UNC basketball won't pursue talented shooting guard
UNC basketball won't pursue talented shooting guard UNC is out on this transfer portal shooting guard The North Carolina Tar Heels are still seeking a few additions to their 2025-26 basketball roster as the offseason continues on. UNC does have to fill some production with the departures of Elliot Cadeau, RJ Davis, Ian Jackson, Drake Powell, and Jae'Lyn Withers. While they have added a few key pieces, the search continues on. However, they will not be pursuing one guard who is available in the portal. After news broke that Florida has ended its pursuit of USC guard Desmond Claude, many felt like the Tar Heels were an easy connection. But that didn't last long as Joe Tipton of On3 put that rumor to rest stating that UNC is not involved for Claude. The 6-foot-6 guard averaged 15.8 points per game last season for the Trojans and is one of the top guards in the transfer portal. He would fill a need for UNC despite the program already bringing in a few guards. However, with Tipton's news it does signal that either his NIL price is too high or the Tar Heels are just not interested as it is in Claude. UNC basketball lands commitment from guard in transfer portal
UNC basketball lands commitment from guard in transfer portal The North Carolina Tar Heels picked up a commitment on Friday afternoon, helping with guard depth for the upcoming season. After losing RJ Davis and Elliot Cadeau, the Tar Heels needed to reload in the backcourt. And on Friday, they added a familiar ACC foe. Former Virginia Tech guard Jaydon Young has committed to North Carolina out of the transfer portal, flipping from his original commitment to High Point. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Young is a Greensboro, North Carolina, native and will be a junior this year. He averaged 8.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game last season while averaging 22.3 minutes per game before entering the transfer portal. With UNC needing some depth at guard, it makes sense. He's a local product who has played in the ACC and can come off the bench and give the Tar Heels valuable minutes. It should also not rule UNC out for other potential targets at the guard position. Michigan starting PG leaves shortly after Elliot Cadeau's arrival
The North Carolina Tar Heels have plenty of roster questions they need to address in the transfer portal, highlighted by landing a starting point guard. Elliot Cadeau improved over the past two seasons as UNC's starter, but he entered his name in the transfer portal and, shortly after, committed to Michigan. North Carolina is welcoming Class of 2025 combo guards Derek Dixon and Isaiah Denis, either of whom can run the point, but the need for more collegiate experience looms large. Advertisement With Cadeau's arrival in Ann Arbor followed the departure of Tre Donaldson, who started at point guard for the Wolverines. Donaldson averaged 11.3 points and 4.1 assists per game, the latter figure leading his teammates, but Donaldson knew that Cadeau's arrival means a dip in playing time for him. Donaldson is now in the portal, announcing his decision to enter it on April 1 – and the Tar Heels should seriously considering adding a guard of his experience to their roster. Not only did Donaldson average career highs during Michigan's run to the Sweet 16, but Donaldson has previous Power 4 experience, playing his first two collegiate seasons at Auburn. Donaldson thrived in his first year under Dustry May, starting all 37 games for the Wolverines. Advertisement It's not often you see two teams swap point guards, as larger deals are typically involved, but we're talking about the collegiate transfer portal here. There isn't any reported interest between Donaldson and UNC, but he'd be a great 1-year rental in Chapel Hill. Morez Johnson Jr. transfers from Illinois to Michigan basketball
The transfer portal in college basketball is in full swing, with Michigan basketball having received one incoming transfer in former North Carolina Tar Heels point guard Elliot Cadeau and losing three in point guard Tre Donaldson, forward Sam Walters, and forward Jace Howard. The Wolverines now can make it two and three. Advertisement Not too long after the transfer portal opened, the maize and blue secured Cadeau, but now they're adding another to the squad. According to 247Sports Dushawn London, the Wolverines are adding a transfer from a Big Ten rival with Illinois forward Morez Johnson Jr. leaving the Illini for Ann Arbor. Johnson appeared in 30 games last season and averaged seven points and 6.7 rebounds. Last season was his first in college basketball, and he will have three years of eligibility remaining. Coming in at 6-foot-9, Johnson is still coming along as a player, but he does have three double-doubles to his name. As a recruit, he was ranked No. 30 overall in the 2024 class as well as the sixth-best center (though he projects more to power forward). The scouting report as a recruit via 247Sports: Johnson is a powerfully built big man, constant double-double threat, and versatile frontcourt defender. He's not the tallest or most offensively skilled, but strong from head-to-toe, physical on both ends of the floor, and very efficient in his role. Defensively, he can bang on the block, provide a physical deterrent to opposing drivers, and really clean the glass (9.8 rebounds per game). Simultaneously though, he can also move laterally and use his length to contain opposing ball-handlers in pick-and-roll action. Offensively, he's a little limited in the post and not yet a consistent shooting threat beyond 15 feet, but nonetheless very effective within his role. He's a diligent rim runner, quick roller off ball screens, and very balanced inside the lane, both ducking-in for deep post position and pivoting through contact. Johnson finishes through traffic and scores equally well with both hands around the rim. Advertisement Johnson will not replace Walters' 3-point prowess as he did not attempt a single 3 all season last year.
