Proton to launch second EV model in Q4

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd's wholly-owned Proton New Energy Technology (Pro-Net) is set to launch its newest electric vehicle (EV) model called e.MAS 5 in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Pro-Net chief branding officer Salawati Mohd Yusoff said the latest EV differs from its first model, the e.MAS 7, in terms of segment as the former EV is a compact sport utility vehicle (C-SUV), while the e.MAS 5 falls under the B-segment hatchback category.
"Thus, in terms of size, the e.MAS 5 is much more compact than the e.MAS7. We will be offering five different colour options for this model.
"In terms of pricing, we cannot reveal it just yet, but our e.MAS models are generally priced above RM100,000. We hope to position the price of the newest EV slightly better and more affordable," she told Bernama at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025 on Thursday.
The e.MAS 5 will be available in two variants - the Prime model with a range of 345 kilometres (km), and the Premium variant, offering a range of up to 410km.
Pro-Net is confident that the latest EV will be well received in the market, given the encouraging response to its first EV model, as Malaysians have shown growing interest and openness towards switching to EVs.
To date, a total of 2,700 units of e.MAS 7 have been sold since its initial launch in December last year, Salawati said.

187,652 individuals with debts get second chance

KUALA LUMPUR: At least 187,652 individuals with debts not exceeding RM200,000 have been freed from a life of bankruptcy from March 2023 until June 2025 as part of the government's Second Chance Policy, says M. Kulasegaran. The Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) said this included young adults under the age of 40. 'This achievement is proof of the government's push to implement reforms that deliver direct impact to the people. 'Through this effort, we have not just freed the people from the burden of debt, we have also helped to restore their self-worth, giving them a new chapter in life,' he said during the Ministry Question Time in Parliament yesterday. Kulasegaran said the government hopes this move will serve as a fresh start for Malaysians to move forward in their daily lives. 'It aims to provide a second chance to those in the early and mid stages of their careers, who are important assets to the nation, so they can recover and actively contribute again to the family and national economy,' he added.

Published on: Thursday, August 14, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 14, 2025 By: Cynthia D Baga Text Size: Anita and Ang, both wearing face masks, leaving the court. KOTA KINABALU: A husband-and-wife business duo have claimed trial to charges of abetting a company director in submitting false claims amounting to more than RM3.6 million to the Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR). Anita Mohamed, 54, and Ang Ka Fat @ Kenny, 57, pleaded not guilty to their respective charges when brought before Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga on Thursday. Both face two separate charges each, as well as one joint charge, over the alleged offences. The charges were framed under Section 28(1)(c) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, read together with Section 18 of the same Act, and punishable under Section 24(2). Upon conviction, the provision carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence and a fine of at least five times the value of the false particulars, or RM10,000, whichever is higher. The documents were allegedly submitted to an administrative assistant at the DIDR office between 2022 and 2023. The court set Sept 23 for pre-trial case management and released both on bail, with counsel Azhier Farhan Arisin representing them. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
