2026 Tamil Nadu elections will mark a permanent farewell to Edappadi Palaniswami: M.K. Stalin

The Hindu2 days ago
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday (July 16, 2025) said the upcoming State Assembly elections would mark a permanent farewell to AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami, alleging that even members of his own party no longer trust him.
Mr. Stalin made the remarks while launching and inaugurating completed development projects and distributing welfare assistance in Mayiladuthurai district, during which he expressed criticism of both the AIADMK and BJP-led Union government.
Responding to Mr. Palaniswami's criticism of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme, Mr. Stalin said, 'He is unable to accept the scheme's success. His criticisms only serve to advertise our achievements. We implement this scheme without bias; even women from AIADMK families benefit.'
He accused Mr. Palaniswami of reversing welfare progress during his tenure, pointing to the cancellation of the Moovalur Ramamirtham marriage assistance scheme and the free laptop distribution programme. 'Mr. Palaniswami says 'Tata, bye bye' to me. But since 2019, the people of Tamil Nadu have been saying the same to him. In the upcoming elections, it will be a permanent goodbye,' Mr. Stalin remarked. 'Even his own party cadres no longer believe in him.'
Taking aim at Mr. Palaniswami's outreach to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Mr. Stalin alleged, that the AIADMK leader had knocked on Delhi's doors not for the people of Tamil Nadu but to escape raids and protect his family. 'He mortgaged a party built by lakhs of cadre,' Mr. Stalin alleged.
On the issue of Tamil Nadu fishermen's frequent arrests by Sri Lankan authorities, Mr. Stalin criticised the Union government for political inaction. 'The BJP-led Union government has failed to act, while continuing to politicise the Katchatheevu issue. The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister clearly said the Tamil Nadu fishermen are intruding into their waters and that Katchatheevu will never be returned. And what has our External Affairs Minister said in response? Nothing.' Mr. Stalin reiterated his demand for the Prime Minister to directly intervene and bring a lasting solution to the issue.
Mr. Stalin declared that the next government at the Centre would be a 'Dravidian Model 2.0 government', one that would serve as a national benchmark for inclusive and progressive governance.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Stalin unveiled a statue of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at Vazhuvur village in Kuthalam taluk. He also held a brief roadshow near Dharmapuram, where he greeted school and college students as well as members of the general public.

Red flag will fly high for eternity, says CPI leader

The Red Flag representing the Communist movement will fly high in the sky for eternity, as long as there is oppression, the cry for justice will be heard, said Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretary K. Ramakrishna. Participating at the city-level convention in Tirupati as part of the party's centenary celebrations in India, the CPI leader spoke about the perennial relevance of the Leftist movement. 'The Red Flag remains a ray of hope for the country's future. The people-oriented parties will join hands with the Communists in the days to come to put an end to the fascist rule,' Mr. Ramakrishna said. 'The Leftist movement in India is still a force to reckon with today, because of the sacrifices in the freedom movement and enduring sufferings for the sake of the downtrodden. The BJP-led NDA government is bent on benefitting the capitalists, trampling upon the rights of the citizens and making a mockery of the Constitution,' Mr. Ramakrishna alleged. Taking a jibe at the 'double engine growth', he said it has pushed the country into debts instead of propelling growth. The party leader faulted the State government-led by N. Chandrababu Naidu for failing to implement the 'Super Six' schemes and in the same vein, flayed the former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for trying to foment trouble by inciting his cadre to resort to violence.

Raise important issues in Parliament, mobilise maximum funds from Centre, Naidu tells TDP MPs

Chief Minister and TDP national president N. Chandrababu Naidu on Friday directed the TDP MPs to raise important issues like the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for various crops, utilisation of the Godavari and Krishna river waters and the support required by Andhra Pradesh (A.P.) for industrial development in the upcoming session of Parliament. Addressing the Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party (TDPP) meeting in the run-up to the monsoon session of Parliament beginning on July 21, Mr. Naidu said the MPs should make the best use of the time allotted to them by highlighting the issues related to the State and strive to mobilise the maximum possible amount of funds from the Centre for implementing various schemes and projects. He also wanted the MPs to duly apprise the Parliament of the steps taken by the A.P. Government for the development of the State. The MPs should take the Central support required by the State to the notice of the nation through the Parliament. The CM said, department-wise responsibilities were assigned to the MPs and called upon them to keep in regular touch with the Union Ministers concerned to resolve matters pertaining to the State, and to focus on garnering additional funds under schemes like the Jal Jeevan Mission and Ayushman Bharat. Mr. Naidu told the MPs to be updated and fully acquainted with the issues dealt by them in order to make forceful arguments on contentious matters, like he articulated the State's position on certain issues in the recent meeting with the Union Minister for Jal Shakti, C.R. Patil and Telangana CM A. Revanth Reddy. He instructed the MPs to speak about the good work being done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and to actively participate in discussions on topics like Operation Sindoor and the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, and counselled them not to interfere in unnecessary matters in their constituencies as such behaviour would tarnish their personal reputation as well as the party's. Union Ministers K. Rammohan Naidu and Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and IT Minister and the party's national general secretary Nara Lokesh were among those present in the deliberations.

Right-wing group storms Ghaziabad eateries over sale of meat during Sawan

Members of the right-wing Hindu Raksha Dal on Thursday (July 17, 2025) stormed a KFC outlet in Ghaziabad, demanding a ban on the sale of non-vegetarian food during the Hindu month of Sawan. A similar protest was staged outside a neighbouring outlet of local eatery chain Nazir, leading to the temporary closure of both establishments. Visuals of the incident circulated widely on social media showed members of the outfit carrying saffron flags and chanting slogans such as 'Jai Shri Ram' and 'Har Har Mahadev', while forcibly pulling down the shutter of the KFC outlet. In the video, the group is seen entering the restaurant, confronting staff, and demanding that operations be stopped. 'All of these products should be banned immediately, we will not tolerate this in Sawan,' a protester is heard shouting. Consumer panel says Opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the incident, holding it responsible for what they termed a deterioration in law and order. 'Such actions are a violation of the fundamental rights of citizens. When there is no ban, how can individuals storm a food chain and force it to shut down? It is a design to create disorder in society through groups that have become mainstream after the BJP assumed power. Holy occasions are being used to fuel tension on communal lines,' Shahnawaz Alam, national secretary, Congress, said. VIDEO | Abhishek Srivastava, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Indirapuram, says, "A few youths created ruckus demanding a food outlet to close. Upon receiving the information, the police reached the spot immediately and removed them. Normal operation at the outlet was ensured. A… — Press Trust of India (@PTI_News) July 18, 2025 The Samajwadi Party also condemned the protest. 'If the BJP or right-wing groups want a ban on meat sales, they should ask the government to close slaughterhouses and prohibit the sale of meat across India for one month during Sawan. Half of the slaughterhouses are run by BJP-linked people. Such unruly action in closing a food chain highlights a failure of governance,' party spokesperson Sunil Singh Yadav 'Sajan' said. The incident also triggered debate on social media, with many users criticising the actions of the protestors. Sawan, also known as Shravana, is considered a holy month in the Hindu calendar, particularly by devotees of Lord Shiva. Many observe fasts and refrain from consuming meat, alcohol, and even onion and garlic during this period. The Kanwar Yatra, a major pilgrimage, is also undertaken during this time.
