TAWAU: Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Ewon Benedick said Malaysia's victory in the international court over the Sulu group's claim case against Sabah stands as a legacy of the Madani Government's success under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said that as a Federal Minister, he was truly proud to be part of the cabinet that had secured the victory in Malaysia's favour. 'On behalf of the Sabah leadership and the people of Sabah, we extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the Federal Government, under the leadership of the Prime Minister, for establishing a special task force led by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, to address the Sulu claim brought by certain parties in several foreign courts. 'We have achieved victory, and this proves that the Sulu claim is unfounded. This is a significant success achieved by the Madani Government...I am sure the people of Sabah will appreciate it,' he said. He told reporters this after attending the Pocket Talk Session of the Legal Affairs Division, Prime Minister's Department, entitled Malaysia's Victory in the Sulu Claim, which was presented by the Director of the International Relations Section of the BHEUU, JPM, Irianie Abdul Wahab, in conjunction with the Sabah Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 here today. Eight Filipino nationals claiming to be heirs of the now-defunct Sulu Sultanate had filed arbitration proceedings in Spain to demand billions of US dollars from Malaysia over issues involving Sabah. In March 2019, a court in Madrid appointed Dr Gonzalo Stampa as the arbitrator for the case. On Feb 28, 2022, Stampa ruled in favour of the group and issued a Final Award of USD14.9 billion through an unlawful arbitration process, despite his appointment having already been annulled by a Spanish court. Malaysia has since secured a series of legal victories in the case, including in November last year, when the French Supreme Court fully rejected the group's legal challenge. Ringgit opens higher against US$ amid tariff concerns
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit rebounded to open higher against the US dollar on Monday, as markets assessed the outlook for US President Donald Trump's tariff policy, an analyst said. At 8.03 am, the local note rose to 4.2165/2490 against the greenback from Friday's close of 4.2530/2605. At the opening, the ringgit traded mixed against a basket of major currencies and ASEAN peers. It appreciated against the British pound to 5.7134/7574 from Friday's close of 5.7284/7385, but weakened versus the Japanese yen to 2.9567/9799 from 2.9531/9585, and slipped against the euro to 4.8270/8643 from 4.8169/8254. Against ASEAN currencies, the ringgit inched up against the Philippine peso to 7.57/7.63 from 7.62/7.64, but slipped versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2808/3066 from Friday's close of 3.2938/3002 and eased against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.4/261.5 from 260.4/261.1. - Bernama

Diplomatic corps praises King's role in national unity

Yemen's Ambassador to Malaysia, Dr Adel Mohamed Ba Hamid, commended Sultan Ibrahim's steadfast support for Malaysia's chairmanship of Asean this year, including His Majesty's role in strengthening Malaysia's voice on the regional stage. Adel Mohamed also acknowledged His Majesty's consistent message of inclusivity and harmony, particularly the call for Malaysians to embrace unity in diversity, a timely appeal amid rising global polarisation. 'Under Your Majesty's guidance, Malaysia has continued to enjoy political stability. This stability enables the government to plan for the long term and seize emerging opportunities in the green and digital economies to create high-quality jobs for Malaysians,' he said. King: Always put unity first
KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has reminded leaders not to politicise sensitive issues that could fuel discord within the society and threaten the nation's stability. His Majesty stated that the existence of more political parties or factions within parties could lead to widening rifts among the people, resulting in escalating enmity among them. 'Use your wisdom before making any decisions. There is no greater gift to me than a united rakyat. 'I have mentioned before that there is a 'virus' that will strike our nation. 'Now, this virus has begun to spread and cannot be cured. I often speak of this so that we do not easily forget,' His Majesty said. Sultan Ibrahim was speaking during the royal address at the investiture ceremony for 2025 in conjunction with His Majesty's official birthday celebration at Istana Negara, reported Bernama. 'Loyalty does not mean worship, but honesty and trust in carrying out the duties and responsibilities given, and not betraying the country and the people's trust,' said His Majesty. The King stressed that civil servants must be free from the influence of political parties, be neutral, and always prioritise the interests of the country and the people. 'Government officials must ensure that every decision made is in accordance with the conditions and regulations set, not according to the dictates of politicians. 'Every expenditure must also be closely controlled and cannot be used as desired by ministers or MPs to fish for votes, to the point of causing the government's debt to increase,' said the King. Sultan Ibrahim also called on all enforcement agencies to carry out their duties with full integrity so that the people do not lose trust and continue to respect the uniform they wear.
