RBI said to have sold at least $5 billion to boost rupee

Time of India13 hours ago
India's central bank sold US dollars across both onshore and offshore currency markets this month to prop up the rupee as it weakened toward a record low, according to people familiar with the transactions.
The Reserve Bank of India sold at least $5 billion worth of the US currency, one of the people said, asking not to be identified as the information is private. The RBI didn't immediately respond to an email requesting comment on the matter. If the trend persists, it could become RBI's largest month of net dollar sales since January.

The rupee fell to 87.89 per dollar last week, just shy of its all-time low as US President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods on Aug. 6 to 50% as a penalty for its purchases of Russian oil. A weaker rupee could fuel imported inflation and strain an already fragile economic recovery.

The intervention suggests a potential shift away from the RBI's previously restrained approach under Governor Sanjay Malhotra, who took office in December.
The rupee has depreciated more than 2% so far this year, making it among Asia's worst-performing currencies. Roughly half of that drop came in the past two weeks after it became evident Trump was planning to increase the tariffs.

'The recent RBI intervention seems to have more to do with their dislike of the volatility in the exchange rate,' said Dhiraj Nim, currency strategist at Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. The rupee traded steady at 87.62 per dollar on Monday.
On multiple occasions last week, the central bank was seen stepping into the offshore market just before domestic currency trading began at 9 a.m. Mumbai time, according to two of the people familiar with the matter, who declined to be identified as they aren't authorized to speak on it.
Relying on so-called non-deliverable forwards allows the central bank to guide the rupee's trajectory without having to sell large volumes of dollars outright. The central bank heavily relied on this strategy last year.
The RBI's latest foreign-exchange reserves data also point to increased intervention, with the stockpile falling by $9.3 billion, the steepest drop since November, to $689 billion in the week through Aug. 1. Part of the decline may reflect valuation changes in global currencies, not solely the central bank's dollar sales or purchases.

TN plans special purpose vehicle for co-working space project

Chennai: As more co-working spaces are being planned across the city, as part of the 'chief minister's project, the state govt has decided to create a special purpose vehicle (SPV), and a private company with a CEO to manage the spaces. The SPV will work independently from the govt to manage the daily work of the co-working spaces. Officials, who participated in the meeting involving the CMDA, special projects and urban development department, said the chief minister wanted to ensure that all the 30 planned centres functioned continuously, irrespective of which govt or bureaucrats are heading departments. "As of now, the lone co-working centre at Kolathur is being jointly managed by the CMDA and GCC. This is not sustainable in the long run, as officials may change, and coordination and funding issues may arise. Hence, the new SPV will directly be funded by the govt and will have its own executive powers to maintain the centres on the lines of CMRL, CUMTA, or Smart City," the official said. News of the Discovery Undo "The interview and vetting of profiles will be done by the agencies while it will also popularise co-working spaces among professionals as an authentic job placement forum. The move is set to roll out in a few months once the SPV is formed," he said, adding that a portal will be formed with job data and camp details too. He added that several professionals come to the co-working spaces, and whoever is willing to provide their work data voluntarily can benefit from the recruitment system. "Every day, about 100 people come to the centre in Kolathur, and the numbers will increase once all 29 centres are opened. The placement system will be free too as the SPV will merely coordinate with companies and start-ups," said Prakash. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Cool comfort worth the extra 100, say passengers on board state's first AC local

Kolkata: Suburban commuters on board the maiden AC EMU Ranaghat-Sealdah train were ecstatic to experience the much-awaited service on the first day of the week. The feelings were mixed when it came to coughing up Rs 120 for the ride from Ranaghat to Sealdah. While some seemed sensitive about paying Rs 100 more for a journey that otherwise costs Rs 20 in non-AC rakes, others said the cool comfort and the superior travel justified the fare. A monthly ticket costs Rs 2,430. The one-way fare ranges from Rs 35 to Rs 120 depending on the distance travelled. The train was flagged off with much fanfare from Sealdah on Sunday. Commercial services started at 8.29 am on Monday. The inaugural commercial service was fairly crowded, with several passengers standing. But there was enough legroom, unlike the non-AC local trains. Ranaghat resident Dilip Ghosh, who works in Khadi Bhavan on CR Avenue, was smiling as he looked around the ICF-made rake, from the AC vent over the seat, noting the time as the automatic doors closed and the train chugged out of Ranaghat station. "This is like travelling on a metro train. We are covering 90 km in AC comfort and saving time as well. It would have taken around Rs 1,000 for the same ride on a hired car and taken me at least two-and-a-half hours. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo I shall reach Sealdah station at 10.10 am. A bus ride from there to my office will take another 10 mins," the 55-year-old said happily. "I shall try to catch the return train at 6.50 pm so I can be home by 8.45 pm (the Down train reaches Ranaghat at 8.32 pm)," he added. "I don't know...," said Balmiki Ray, a passenger who took the train from Khardah. "I would have paid Rs 5 for the same journey. Today I bought a ticket to Sealdah for Rs 60. The monthly passes will be a bit cheaper. But I wonder if it makes sense to increase my daily commuting expense 12 times for this comfort," the worker employed with a shop at Bagri Market said. Biplab Mondol, who boarded the train from Chakdah, echoed: "Today I paid Rs 105 because I was curious about the facility. The monthly ticket will cost me Rs 2,125. It's difficult to make a call when the daily commuting by non-AC train costs barely Rs 10," Mondol said. Arati Saha, a schoolteacher from Krishnanagar, insisted: "This is the ultimate comfort and safety. Two reserved coaches for ladies, that, too, air-conditioned! Only two rides may seem tokenistic, but this is certainly a significant start." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
