Malaysia Poised To Become Major Healthcare Hub, Says MBSB IB

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is poised to become a major healthcare hub, driven by quality care, advancing technologies, and the growth of the hospitality sector, said MBSB Investment Bank Bhd (MBSB IB). In a note today, the bank said that the healthcare sector is undergoing a transition due to evolving national healthcare needs. 'Malaysia is progressing from a developing to a high-income nation, and its healthcare system is grappling with the complexities that accompany this shift. "The epidemiological transition from communicable to non-communicable diseases, coupled with an ageing population, reflects a maturing society that now faces diseases of affluence and lifestyle," it said. MBSB IB noted that challenges are no longer merely about basic access, which has largely been achieved in Peninsular Malaysia, but now concern quality, efficiency, equity, and sustainability amid rising costs and demand. Malaysia is not rigidly adhering to a single ideological model – whether fully public or private – but is instead adopting a pragmatic, dual-tier system with increasing public-private partnerships, it said. The bank said strong government support forms the backbone of the sector. 'The government's continued heavy subsidisation of public healthcare and its active pursuit of universal health coverage through various initiatives, such as PeKaB40, Skim Perubatan Madani, and the National Health Fund, demonstrate a firm commitment to ensuring that healthcare remains a right for all citizens, not merely a privilege. 'This is reflected in the Budget 2025's allocation of RM45.3 billion for the domestic healthcare sector. The willingness to address high out-of-pocket expenses also highlights a focus on financial risk protection for the population,' it said.

New AADK approach to drug rehabilitation

BANDAR BARU: The National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) has introduced a new treatment and rehabilitation module which emphasises a holistic, client-friendly and evidence-based approach. Its director-general, Datuk Ruslin Jusoh, said the new module is the agency's effort to strengthen the country's drug addiction or abuse treatment and rehabilitation system in line with current needs. The launch of this new module is a significant step for ensuring that treatment and rehabilitation methods and approaches remain relevant to current changes, particularly those involving drug addiction issues, Bernama reported. 'Furthermore, this module was designed in collaboration with all parties, encompassing a biopsychosocial-spiritual integrated approach and evidence-based treatment and rehabilitation methods,' he told reporters after officiating the AADK Open Day at the Narcotics Addiction Rehabilitation Centre here yesterday. According to him, the launch of the module reflects the agency's commitment to remain responsive to the changing landscape of addiction, particularly concerning synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances. 'Through this module, the phased recovery strategy that emphasises self-empowerment, community support, employment, skills, and reintegration into society has also been updated as a guide for AADK recovery officers to carry out their duties professionally and consistently,' he added. Meanwhile, Ruslin said the AADK Open Day was held to provide information about the agency's latest services to all clients.

PM ensures Port Dickson family receives aid

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for immediate assistance to be provided to a family in Kampung Baru Si Rusa, Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan, who are facing hardship after the head of the household suffered a stroke. Anwar, who visited Faridah Abbas' family with his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, said the family is fully dependent on Faridah after her husband, Mohamad Ali Abdul Malek, became bedridden in 2024. "Azizah and I are deeply affected by the ordeal faced by this family. I have instructed the Implementation Coordination Unit, Prime Minister's Department to provide the necessary facilities to help Faridah and her family continue their lives," he said in a Facebook post on Sunday (July 20). He said the assistance to be channelled includes a business kiosk to be provided for Faridah to earn an income by selling local delicacies and banana fritters, as well as levelling the front portion of the family house. "Hopefully, this kindness and assistance will ease the suffering of Faridah as she has to take care of her bedridden husband and her children," he said. Anwar is in Negri Sembilan for the Madani Government Leadership Ukhuwah Programme in conjunction with the retreat for administration members and Members of Parliament. The programme involves the participation of the Madani government administration members as part of efforts to build a network of brotherhood between leaders and the people in a relaxed, inclusive setting filled with values of togetherness. – Bernama
