Junior Khanye identifies Orlando Pirates' next skipper
Junior Khanye is in no doubt about who the next Orlando Pirates skipper should be. Do you agree with the former Kaizer Chiefs man?
Mbekezeli Mbokazi has exploded onto the scene, immediately making himself an Orlando Pirates regular at the age of 19. The central defender's rapid rise isn't lost on Junior Khanye. In his breakout campaign, the stylish left-footer has made 15 appearances across all competitions. He'll only turn 20 in September.
'He's a future captain of Pirates, this boy Mbokazi,' said Khanye on iDiski TV.
'He has leadership skills, and you know how sometimes they say you are born for something; he was born to be a leader. Some of the things he does do not need coaching. The boy gets in the midfield with the ball, just driving for about 30m with the ball on his feet. His ball control, how he's able to protect it and force a foul or even delaying until his teammates get into the Golden Arrows' half and then hit a decisive pass.
'Well done to the boy. Like I said, he has leadership skills, and if you can look at this boy, even at the back he is helping [Tapelo] Xoki a lot. So many mistakes from Xoki for me, and always being late. I know he's a senior player, but the boy his quality. He is strong on his feet, his awareness, anticipation, a lot of things and how he communicates, well done to the boy.'
According to UnplayableZA on X, 23-year-old Tshepo Mashiloane will join Pirates from Baroka FC. The versatile star can operate at right-back or in central midfield. There are reports that Pirates are also close to wrapping up a deal for Baroka's winger Kabelo Kgositsile.
Orlando Pirates will be eager to give Jose Riveiro a proper sendoff in their remaining fixtures. The first one of those is against TS Galaxy on Saturday, 17 May, with kickoff at 15:00. Makhehlene Makhaula will miss the match after being ruled out for the rest of the season.

Jose Riveiro reveals the real reason he left Orlando Pirates?
Earlier this year, Jose Riveiro dropped a bombshell when he announced that he would not extend his stay when his contract at Orlando Pirates expired. At the time he made the announcement, the Buccaneers were well poised to win at least two trophies, but poor form saw the team finish with just the MTN8, which they won at the beginning of the season. After losing the Nedbank Cup final on 10 May, Jose Riveiro asked the Pirates management to release him early as he had already signed with a new club. At the time, the Sea Robbers had nothing to play for with the league already out of reach. The Spaniard won five trophies in three seasons and while most coaches would want to continue winning, Riveiro chose to leave. He did make a hint last year when he mentioned how far he was away from his family. Having joined Al Ahly, the 49-year-old has revealed that his wife's dream is to live in Egypt as she adores the culture. 'I am married and have a 6-year-old daughter, and I'm very happy that she's part of my life,' he told Al Ahly TV. '[I am] thrilled that she'll have the opportunity to come live in Egypt. Jose Riveiro might have had success at Pirates, but time away from his family took a toll on him. Given Egypt is much closer to Spain, it makes sense why he decided to relocate and coach in North Africa. His wife's love for Egypt made his decision to leave Pirates muach easier. Kaizer Chiefs cool interest in Terrence Mashego
Kaizer Chiefs are actively searching for a new left-back, but recent developments suggest that Terrence Mashego of Mamelodi Sundowns is no longer on their radar. Despite being linked with the 29-year-old, the Glamour Boys appear to have shifted their attention elsewhere. Mashego, who joined Sundowns in September 2022, may exit the club at the end of June. His future hangs in the balance, especially with Sundowns keen to secure the services of Stellenbosch FC's Fawaaz Basadien.
