Yamunanagar court delivers 7-year sentence in minor girl's harassment case within 5 months 25 days
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Ranjana Aggarwal in Yamunanagar has sentenced
Shahbaz Khan
alias Ashu (35) to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh for committing obscene acts and harassing a 14-year-old minor girl to forcibly befriend a boy.
The judgment was delivered on Thursday, just five months and 25 days after the complaint was filed.
According to public prosecutor Gurudev Tandon, the case dates back to an incident in the Hamida area under Yamunanagar City Police Station jurisdiction. A 14-year-old girl received a phone call that visibly distressed her. When her father inquired, she revealed that a man had been continuously harassing her and coercing her into forming a friendship with a boy, who belongs to another community.
Recognizing the seriousness of the matter, her father promptly lodged a police complaint. The father reported that on November 18, 2024, he overheard a conversation between his daughter and her friend in which it was revealed that a man had been stalking, harassing, and forcing the girl into a friendship. The girl further disclosed that the accused had made obscene gestures and threatened to kill her if she informed her parents.

ASDJ Ranjana Aggarwal said in her order, 'The convict has committed extremely serious offences. These kinds of offences, if allowed to continue unchecked, have the potential to jeopardize the sovereignty and integrity of our country.'
Taking swift action, the police launched an investigation led by Woman ASI Meenakshi. A thorough scientific investigation was conducted, and the prosecution presented strong evidence in court.
The case was closely monitored under the "Operation Conviction" initiative, with a dedicated monitoring cell ensuring effective legal follow-up.
The police recorded the minor girl's statement before a magistrate and arrested the accused, identified as Shahbaz Khan alias Ashu. The court is also handling a separate case related to the juvenile boy involved in the coercion attempt.
Prosecutor Tandon stated that the court had already found Shahbaz guilty in the case, and the sentencing was announced on Thursday.
The court imposed sentences under Section 8 (punishment for sexual assault) with 17 (punishment for abetment) and 12 (punishment for sexual harassment) with 17 of the POCSO Act and 351 (2) (criminal ) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: four years, two years, and one year respectively. The terms will run consecutively, meaning the convict will serve each sentence one after the other.
Tandon further revealed that Shahbaz had faced a similar accusation earlier, but the case had collapsed due to witnesses withdrawing their statements.
However, in the present case, the minor stood firm in her testimony before the magistrate, and her family members and other witnesses remained consistent in their statements, leading to the conviction.
Calling it a landmark judgment, Tandon praised the judiciary for delivering justice in under six months—a rare feat in such cases. This ruling is seen as a strong message against harassment of minors and a testament to the importance of prompt and fearless witness testimonies.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday said it has found that Chhangur Baba, being investigated in a money-laundering case linked to an alleged illegal religious conversion racket in Uttar Pradesh, had received funds worth Rs 60 crore in 22 bank accounts, including "large amounts" from abroad. The federal probe agency said this in a statement after it concluded searches at more than a dozen locations in Chhangur Baba's native Balrampur district and two places in Mumbai. Chhangur Baba, his son Mehboob and alleged associates Naveen Rohra alias Jamaluddin and Neetu alias Nasreen were arrested by the ATS. They are currently lodged in jail. The ATS complaint alleges a "large-scale" conspiracy involving unlawful religious conversions, utilisation of foreign funds and activities posing a potential threat to national security. Live Events "Chhangur Baba and his associates are alleged to have established an extensive network operating from the premises of the Chand Auliya Dargah in Balrampur, where he regularly organised large gatherings attended by both Indian and foreign nationals. "He is accused of systematically inducing, coercing and manipulating individuals of other faiths, particularly Scheduled Castes and economically disadvantaged persons belonging to Hindu religion, into religious conversion," the ED said. The agency said it has analysed 22 bank accounts related to Chhangur Baba and his associates and it was found that funds worth more than Rs 60 crore were received by him and his associates. "It was also found that a large amount of funds has been received from foreign countries by Chhangur Baba and his associates," it said. The searches also led to the seizure of a number of documents that show that "proceeds of crime" (illicit funds) were majorly transferred to different people for purchasing a number of immovable properties worth crores of rupees and carrying out construction activities in these properties. All the immovable assets acquired by Chhangur Baba are in the names of his associates, Naveen Rohra and Neetu Rohra, to conceal his actual involvement in money laundering, the ED said. Following the arrest of Chhangur Baba, alleged illegal constructions linked to him in Balrampur were razed by the district administration. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had described the actions of the accused as not only anti-social but also "anti-national". Economic Times WhatsApp channel )

Fake Call Centre Scammed Foreigners, Busted. Assets Attached By Enforcement Directorate
New Delhi: The Patna zonal office of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached movable and immovable properties worth approximately Rs 2.83 crore under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. The attachment is linked to a transnational cyber fraud racket involving fake call centres operated by Sagar Yadav and his Kolkata-based companies - Scrapix Consultancy Services Pvt Ltd and Casanovus Reality Pvt Ltd. The attached assets include land parcels, flats, and fixed deposits, acquired using proceeds of crime generated through cyber fraud targeting foreign nationals. The investigation was initiated following a tip-off received by the ED from the National Central Bureau (NCB)-India (CBI), which had been alerted by NCB-Ireland. The case involved fraud committed on an Irish national, Carmel Fox, and was registered under the "cross-border Implication" category as per Section 2(1)(ra) of the PMLA. The ED's probe revealed that the accused had been running fake call centres to defraud international victims. The illicit funds were funneled into India through channels like Western Union, Moneygram, Rewire, Remitly, and even cryptocurrencies. These funds were then laundered through peer-to-peer lending platforms including Lenden Club, Lendbox, and Liquiloans. Two immovable properties bought in the names of Scrapix Consultancy and Casanovus Reality worth Rs 2.67 crore, along with fixed deposits of Rs 15.75 lakh have been placed under provisional attachment. So far, the ED has arrested seven individuals including mastermind Sagar Yadav and has filed one prosecution complaint and two supplementary complaints against him, his companies, and associates. Further investigation is ongoing.

BJP slams Rahul for accusing Govt of targeting Vadra
New Delhi, July 18 (UNI) The BJP on Thursday slammed leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for accusing the Centre of targeting his brother-in-law, Robert Vadra, calling his remarks a reflection of the Congress' 'Emergency-era mindset' and a disregard for due legal process. Gandhi had alleged that the government was carrying out a political witch hunt against Vadra following the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filing a chargesheet against him in a money-laundering case related to alleged irregularities in a land deal in Shikohpur, Haryana. Addressing a press conference here, party spokesperson Tuhin Sinha said Rahul's comments revealed not only his support for Vadra but also his potential complicity in the alleged wrongdoing. 'With his statement, Rahul Gandhi has made it evident that he was fully aware of his brother-in-law's murky dealings — and perhaps even involved,' Sinha said. The BJP leader also referred to the National Herald case, in which Rahul Gandhi is currently out on bail, alleging that it too involves a suspicious financial trail. 'Instead of attributing political motives, Robert Vadra should be answering questions about his modus operandi. And let's not forget the National Herald case, in which Rahul Gandhi is on bail, involves a hawala money trail. The Gandhi family owes the country an explanation,' Sinha added. Citing the ED chargesheet, the BJP noted that Vadra's company reportedly had only Rs 1 lakh at the time of executing the controversial land deal raising questions about how such a transaction was possible without prior political knowledge or involvement. The BJP also hit out at Gandhi's recent comments made during a public meeting in Assam's Chaygaon, where he said that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, 'who thinks he is a king,' would be jailed by the people of the state for corruption. Calling it a "threat" to a sitting chief minister, Sinha said Gandhi's remark was not only undemocratic but also displayed a lack of respect for the legal process. 'Someone who so brazenly threatens to have an elected Chief Minister arrested, without any legal basis, cannot be expected to respect judicial and investigative institutions,' Sinha said. 'There is not a single allegation against Himanta Biswa Sarma. This kind of rhetoric shows the Congress continues to operate with the same authoritarian mindset it did during the Emergency.' On the issue of alleged political interference in investigations, Sinha also dismissed Congress claims of vendetta in the case involving Bhupesh Baghel's son, saying that elections cannot be a reason to halt or delay legal proceedings. 'Elections happen regularly in India. That doesn't mean investigating agencies need to seek political approval before acting,' he said. UNI AJ PRS
