programme with national frameworks, accelerates short-term delivery, and places greater emphasis on inclusive stakeholder participation and long-term sustainability. 'ETA will now proceed with the implementation of a thorough engagement process with all key stakeholders. This will include regional briefings and discussions with affected mini-bus taxi and bus operators of phase one routes of the network,' said Sisilana. Italy fines fast-fashion giant Shein for 'green' claims

The AGCM watchdog accuses the China-founded fast-fashion colossal of having "adopted a misleading communication strategy regarding the characteristics and environmental impact of its clothing products". Image: File picture Italy's competition watchdog said Monday it has fined the company responsible for Shein's websites in Europe one million euros ($1.15 million) for false and confusing claims about the e-commerce giant's efforts to be environmentally "green". The AGCM watchdog accuses the China-founded fast-fashion colossal of having "adopted a misleading communication strategy regarding the characteristics and environmental impact of its clothing products". The fine was imposed on Infinite Styles Services Co. Ltd, the company responsible for managing Shein's product trading websites in Europe, the authority said in a statement. The AGCM accused it of "misleading and/or deceptive environmental messages and claims... in the promotion and sale of Shein-branded clothing products". These were "in some instances, vague, generic, and/or overly emphatic, and in others, misleading or omissive". In particular, claims about the recyclability of products "were found to be either false or at least confusing", it said. Consumers could easily be led to believe Shein products were made exclusively from sustainable materials and fully recyclable, "a statement which, given the fibres used and current recycling systems, does not reflect reality". The AGCM also took issue with the retailer's claims it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2030 and reach zero emissions by 2050. Video Player is loading. In a statement to AFP, Shein said it had "cooperated fully" with the watchdog's investigation and "took immediate action" to address the concerns, saying all environmental claims on the website were now "clear, specific and compliant with regulations". Environmentalists have long warned of the damage wreaked by the fast-fashion sector's wasteful trend of mass-producing low-cost clothes that are quickly thrown away. Fast fashion uses up massive amounts of water, produces hazardous chemicals and clogs up landfills in poor countries with textile waste, while also generating greenhouse gases in production, transport and disposal

eThekwini Transport Authority presents new vision for GO!Durban network

One of the Go! Durban bus stations in the city. The project has been stalled for several years. The eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA) has embarked on a critical journey to redefine its Integrated Public Transport Network (IPTN) under the GO!Durban programme, presenting a revised strategy aimed at overcoming key challenges in its implementation. In its efforts to address setbacks, including the prolonged negotiations within the minibus taxi and bus industries that stalled progress in 2021, the ETA's new strategy reflects a proactive realignment with national priorities and frameworks. "The revised plan was shaped through extensive engagements and collaboration with government stakeholders, focusing on ensuring that the rollout aligns seamlessly with the overarching objectives of the National Department of Transport," the City said. According to Nelisiwe Zama, Acting Director of ETA, this updated approach is pivotal to the maturation of a world-class public transport system that prioritises inclusivity and sustainability. 'We are determined to deliver this vision through robust partnerships with other government sectors, public transport stakeholders, communities, and potential users of the system,' she commented. As part of the revised strategy, the ETA aims to accelerate short-term delivery plans while ensuring long-term viability. Where dedicated roadways are yet to be operational, GO!Durban will initiate quality, scheduled bus services within mixed traffic conditions. Zama explained that these will utilise the distinctive GO!Durban-branded fleet and integrated fare management system, providing users with a seamless experience across the IPTN. As dedicated roadways come online, the existing services will be transitioned smoothly, maintaining consistency for commuters. This plan is a testament to the commitment of the ETA to ensure that public transport remains accessible and user-friendly for all citizens. In the coming days, ETA will initiate an in-depth engagement process with all relevant stakeholders, including regional briefings and discussions with affected minibus taxi and bus operators specific to phase one routes of the network.
