Marvel Studios Reportedly Approached Ryan Coogler to Direct X-MEN Reboot — GeekTyrant
Before Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier shot to the top of the list of filmmakers to take on Marvel's X-Men movie, a new report reveals that the studio also had its sights on Black Panther filmmaker Ryan Coogler at one point.
According to veteran film journalist Jeff Sneider:
'I know they did talk to Ryan Coogler at one point...but Coogler, with the timing, you know, he'd have to focus on Black Panther 3. He's needed in another corner of the universe.'
Coogler is currently riding high with his genre-bending vampire thriller Sinners , which is breaking box office records. But it's easy to see why Marvel would consider him as he's proven he can build complex characters, tap into rich cultural themes, and deliver spectacle with heart.
That's the kind of balance an X-Men movie needs, and Schreier will be able to deliver that as well. His work on the Netflix series Beef and Thunderbolts* was awesome, and with Thunderbolts scoring an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, it seems Feige and company are happy with what the filmmaker delivered.
As for where the X-Men reboot stands creatively, Michael Lesslie ( The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes ) was brought in last May to write the first draft. But if Marvel's history is any indication, expect more writers to join in before production gets underway.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has made it clear that the return of the mutants is central to the next chapter of the MCU. In an earlier interview, he shared:
'...knowing that, thanks to various corporate studio entity deals, we now have 1000s of characters back — characters I hadn't frankly thought about in many years because we didn't have the rights to them.
"Now that we do, it is great fun thinking [about who we can finally use]. Our animated series X-Men '97 was sort of the first taste of people reuniting with the X-Men mythology and that storyline. The response to that series just further excited us about how to bring the soap opera and the saga of the mutants to the MCU."
There was also talk at one point of Jordan Peele taking the reins of an X-Men project, but those discussions reportedly didn't go far, as he's focused on telling original stories.
With the Multiverse Saga wrapping up in a few years, the X-Men are expected to take center stage in the MCU's future. Feige 'has told colleagues he has a 10-year plan' for the X-Men characters after they are properly and formally introduced into the MCU.
It's going to be really interesting to see how this next X-Men movie turns out.

Disney+ viewers in UK risk £1k TV Licence fine if caught tuning into new content
Millions of Disney+ viewers are being warned they risk fines of up to £1,000 if they watch new content being added later this year. Usually, if you are watching streaming services like Netflix, Disney+ or Amazon Prime you do not require a TV licence. However, household in the UK is legally required to have a TV licence if they watch or record live TV, regardless of what channel it is on. Disney+ announced last month it had won the broadcasting rights to the UEFA Women's Champions League until 2030. This new deal will allow fans to watch every match live "at no extra cost". If viewers are caught watching live content without a TV licence, they could be fined up to £1,000. The majority of Disney+ content remains exempt from the TV Licence fee, as long as it is not being broadcast live. These are the occasions when you do not need a TV Licence. 'If you think you're eligible for a free licence but can't apply online, please call 0300 790 6117* and speak to one of our advisors to request an application form (our lines are open between 8.30am and 6.30pm, from Monday to Friday). 'Once we've received your application it may take a few weeks to process. If there are any problems we'll write to let you know. We may also call you if you have given us your phone number. 'There are separate arrangements in place for over 75s on the Isle of Man, the Bailiwick of Jersey and the Bailiwick of Guernsey.' The proud vagina candle maven has been known to open up about everything from hiding in her parents house after winning her Oscar at 26, to living with ex Chris Martin after they split and how hard it is to be an empty-nester. Now the Marvel star is opening up about being 'an old lady' when it comes to social media. While it's not impossible to be famous today and stay off social media (or at least not put your whole life online), it's not something that's done on a regular basis. In fact, most people, whether they're celebrities or not, use social media regularly, but the pressure to show every aspect of one's life must certainly be greater the more well known a person is. During an episode of The Goop Podcast where Gwyneth Paltrow spoke with actress Kerry Washington, the welcoming lifestyle company founder spoke about her feelings on social media, and admitted that some of her reticence likely has to do with age. As she said: There's a part of it I think that just is like a pre-Internet kid. I always wrestle a little bit with, 'Why are we having to put everything on social media? We just met with our video team. I'm always like, 'Chase, I don't want to be on Instagram!' You know? OMG. Gwynnie! I don't want to be on Instagram, either! But I am, because it's just what people do now. Of course, no one is expecting me to share literally everything I do during the day, so I'm totally free to sit back, follow a bunch of other folks and enjoy the view. When fans see Paltrow on social media, well, they want her to share things. Several stars have spoken about the immense pressure that can come from being online and opening your life up to fans. It has, in fact, caused a number of them to at least take breaks from it. Recently, A Complete Unknown star and Oscar nominee Monica Barbaro admitted that she's deleted her social media several times, and had to do it while filming that movie and again as positive reactions came in. Other famous folk have talked about doing the same social media 'detox' for a while, with Only Murders in the Building lead Selena Gomez calling the process 'the most rewarding gift.' This is likely because, as Home Town host Erin Napier once noted, regardless of what you post, the comments can be 'really rude.' While that can certainly harm one's mental health, however, the potential positives tend to outweigh some of the negatives for Paltrow, and that's exactly why she continues to use it. As she added: And yet, especially around the topic of mental health, or anything really that's heavily stigmatized, social media is this way to destigmatize. ... [like] wait, this is how you change culture and the tools right now are social media. So even though I'm like an old lady trying to get with the times of how this works... [I try to] get comfortable with it. And, lucky for us, she has gotten 'comfortable' with it and continues to share with fans on a regular basis.
