Local man held, 5,270kg cooking oil seized in Semporna

By: Azmie Lim Text Size: The suspect and the seizures. SEMPORNA: The General Operation Force (GOF) detained a local man and seized 5,270kg of packet cooking oil in an operation on Wednesday. The items worth RM15,675 were seized in the 'Ops Bersepadu Intra/Inter Agensi Op Taring Bravo 2' conducted by the Intelligence Unit/Task Force of Kunak 22nd Battalion and Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) at Kampung Seri Melor. Sabah GOF Commander Datuk Abdul Rani Alias said acting on intelligence, the team raided a house in the village and found 310 boxes containing 5,720 packets of 1kg cooking oil. A local man was detained to assist in investigation as he failed to produce documents proving ownership or storing the subsidised items. Preliminary investigation revealed that the subsidized items were supplied by individual(s) from other district and the suspect was believed involved in buying and selling the items since early 2025, he said. Rani said investigation is ongoing under the Control of Supplies Act 1961.

Five teens plead not guilty: Charges of using abusive words against Zara

Kota Kinabalu: Five teenage girls pleaded not guilty at the Children's Court here Wednesday to the charges of using abusive words against Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir last month. The five made the plea before Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus in closed proceedings. Advertisement They are accused of uttering abusive words directed at Zara Qairina, which were heard by the victim, and could have caused her distress. The offence allegedly took place between 10pm and 11pm on July 15. The girls were jointly charged under Section 507C(1)/34 of the Penal Code, which relates to the offence of using or making any threatening, abusive or insulting words, or communication, where a person is likely to feel harassed, distressed, fear or alarmed. It provides for a jail term of up to one year, or fine, or both, on conviction. The court set Sept 25 and Oct 16 for pre-trial case management, trial dates on Dec 8-12 and Dec 15-19. The girls were released on bail of RM5,000 each with RM1,000 deposited in a local surety. Deputy Public Prosecutors Nor Azizah Mohamad, Nik Haslinie Hashim and Deepa Nair Thevaharan appeared for the prosecution. Counsel Datuk Ram Singh, together with counsels Joan Goh and Elmer Prem Gunasan, represented one of the teenagers. The other four were represented by counsels Azhier Farhan Arisin, Abdul Fikry Jaafar, Farah Nazriah Chun Lee, Fareez Salleh and Sylyester Kuan. Counsels for Noraidah Lamat, the late Zara's mother, Hamid Ismail, Shahlan Jufri and four others, were also present at the proceedings. All the counsels for the five teenagers acted on the pro-bono basis. Counsels Dominic Ghani and Nabila Norsahar were present as watching brief on behalf of the Sabah Law Society. During the proceedings, the court also issued a Gag Order under Section 15 of the Child Act. Previously, the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC), in a statement, said it had examined the investigation papers into the student's death, which were referred by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and decided to charge several suspects based on available evidence. The AGC also said an inquest proceeding still needs to be conducted to determine the actual cause of Zara Qairina's death. On Aug 12, the AGC decided to conduct an inquest to ascertain the cause and circumstances behind the death of the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Tun Datu Mustapha student after reviewing the investigation report submitted by PDRM. The Coroner's Court here on Monday set Sept 3 to commence the inquest proceedings. Object that exploded in Polish field could be drone or sabotage-related, defence minister says
(Corrects time to around 2100 GMT in paragraph 6) WARSAW (Reuters) -An object which fell and exploded in a cornfield in eastern Poland may have been a component of an old propeller engine, the Polish army said on Wednesday, adding that there had been no violation of Poland's airspace from Ukraine or Belarus. Police had earlier announced that an unidentified object had fallen in a field in the village of Osiny in eastern Poland's Lublin province, which borders Ukraine. "...after conducting preliminary analyses of radar system records, no violation of Polish airspace was recorded last night from either Ukraine or Belarus," the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said on X. "The information about the discovery of an object, which, according to preliminary assessments, may be a component of an old propeller engine, has been forwarded to the Air Operations Center – Air Component Command." The blast shattered windows in several homes, but nobody was injured, PAP news agency reported. Police officers found burnt metal and plastic debris at the site, it added. Air raid sirens rang out for about an hour over the border in Ukraine's Volyn and Lviv regions from around 2100 GMT, according to messages from its military posted on Telegram. There were no reports of air attacks in those regions, their governors said.
