‘From 33% To 50%': At SheShakti, CM Fadnavis Says Women's Representation Will Rise Beyond Quotas
At the News18 SheShakti West summit in Mumbai, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said India's women-led transformation in politics is entering a new phase and that the next decade will see them surpass the 33% reservation mandated by the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
He said that the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, passed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's second term, is a landmark reform. 'The maturity of our democracy and of our women has brought us here. Sometimes the law forces us to act, but once people see the change, they understand it was the right thing to do."
'In 2029, when it becomes compulsory to give tickets to women, I don't think we will stop at 33%. Within ten years, it will be 50%," Fadnavis said, in conversation with Palki Sharma, Managing Editor at Network18.
The BJP stalwart, who first won a municipal election in 1992, recalled how the initial wave of reservations for women in local bodies often led to male relatives operating behind the scenes. 'At that time, women had 33% of the seats. But many were stand-ins. The terms 'sarpanch-pati' and 'corporator-pati' came into existence because men felt it was their role," he said.
But a shift began around 1997, he added. 'Women started performing in those roles. By 2002, that completely changed." Today, Fadnavis said, Maharashtra's civic bodies reflect the shift. 'We have 50% reservation, but in many corporations and panchayats, women's representation is at 52–55%, even in unreserved seats."
Despite this progress at the grassroots, he acknowledged that women remain underrepresented in Parliament. 'When we meet to decide tickets, our party makes it a point to prioritise women candidates. But the problem is, we still don't have enough contenders."
Fadnavis also spoke about workplace reforms in Maharashtra. 'In 2015, we amended night shift rules. Women can now work night shifts, but pickup, drop and safety is the employer's responsibility," he said.
Corporate India, he noted, is moving ahead of regulations. 'I meet business owners who tell me 30–40% of their workforce are women. They've done it without being told to. They say women are sincere, don't fight, and there are no strikes," he quipped, drawing laughter from the audience.
'Industries are realising that women increase workforce efficiency," he said. 'We will bring regulation if needed, but so far, we haven't had to."

PUNE : Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday said that if local 'dadagiri' and interference continue, Pune would lose its leadership role in the industrial sector. He reminded Punekars that Sambhajinagar is already emerging as the new EV capital and in all likelihood will go ahead of Pune. Fadnavis said that this can be achieved only if the socio-political system for industries undergoes change. 'We cannot ask them to work under pressure. Pune has a lot of potential but other centres like Sambhajinagar and Nagpur are fast emerging. Industries are going there even though Pune's biggest capital is manpower and innovation. Hence, the city should concentrate on innovation. Sambhajinagar is the leading EV capital and very soon, it will cross Pune,' he added. Niti Aayog's chief executive officer V R Subramanyham spoke about Pune's advantages, potential, and the weak points it needs to tackle to become a world-class city. 'The central government has already identified and started work for four economic growth hubs and the project implementations have started. Now, we are going to declare five more economic growth hubs, including Pune and Katak. Pune is leading in manufacturing, IT, automobile and education but there are many more sectors which have a lot of potential. For example, agri processing and urban tourism.' He also touched on poor public transport, road network, less open spaces, and traffic issues, calling them hindrances to Pune's growth. Earlier, the chief minister had announced with regard to infrastructure that his government is planning a new Airport Road and a Ring Road. 'It would create more positive impact for the city. Earlier, land and capital used to attract industries but nowadays, industries are going where skilled manpower is available,' he said. Fadnavis also said that to meet global standards, a place need to have ease of business and hassle-free policies. 'Government needs to change its mindset and approve the required permissions within a timeframe. Execution of project on time is important, otherwise the projects become generation projects which keep on progressing but with no output,' he added.

Kolhapur to get fourth bench of Bombay High Court from August 18
Mumbai: In a landmark development for western Maharashtra, the state government on Friday issued a notification announcing the establishment of a fourth bench of the Bombay High Court in Kolhapur. The circuit bench will become operational from August 18, 2025, following the appointment of judges by the High Court. The bench will provide significant assistance in making the administration of justice more efficient. Moreover, it will also save the time, effort, and money of the citizens. The bench will cater to the districts of Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, benefiting citizens who had struggled for many years for this facility. The order, signed by chief justice Alok Aradhe and issued with the approval of the Governor of Maharashtra, states, 'In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (3) of section 51 of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, and all other powers enabling me in this behalf... I appoint Kolhapur as a place at which Judges and Division Courts of the High Court may also sit, with effect from August 18, 2025.' Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the move, calling it a 'long-pending demand' from the region. 'The High Court has approved the establishment of a judicial circuit bench in Kolhapur, which will cater to six districts . This will significantly ease the burden on litigants by saving them time, money and effort,' he said. Currently, the Bombay High Court operates from its principal seat in Mumbai, with three additional benches — in Nagpur, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (formerly Aurangabad), and Goa. For over two decades, residents and lawyers from western Maharashtra and parts of the Konkan region have been demanding a dedicated bench, citing the hardship of travelling to Mumbai for court proceedings. 'This is a historic moment. Justice will now be delivered at the doorstep of people in the region,' said senior advocate Rajiv Chavan, former president of the Advocates Association of Western India.

Arrest of nuns in Chhattisgarh: Rajeev Chandrasekhar meets Thrissur Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath
THRISSUR: BJP state chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Friday visited Thrissur Archbishop and president of Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), Mar Andrews Thazhath, and assured all support for the release of two Malayali nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh. Speaking to the press after the meeting, Mar Thazhath said this was not the first case of arrest involving nuns. There should be a mechanism to ensure justice for the nuns who conduct social work and charity. He added that the Church welcomed the support extended by all, irrespective of political inclinations. Minority rights should be protected across the country, he said. 'The BJP has been following up the case since the moment it was brought to our notice. Judiciary and the legal system will take their own time. But, it is assured that the Chhattisgarh government would not oppose the nuns' bail plea when it comes up before the court. Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah had personally communicated it to me, and I visited Mar Andrews Thazhath to communicate this to him,' Rajeev said. It was a misunderstanding which led to the arrest of the nuns, he said. Two nuns Vandana Francis and Preeta Mary were arrested by Durg police as they were accompanied by tribal girls from Chhattisgarh. They were accused of human trafficking and conversion. However, it is reported that the girls were taken out of their homes for jobs with their consent as they were above 18 years and with their parents' knowledge. The girls follow Christian faith. However, while taking human resources from Chhattisgarh, agents or employers are supposed to register it on a portal even if it is within the state. 'In this case, this registration was not done,' he added.
