It's official: E-W Metro's Sealdah-Esp stretch finally set to open next Fri
Kolkata: It's official. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate East-West Metro's last 2.6km leg and two other metro lines next Friday. TOI has been reporting on the anticipated launch of the last 2.6 km Esplanade-Sealdah stretch of the East-West Metro or Green Line, the first 7 km Noapara-Airport section of the Yellow Line, and Phase II of the Orange Line (4.4 km Ruby-Metropolitan) since Aug 6. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Finally, on Thursday, Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the information with the BJP functionaries in Bengal. Extending an invitation to Sukanta Majumdar, Union minister of state for education and development of the northeastern region, the railway minister wrote: "Hon'ble Prime Minister will inaugurate the Sealdah-Esplanade Metro section, Beleghata (as the station at Metropolitan is called)-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (the station at EM Bypass' Ruby crossing) and Noapara-Jai Hind (airport Metro station), the subway at Howrah metro station and flag off trains in these sections on 22 Aug 2025." The letter was forwarded to the media by Majumdar, who also wrote on X: "This is a historic gift for West Bengal before Durga Puja." "At last, the city's biggest infrastructure project will finally run its full 16.6 km length, connecting Sector V on the east and Howrah Maidan on the west of the Hooghly," an engineer of KMRC, the implementing agency of the Rs 10,000 crore project, said. Apart from the East-West Metro, the commissioning of the Noapara-Airport or the Yellow Line will be very significant for the transportation sector as Kolkata will get its first metro-airport connectivity. The Noapara station is a part of the 32 km North-South Metro or Blue Line, which also has an interface with the East-West Metro at Esplanade. Flyers from Howrah, Kolkata, and the southern and northern suburbs will now have the option of availing Metro services to board an aircraft. The 9.2 km Sector V-Sealdah section could not continue to Esplanade since the authorities had to skip the in-between 2.6 km Esplanade-Sealdah stretch, which suffered several setbacks because it passes through the subsidence-ridden Bowbazar area.

‘One frame, four Namma Metro trains' footage goes viral
Bengaluru: While Namma Metro Yellow Line is in the spotlight for linking city's tech corridor, one video has stolen the show by racking up lakhs of views and occupying the centre stage of Metro train-related discussion. Shot by entrepreneur and Jayanagar resident Srihari Karanth, the aerial drone footage captures a breathtaking scene at the RV Road Interchange station, where two Yellow Line and two Green Line trains appear in the same frame, traversing two intersecting Metro corridors simultaneously. This rare and synchronised moment, captured by him after a two-hour wait, evoked positive comments from citizens and corporate honchos too. Speaking to TOI, Karanth, who is also a drone content creator, said: "When I posted an aerial shot capturing the movement of four trains at the end of RV Road, I did not expect it to receive such a huge response. The video was widely appreciated by users across social media. I am truly delighted. In the run-up to the Yellow Line's opening, BMRCL was operating pre-commissioning trial runs, and I filmed this before the launch. Spotting two trains on the Green Line is common, catching three — one from Yellow Line and two from Green Line — was rare. Five days before the line opened, for two hours in the evening, I had drone in the air. Two batteries drained, but with the third, we finally captured the movement of four trains heading in different directions. I feel I was lucky." A Metro enthusiast, Karanth said the timing of posting the video also played a key role as Bengalureans were eagerly anticipating the opening of the Yellow Line. RV Road Interchange is surrounded by lush green parks on either side of the road, and Yellow Line Metro traverses over Green Line Metro at the end of the road towards Ragigudda. Biocon executive chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, reacting to the video footage on 'X', said: "Isn't that a beautiful shot dotting Bengaluru's urban mobility landscape with sustainable and green alternatives." Karanth said: "During my free time, I spend time capturing aerial videos using drone. In the past, I documented the progress of Yellow Line work and also the trial run. Barring this, aerial shots of tech parks, Metro line operations on Green Line, and others received a good response from people." In the past, stunning aerial shots of Shivanasamudra, tourist places in Tamil Nadu, and districts of Karnataka such as Chikkamagaluru and Udupi also went viral. Bengaluru: Namma Metro Breaks Record As Yellow Line Debut Draws Over 10 Lakh Commuters
Last Updated: BMRCL officials revealed they had initially estimated a modest turnout of 25,000 to 30,000 commuters for the Yellow Line's opening day. Karnataka Chief Minister on Wednesday announced that Namma Metro set a new 'single day' record with 10.48 lakh people travelling on the network a day after the Yellow Line was launched. The record was set on August 11, said Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), a joint venture floated by the Government of India and the Karnataka government, to build, operate and expand the Namma Metro network. Sources from BMRCL said the agency had only expected a turnout of 25,000 to 30,000 people as there are only three train sets. But the opening day saw three times more people using the Yellow Line. 'With 4,51,816 people travelling on the Purple Line, 2,91,677 on the Green Line, 52,215 on the Yellow Line and 2,52,323 on the Interchange, Namma Metro has now become the lifeline of transportation for Bengaluru residents," wrote the CM in microblogging site X, formerly Twitter. 'I request the public to support our efforts to alleviate traffic congestion by making more use of mass transit such as the metro," he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Yellow Line boosts Namma Metro ridership past one million mark
Bengaluru: Bengaluru's Namma Metro has recorded a sharp rise in daily ridership, crossing the 10-lakh mark following the launch of the Yellow Line (RV Road to Bommasandra) on August 11. Before the line's inauguration, the city's metro saw an average of 8 lakh passengers daily, occasionally touching 9 lakh. Now, with the new corridor operational, ridership has surged by around 2 lakh. On Monday, August 12, passenger counts stood at 4,51,816 on the Purple Line, 2,91,677 on the Green Line, 52,215 on the Yellow Line, and 2,52,323 using interchange facilities — totalling 10,48,031 commuters. Of these, 5,03,937 used smart cards, 2,08,382 used QR code tickets, and 3,03,165 travelled using tokens. Officials expect the numbers to grow further in the coming days. To enhance commuter convenience, Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has introduced feeder bus services along the Yellow Line. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy flagged off the service on Tuesday. The new network operates on four feeder routes with 12 buses making 96 trips daily, connecting six metro stations including Hosur Road, Beretena Agrahara, Electronic City, Infosys Foundation, Konappana Agrahara, Hebbagodi, and Bommasandra. Across the city, BMTC operates hundreds of feeder buses on 45 routes from major metro stations, including KR Puram Railway Station, running over 2,750 trips daily and serving more than 1.2 lakh passengers. Commuters can now access live tracking, schedules, and related updates for these buses via QR codes placed at metro stations and inside trains. Officials have attributed Monday's spike in Namma Metro ridership to the long-awaited launch of the Yellow Line, which had been delayed for over four years. The 19.15-km Yellow Line corridor, part of Phase 2 of the Metro project and built at a cost of ₹7,160 crore, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday. The new line connects RV Road to Bommasandra, with 16 stations along the route, passing through key commercial and IT hubs. According to BMRCL, the Yellow Line is expected to ease traffic congestion in Bengaluru's southern corridor. With this addition, the city's total Metro network now spans 96 km. BMRCL estimates that daily ridership could soon reach 12.5 lakh passengers.
