Coolie box office collection Day 3: Rajinikanth starrer becomes fastest Tamil film to earn ₹300 crore worldwide, beats Vettaiyan and Mohanlal's Empuraan on opening weekend
Coolie box office collection Day 3: Rajinikanth's box office fire is far from fading. Director Lokesh Kanagaraj's new film Coolie has not only set fan frenzy ablaze worldwide but is also ruling the global box office. Released on August 14, 2025, just a day before the Independence Day weekend, the movie clashed with Hrithik Roshan's War 2 but refused to slow down. In just three days, Coolie has stormed past the ₹300 crore mark, and the internet can't stop celebrating. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, on its first day (Thursday), Coolie earned ₹65 crore net in India. On day 2 (Friday), it collected ₹54.75 crore (a slight drop but still massive). On day 3 (Saturday), early estimates showed around ₹38.5 crore, bringing the three-day India net total to ₹158.25 crore. Coolie's overseas earnings and the worldwide collection have already surpassed the 300 crore mark. According to one of the trade analysts, Sumit Kadel, Coolie has now become the fastest Tamil film ever to hit that milestone. On the other hand, as per Sacnilk, War 2 earned ₹26.18 crore net in India on day 3, Friday. According to Kadel, the film has pulled in between ₹320–325 crore worldwide in just three days, and it's already on a straight track to blockbuster status. With this, the superstar has also gone past his last release Vettaiyan's lifetime earnings. On Day 2, Coolie was barely ₹26 crore short of crossing Vettaiyan, which had made ₹146.89 crore in its entire run, and here comes Coolie, doing it all in its opening weekend. The film also smashed past Ajith's Good Bad Ugly (₹180 crore) and even overtook the ₹265 crore global haul of Mohanlal–Prithviraj Sukumaran's L2: Empuraan. In France, Coolie also broke records by selling 8,800 tickets on opening day, beating Vijay's Leo (8,500). The film is doing exceptionally well in Singapore, the UAE, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and North America. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Rajinikanth's star power and massive fan following are pulling huge crowds everywhere. Now, the movie is aiming for the ₹600 crore club. Only three Tamil films have ever crossed that mark before: 2.0 (Rajinikanth), Jailer (Rajinikanth), Leo (Vijay). Kite string slits neck of man on flyover near Tughlakabad in Delhi, condition critical
A 30-year-old man sustained critical injuries after his neck was allegedly slit by a manjha or kite string while he was on a flyover near Tughlakabad Metro station on Saturday evening. The incident was reported around 4.40 pm on the carriageway connecting Sarita Vihar to Faridabad. The victim, Rajneesh from Akhibelpur village in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi district, was rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where his condition remains serious, police said. 'He was found bleeding heavily from the neck… Preliminary investigation suggests that he was injured from red manjha or a kite string,' said DCP (South East) Hemant Tiwari. This comes amid the Delhi Police Crime Branch mounting a crackdown against the sale of the banned Chinese manjha – a synthetic, glass-coated kite string notorious for causing grievous injuries and deaths in the city during the festive season. In the run-up to Independence Day, police said they had arrested three men for allegedly selling Chinese Manjha and recovered 68 rolls from their possession. Police said that in a raid carried out on Thursday in North East Delhi's New Seelampur, two persons – Ashu (22) and Imran (22) – were arrested and 18 rolls of plastic-based Chinese manjha seized. The same day, the Inter-State Cell of the Crime Branch raided a shop at Sangam Vihar in Wazirabad, where 50 rolls of the string were recovered from Mohammad Saaqib (35). He too was arrested.

PU protest ends after understanding on checking, raids
Chandigarh: The three-day protest at Panjab University came to an end on the evening of Independence Day after students and university authorities reached a mutual understanding on key issues related to police presence, vehicle checking, hostel inspections, and campus traffic management. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The protest began on August 13, when students objected to police personnel conducting vehicle checks at internal nakas, claiming it violated assurances given during a prior meeting with the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and dean, Student Welfare (DSW). Students demanded the complete withdrawal of police from campus, citing concerns over excessive surveillance and intrusion. After multiple rounds of discussions, it was agreed that vehicle checking would be handled solely by university security. Police will only be involved if something objectionable is found during routine checks. A similar arrangement was made for hostel room inspections—wardens and university security will conduct checks, and police will intervene only in cases of illegal activity. The naka at the administrative block, which had become the focal point of the protest, has been suspended. However, three other nakas inside the Sector 14 campus will continue to operate, and checking at the main gates will remain in place. Authorities also agreed to review the one-way traffic system on two major campus roads. The chief of university security will submit a report, and the final decision will be taken by the SSP. On August 14, tensions escalated when students blocked another road and two sat on a hunger strike. The DSW warned that continued disruption could impact the upcoming student council elections, expected to be announced next week. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While the written agreement does not mention any reduction in police deployment—a key student demand—DSW Prof Amit Chauhan said the arrangements were made keeping both student concerns and campus security in mind. "Our responsibility is to ensure safety while also listening to students. These steps reflect that balance," he said. Police deployment will resume once the election code of conduct comes into force.
